The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and expressed dissatisfaction with the incumbent investigation being carried out in the Manipur fake encounter cases.The apex court also directed the National Human Right Centre (NHRC) to depute three persons to work with the probe agency to complete the task.Earlier in January, the top court rebuked the CBI and the Special Investigative Team (SIT) for not perusing the cases seriously.The apex court also expressed displeasure over the low number of FIRs registered in this regard.A bench headed by Justices Madan B. Lokur and Uday Lalit had earlier ordered a CBI probe by the SIT into the fake encounter killings in Manipur in the last decade.The bench passed this order on a writ petition filed by the Extra-Judicial Execution Victim Families Association (EEVFAM) alleging that 1528 fake encounter deaths have been recorded in Manipur in the last decade.

A special court today summoned former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh, his wife and three others as accused in a Rs 7 crore money laundering case. Special Judge Santosh Snehi Mann said there was "prima facie" enough evidence against the accused persons and directed them to appear before the court on March 22. The Enforcement Directorate had chargesheeted 83-year-old Singh, accusing him of projecting around Rs 7 crore "proceeds of crime" as agricultural income in connivance with his wife and others and invested them in purchasing LIC policies. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today rubbished the RJD's allegation that Lalu Prasad was "framed" in the fodder scam cases by the NDA regimes at the Centre and in the state. RJD chief Prasad has been lodged in Ranchi's Birsa Munda jail since December 23 last, following his conviction in a fodder scam case. Subsequently, he was convicted in another case related to the scam. "What role did (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi or I have to play in the matter? It is an over-20-year-old case lodged by the CBI, which has been probing the matter following a Patna High Court order," Kumar told reporters here on the sidelines of his "Lok Samvad" (public interaction) programme. A local court here today has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for beating his wife to death five years ago. Additional District Sessions Judge Amber Rawat also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on accused Devraj after pronouncing him guilt under section 302 of the IPC. An Iraqi court today sentenced a Turkish woman and a Syrian man to life in jail over ties to the Islamic State group, a judicial spokesman said. The woman was accused of "hiding the actions of a terrorist group to which her husband belonged", Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Abdel Sattar Bayraqdar said, referring to IS. Maldives officials are accusing two arrested Supreme Court justices and a former president of plotting to overthrow the government. They say police have found more than USD 200,000 in suspicious money in searches since a state of emergency was declared last week in the tourist haven. A presidential statement yesterday said ex-President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom had bribed officials and judges and encouraged riots. It said he and the justices were "attempting to overthrow the government." An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan today indicted the prime accused in the brutal rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl in Punjab province, an incident that sparked a nation-wide outrage. The girl went missing while going for tuition near her aunt's house in Kasur city, some 50 kilometres from Lahore, on January 5. Her body was found in a garbage heap, five days after her kidnapping. During the hearing, judge Sajjad Ahmad indicted prime suspect Imran Ali Naqshbandi in the murder case, Geo News reported. Imran was arrested on January 23. His trial is being held on a daily basis inside the jail premises. The Lahore High Court has directed the anti-terrorism court to wrap up the trial within seven days of the suspect's indictment. Ten policemen were injured in an attack by the relatives of a man whom they had gone to nab after he escaped from custody, an official said today. Sitaram Gurjar (23), who was in police custody in connection with a theft case, escaped with his handcuffs on from the Tonk Khurd police station in the district yesterday. However, when a police team went to his native village Chandgarh to nab him on the basis of a tip-off, his relatives opened fire and pelted the security personnel with stones, injuring 10 of them, Tonk Khurd police station in-charge J G Choukse said. One of the policemen, who sustained serious injuries in the incident, was rushed to a hospital in Indore for treatment, he said. A case under relevant sections for attempt to murder and preventing policemen from discharging their duty was registered against 20 people, though no one was arrested so far, the official said. The police have also launched a search for Gurjar, he added.

The body of Madhusudhan Deb was found hanging from a tree near an old age home at Barjala area, 8 km from Agartala, last evening. Four Chinese men have been arrested by the customs for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country 10 kilograms gold at the Delhi airport, according to an official statement issued today. The accused were intercepted by the customs officials after their arrival here from Taiwan via Hong Kong on Saturday. A detailed personal and baggage search resulted in the seizure of 10 gold bars, collectively weighing 10 kg, wrapped in newspapers and concealed by the passengers in pockets of trousers worn by them, it said. The gold bars, valued at little over Rs 3 crore, was seized and the Chinese men were arrested, the statement said.
