A minor argument between a man and his wife took an ugly turn as the women allegedly poured kerosene on her husband and set him afire, police said. According to a police official, the man had objected to his wife talking on the mobile phone, which triggered a verbal altercation. The incident took place on February 7, when Nanke (35) had an argument with his wife Pooja, he said. "Pooja was angry, as she was not allowed to speak. When Nanke went to sleep after having meal, Pooja sprinkled kerosene on him and burnt him alive," the police officer said. Hearing Nanke's cries, his family members rushed him to a hospital, from where he was referred to Lucknow. Nanke succumbed to his injuries yesterday, the officer said. The woman, meanwhile, fled the spot, police said. A local Congress leader was today killed instantly in a low-intensity blast at his home in Nalagonda district, police said. Police said that Dharma Naik, the upa-sarpanch of Chinthalapalem village and a local Congress leader, died in a blast triggered with explosives used to drive out crop-destroying boars from the fields. "It was a low-intensity blast and the explosive was placed under a cot on which Naik was sleeping. The blast occurred at around 2.30 am and killed Naik instantly," the official supervising the investigations told PTI. Acting on concerns over the health of the people of Delhi, the National Green Tribunal today directed the Central Pollution Control Board to analyse samples of Yamuna water at four points on DJB's plea alleging high ammonia in water being provided by the Haryana government to Delhi. A bench comprising Justices Jawad Rahim and S P Wangdi ordered the apex pollution monitoring body to take the samples and detect the levels of ammonia and other pollutants at Pajewala in Haryana, Wazirabad water treatment plant, Okhla and ITO barrage in Delhi. "We are of the opinion that let CPCB collect samples of water at these points as mentioned in the map given by the Delhi Jal Board. The report shall contain analysis with respect to ammonia and other pollutants and be submitted on February 16, the next date of hearing," the bench said. "Binu surrendered before police today," Assistant Commissioner of Police, SRMC, K Kannan told PTI. Binu was one of the persons who managed to flee the spot when police made a midnight swoop last week among the partying rowdies after being tipped off by another history-sheeter who was on his way to the birthday bash. Describing touts as a "menace", Union Culture minister Mahesh Sharma today said harassing or touching tourists could soon be a criminal offence, even punishable under the provisions of organised crime. He said his ministry was in talks with the Home ministry regarding this and has also spoken to the Uttar Pradesh chief minister to find ways to deal with touts harassing tourists, especially those visiting the Taj Mahal. A fifth person was today arrested in connection with the alleged vandalism at the official residence of the chief minister's private secretary V Karthikeyan Pandian here on Saturday, police said. The accused, identified as Balaram Khuntia alias Balia, was arrested by the Commissionerate of Police from Sarakantara area here. According to the police, Balia was among the group of people who had barged into Pandian's official residence, damaged vehicles and flower pots and hurled cow dung at the main gate. Four persons were arrested from the spot on Saturday and raids were on to arrest others involved in the incident, the police said. A 36-year-old man was arrested on charges of sexually exploiting an Irish woman for years after promising to marry her and duping her of nearly Rs 4 lakh, police said today. Vivek Awasthi was arrested from Tapovan area of the town late last night on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman from Ireland, Muni-ki-Reti Police Station SHO Shanti Prasad Dimri said without disclosing the name of the victim. The 48-year-old woman accused Awasthi of sexually exploiting her from 2012- 2016 after promising to marry her, he said. She also accused him of refusing to return her Rs 3.70 lakh, which he had borrowed from her when they were in a relationship, the sub-inspector said. The man was booked under sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC.
A block coordinator has been arrested on charges of bribery by Odisha's anti-corruption vigilance wing in Cuttack district. Santosh Kumar Kar had demanded Rs 5,000 for processing the papers of 14 beneficiaries of the Centre's "Swachha Bharat Abhiyan" scheme, a vigilance release said. One of the beneficiaries, Minaketan Tripathy, had lodged a complaint with the vigilance department, following which a trap was laid for Kar at a coaching centre in Cuttack, it said. The officials arrested him as soon as he accepted the bribe, the release said, adding that the money has been seized from him. The officers have also carried out a search at Kar's residence at Khapuria labour colony in Nuapatna locality of Cuttack, it added.
The Bombay High Court today asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to file a reply on a 31-year-old woman's plea seeking that she must not be compelled by the civic authorities to record the name of her daughter's biological father on the birth certificate. The petitioner, a single, unwed mother from Nalasopara, gave birth to the girl following a test tube method in August 2016. She then requested the BMC's birth registration department to permit her to leave the space for the father's name on the child's birth certificate blank. When the BMC refused permission, she approached the high court. While the high court issued a notice to the BMC in December last year, the corporation is yet to respond to it. The petitioner also cited the 2015 landmark judgement of the apex court that stated that single mothers must not be compelled to disclose the name of their child's biological father in the birth certificates. A 38-year-old cab driver was allegedly beaten to death by three unidentified motorcyclists at Govandi in the eastern suburbs here, police said. Officials informed that Salim Gulam Shaikh, a cab driver, had a quarrel with three unidentified persons on Ahilyabai Holkar road in Govandi after Shaikh's car allegedly brushed their motorcycle while overtaking it. Police said that the incident occurred yesterday evening. In the ensuing altercation, Shaikh was beaten up, sustaining serious head injuries, and died during treatment at a local hospital, said Senior Police Inspector Dipak Pagare of Shivajinagar Police Station. Pagare said that the three had fled the scene and a search was on for them by scouring CCTV images of the area. A case of murder had been registered, he added.
A 28-year-old army man was killed in celebratory firing at a wedding function in Shyam Nagar area here, police said today. The man, identified as Kuldeep Dixit, died after being hit by a bullet allegedly fired from his licensed rifle to celebrate his friend, Shiv Prakash's marriage, Superintendent of Police (east), Anurag Arya said. While the guests were busy dancing, the victim's another friend, Sanjay Maurya, fired several shots in the air to celebrate and a bullet accidentally hit Dixit in the stomach, the SP said. He was rushed to Kanshiram trauma centre, where he was declared brought dead, Arya said. After hearing about the incident, top police officers including SSP, Akhilesh Kumar, rushed to the site and arrested Maurya, he added. The victim hailed from Rae Bareli and was posted in Ambala.
