A crane operator allegedly attacked an MBA student with a knife after she refused to accept his love proposal today, police said. The man, identified as Prasad, attacked the girl with a knife in her neck, police said, adding that he also tried to knife three men who came to the rescue of the girl. The girl and the three others were discharged after they were administered first aid at the government hospital, a police official said. In her complaint, the girl said that Prasad was harassing her since last few days.

Koderma district Congress president Shankar Yadav and his personal bodyguard were killed when unidentified assailants hurled a bomb on his vehicle in Koderma district, police said today. The driver of Yadav's SUV was critically injured in the explosion that occurred near Dhab in Chandwara police station area on Koderma-Hazaribag border. Yadav (50) died on the spot while his bodyguard and the driver were seriously injured in the attack, Superintendent of Police Shivani Tiwari said. The bodyguard succumbed to his injuries in a hospital here while the driver was shifted to a hospital in Ranchi, she said. Yadav's SUV was attacked when he was returning from a stone crusher unit in Hazaribag district that he owned. The reason behind the attack is being investigated, Tiwari said. A court here today set aside the election of K Madhavi, Mayor of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC), as a corporator for submitting false affidavit about her marital status before the poll. District and Sessions Court judge M R Das pronounced the judgement saying that Madhavi violated provisions of the Odisha Municipal Corporation Act. According to the Act, a person having two spouses cannot contest the urban local body election, the petitioner's counsel Jagat Mohan Patnaik said. Madhvi, a BJD leader, was elected as a corporator in 2013 and later was elected as the Mayor of the BeMC. Former BeMC mayor and BJP leader Siba Shankar Das moved the court in 2014 and submitted that Madhavi married for a second time without divorcing her first husband. Family members of a 32-year-old man have lodged a complaint with the police claiming that he died after being allegedly thrashed by the staff of a hospital in south-west Delhi, a charge denied by the facility. Sonu had gone to the Rao Tula Ram (RTR) Hospital in Jafarapur on Sunday with his wife, where he had some quarrel with the hospital staff, a family member claimed. "He was then thrashed by staff of the hospital and died of injuries later," the family member alleged. Police said that it has received a complaint from the family, but not yet registered a case. "We will take a call after the post-mortem report is out," a police officer said. A 51-year-old subordinate BSF officer was today killed after he suffered a fatal bullet shot at his post along the India-Pakistan International Border (IB) in Rajasthan's Bikaner district, officials said. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Maan Singh was found dead with a single shot bullet wound, they said, adding it is yet to be ascertained if he intentionally shot himself to commit suicide or his rifle went off accidentally. However, no suicide note has been recovered from the spot, they added. The incident occurred at around 9 am when the official was deployed at a camp in the Anupgarh sector, they said. The ASI, who hails from Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr district, was on an observation duty at the camp of the BSF's 104th battalion, they said. Alleging that that the purported sting video linking him to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots was morphed, Congress leader Jagdish Tytler today threatened to file a criminal defamation case against those behind it. Tytler, who submitted a memorandum to the Home Ministry, said that he has registered a police complaint over putting of his images in the "doctored" video. "I find arrest is a proportionate response even though Mr Assange has restricted his own freedom for a number of years," Judge Arbuthnot said. The Madras High Court today stayed a Bar Council of India (BCI) order, whereby it had deferred its approval to a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu bar council, laying down several conditions, including a 10-year continuous practice, for contesting the March 28 polls to the body. Passing the interim order on a petition filed by lawyer V Vasanthakumar, a division bench of justices C T Selvam and N Sathish Kumar issued notice to the standing counsel for the BCI and posted the matter to March 1. A minor argument between a man and his wife took an ugly turn as the women allegedly poured kerosene on her husband and set him afire, police said. According to a police official, the man had objected to his wife talking on the mobile phone, which triggered a verbal altercation. The police are now on the lookout for the accused woman, while a probe has also been ordered against some of the men in khaki also, over alleged inaction on the complaint, the official said. The incident took place on February 7, when Nanke (35) had an argument with his wife Pooja, he said. "Pooja was angry, as she was not allowed to speak. Favouring the use of modern technology for investigating crimes, the Supreme Court today asked the Centre to look into a suggestion of policemen using GPS enabled digital cameras having a time stamp system for taking photographs of crime scenes. The apex court also asked the Centre to consider whether states could create portals for uploading of crime scene images, from which time stamp and reference numbers can be noted. A bench of Justices Adarsh Goel and U U Lalit, which heard the submissions of senior advocate Arun Mohan, who has been appointed as amicus curiae in the matter, said the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) can issue a manual. Mohan suggested in his submission that these digital cameras were available in market for a cost of Rs 8000 each but the final specifications could be laid down by the BPR&D. A 25-year-old man was shot dead allegedly by a guest at a marriage ceremony in the Bargadwa area here, police said today. Arvind Kumar Singh alias Mantu Singh, while having a dinner with his friend and groom Abhishek Singh at the marriage hall yesterday, had an altercation with some guests, following which one among them fired at him. He was rushed to the BRD medical college where doctors declared him as brought dead. Singh was a contractor by profession.
