Rajnath proposes cybercrime portal for women

In a bid to tackle cybercrime, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday proposed an online portal to report cybercrimes against women."Need to increase cyber forensic capabilities. We have decided to establish cybercrime reporting portal to report cyber crimes against women," Singh said at the All India Forensic Science Conference here.He also said that a laboratory will be established to abolish crime against children and women.

Police constable booked for rape, forgery

A police constable has been booked for rape and forgery after he married a woman keeping her in the dark about his first marriage. The FIR was registered against constable Dev Kumar at Kotwali police station here yesterday on the direction of court, a police officer said. His second wife moved court after the police refused to registered a case against Kumar, a resident of Khurrampur village in Aligarh district. Police were investigating the case.

Man dies after being thrashed by friend over demand of Rs 10

A 30-year-old man died after allegedly being beaten up by his friend for demanding Rs 10 from him to share the cost of their lunch, police said today. The victim, Dinesh Laxman Joshi, and his friend Jeevan More (35) consumed liquor at Sai Bangurda village in suburban Powai on Wednesday afternoon. Thereafter, Joshi went and bought some food for both of them from a hotel nearby, Powai's senior police inspector Anil Pophale said. However, when Joshi asked for Rs 10 from his friend to share the cost of the food, More allegedly got angry and beat him up severely with a wooden stick, he said. Joshi, who suffered multiple injuries in the incident, was yesterday admitted to a hospital where he died, he said. Subsequently, the police arrested More and an offence under IPC section 302 (murder) was registered against him, he added.

Shortage of judges in higher judiciary saddening: Khurshid

Former Union law minister Salman Khurshid has said the shortage of judges in the higher judiciary was "saddening" and called for steps to address the issue at the earliest. Khurshid, himself a senior advocate, said that right to justice should get the attention similar to that of 'Swachh Bharat' programme and there were some "fundamental flaws" in the judicial system. "We don't have an appellate judiciary which is stable at the top. Number of Chief Justices serve a very short tenure," he said at the conclave -- 'The Rule of Law Convention 2018 on Judicial Reforms' -- organised by the Bar Association of India here. Khurshid also talked about the issue of vacancies in the higher judiciary. "The vacancies in the higher courts are very saddening. Young people should come and join the judiciary," he said. Man killed as robbers open fire after failed burglary bid

A gang of robbers opened fire after a failed bid to burgle a house in Rajasthan's Bundi district, killing a 25-year-old man, police said today. According to Talera police station SHO Prushottam Mahriya, about 5-6 members of the gang tried to break into the house in Shivaji Colony in Talera town last night. But the family members woke up and chased the robbers. A gang member opened fire at the family members while fleeing. Mohammed Rahim suffered bullet injury in head and was rushed to Maharao Bhim Singh Hospital in Kota, from where he was taken to a private hospital in the city, another police officer said, adding that he died this morning. A case under Section 302 (murder) of IPC has been lodged against unidentified persons. Efforts were underway to nab the gang members, the SHO said. CBI books US-based firm executives, NHAI officials in bribery

The CBI has booked some executives of the Indian subsidiary of US-based firm CDM Smith and unidentified officials of the NHAI in a case of alleged bribery of over USD 1.18 million to secure contracts, officials said. The CBI is carrying out searches at five locations in Bengaluru and Chennai at the offices of the CDM Smith and also at the residence of the then Director Finance of its Indian subsidiary, Gopakumar, since this morning, the officials said. The agency has named in its FIR the US-based company, its Indian subsidiary CDM Smith India Private Limited based in Bengaluru, Gopakumar, the then Manager of RV Infra Solutions, S Krishnamurthy, and other unidentified executives of the US- based company, its Indian arm and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), they said. It is alleged that the company paid bribes to the tune of USD 1.18 million through its Indian arm to various officials of NHAI to secure contracts between 2011 and 2016, the officials said. It

Woman duped of Rs 83 lakh, two booked

Two persons have been booked for allegedly duping a woman from Bhayandar township in the district to the tune of Rs 82.50 lakh, police said today. The accused have been identified as Betty Jones and Kusum Chowdhari, a woman, police said. As per the complaint lodged by the victim, she had returned to India after staying in Sharjah for 11 years. Jones, one of the accused, had befriended her on a social media platform prior to her return. Man gets 5 years jaiI for sexually assaulting boy

A local court has sentenced a 35- year-old man from Juhugaon in Navi Mumbai to five years of rigorous imprisonment for allegedly sexually assaulting a five-year-old boy in 2015. In the order passed on Wednesday, District Judge and Additional Sessions Judge, P P Jadhav, also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict Nitin Satpal. Public prosecutor Vinit Kulkarni told the court that the victim and Satpal were neighbours in Juhugaon in Vashi. The prosecution told the court that the victim's mother, a police constable, used to drop him at the home of the accused whenever she had to work night shifts. 4 arrested after miscreants vandalise IAS officer's compound

A group of miscreants here, holding BJP flags, today barged into the residential premises of a senior official in Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's office and indulged in vandalism, police said. Kathua girl murder case: 1 SPO held

A special police officer (SPO) has been arrested by the Crime branch of the Jammu and Kashmir Police for his alleged involvement in kidnapping and killing of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua district last month, police said today. The girl's body was recovered from the Rassana forest on January 17, a week after she went missing while grazing horses. The issue had repeatedly rocked the state Assembly with opposition parties raising questions and demanding action against the culprits.
