Four arrested for facilitating Jhatt's escape

Jammu and Kashmir Police has arrested four people for their alleged involvement in Pakistan-born Lashker-e-Taiba terrorist Mohammed Naveed Jhatt's escape from the busy SMHS hospital here, police said. Shakeel Bhat, Tika Khan, Rahil Kachroo and Mohammad Shafi are the four people arrested in connection with Jhatt's escape, police said. They said Bhat was the mastermind of the escape of 22-year-old Jhatt alias Abu Hanzalla on February 6. Bhat's motorcycle had been used in the escape of the terrorist, police said. Khan, a resident of Pulwama, is alleged to have provided his car for further transportation of Jhatt out of the city, police said. Jhatt is at present believed to be in the Pulwama area of South Kashmir, they said. Kachroo was another accomplice who had provided help in Jhatt's escape after firing bullets at policemen. Three held for making synthetic milk

Three people were arrested for allegedly making synthetic milk here, an official today. Chemicals and other materials used for manufacturing synthetic milk were recovered when a shop at Bahjoi Road was raided, said Rashid Khan, the sub-divisional magistrate of Sambhal. Iqbal, the owner of the shop and his two other accomplices were arrested, the SDM said. The district administration recovered urea, refined oil and other chemicals from the shop, Khan said.

Ex-Bangla PM Zia given 5 yrs rigorous imprisonment for graft

Bangladesh's ex-premier Khaleda Zia was today sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment for corruption, a huge setback for the 72-year-old main opposition leader who may be barred from contesting the next general election in December. The three-time prime minister was sentenced by Dhaka's Special Court in connection with the embezzlement of 21 million taka (USD 250,000) in foreign donations meant for the Zia Orphanage Trust, named after her late husband Ziaur Rahman. The verdict simultaneously sentenced Zia's "fugitive" elder son and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP's) senior vice president Tarique Rahman as he was tried in absentia in the Zia Orphanage Trust case. Murder convict who jumped parole held after 17 years

A life term convict in a murder case, who has been on run since the last 17 years when he jumped parole, has been arrested from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, a police officer said here today. Vedprakash Virendrakumar Singh was among the three persons held guilty by the Thane district court for murdering one Ramnarayan Garbani Singh in Carvalho Nagar area in December 1994 over a property dispute, said Thane DCP (Crime) Abishek Trimukhe. The trio--Prayag Singh Bharti Singh, Vedprakash Virendrakumar Singh and Ashok Kumar Upendra Singh--were handed a life term by the court in 1997. However, Vedprakash jumped the parole in 2001 when he was lodged in Yerawada Jail near Pune, he said. A senior inspector of Thane crime branch recently got a tip-off that Vedprakash was hiding in his native village in Uttar Pradesh, the DCP said. He was arrested last evening by teams of Thane crime branch and UT STF from his village, the officer said. Vedprakash is being brought to Thane.

AAP wants conflict of interest bill

The opposition AAP today sought permission from the Punjab Assembly speaker to table a private member bill in the upcoming budget session, which is aimed to unseat ministers or MLAs if they are found guilty of conflict of interest. The Punjab Unseating of Members of Legislative Assembly found Guilty of Conflict of Interest Bill, 2018, was submitted to Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rana K P Singh here, AAP Punjab, co-president Aman Arora, said. "Under the proposed bill, any elected representative, be it the chief minister, ministers and the MLA's, shall be liable for disqualification and hence unseated, within a period of six months, if they are found guilty of the Conflict of Interest Act, which means any MLA found furthering his own private interests, financial or commercial, directly or indirectly, at the cost of interest of the state, shall be unseated," he said. Kunduli rape-suicide case: Odisha govt urges HC to appoint

The state government has urged the Orissa High Court to engage a sitting judge to monitor the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the alleged gang-rape and suicide case of a minor girl in Kunduli area of Koraput district, a govt official said today. The government made the request to the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court yesterday, immediately after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik ordered a court-monitored SIT probe into the case, an official of the law department said. The 14-year-old girl from Musaguda village in Koraput district was allegedly raped by four "men in uniform" while she was returning home from Kunduli market on October 10 last year. The girl committed suicide on January 22. Sources in the home department said that the government is in search of an efficient IPS officer, with adequate experience in the CBI, to head the SIT probe. Owners of '1 Above' pub arrested in PF case

The three owners of the '1 Above' pub, which was gutted in the Kamala Mills Compound fire here last year, were today arrested in a case related to non- payment of Provident Fund (PF) to their employees, police said. Kripesh Sanghvi, his brother Jigar and their partner Abhijeet Mankar were arrested by the N M Joshi Marg police, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone III, Virendra Mishra, said. They had allegedly not paid PF dues of Rs 8.65 lakh to their employees and accordingly, a case was registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Provident Fund Act, he told PTI. The case was registered after the Kamala Mills fire tragedy and the arrests were made today, the DCP said, adding that they would be produced before a local court. HC awards life term to four for kidnapping child

The Delhi High Court has awarded life imprisonment to four men for kidnapping a seven-year-old boy for a ransom of Rs 25 lakh in 2010. The high court said it has been proved by the prosecution that the four men were involved in the child's kidnapping and their identity has also been established in the court. A bench of Justices Vipin Sanghi and P S Teji upheld a trial court's judgement convicting and sentencing to life term the four men for the offence of conspiracy and kidnapping the minor for ransom. Suspended Bharathiar University VC's bail plea rejected

A special court today dismissed a bail petition of suspended Bharathiar University Vice- Chancellor A Ganapathy, who was arrested days ago on bribery charges. When the petition came up before the court of Prevention of Corruption Act, special Judge John Mino rejected the bail petitions of Ganapthay and another accused, professor Dharmaraj. Ganapathy was arrested on February 3 for allegedly accepting Rs 30 lakh as bribe from an aspirant for the post of an assistant professor. He is lodged in the central jail along with Chemistry professor Dharmaraj who allegedly brokered the deal. Opposing the bail plea, the prosecution argued that there was apprehension that the petitioners would tamper with the evidence if enlarged on bail. 16-year-old commits suicide in Hyderabad

A 16-year-old class 10th student allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at her residence at Saidabad in Telangana.Sattaiah the Circle Inspector in Saidabad police station informed ANI that "Yesterday evening the deceased came back home from her school and became unconscious after consuming unidentified form of poison".He further said, "The family took her to a nearby hospital, where she died while undergoing the treatment."Her body was later sent to Osmania General Hospital for the post-mortem examination.The father of the deceased told ANI. "My daughter studies in Kurma Guda Government school, she went to school we don't know what happened she went inside her room and drank poison, what (ever) happened in the school I don't know. (I do not know) who is responsible for this."No suicide note has been recovered from the site. The case has been registered under the section 174d of Code of Criminal Procedure and further investigation is on.

Shopian firing: SC to hear plea to quash FIR against Major Aditya

The Supreme Court will tomorrow hear the plea filed by Major Aditya Kumar's father, seeking quashing of the FIR registered against his son in connectrion with killing of three civilans in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district.On January 27, three civilians were killed after Army personnel fired at a stone-pelting mob of protesters in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir.Over 200 protestors pelted stones at the Army convoy following which the army personnel shot in the air in their self defence.Following the incident, the state police filed an FIR under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the Major and his Army unit of 10 Garhwal Rifles.Subsequently, the Army filed a counter FIR in response to the one lodged by the state police.

Criminal killed in encounter in Uttar Pradesh

A criminal was today killed, while another managed to flee, during a police encounter here, police said. Acting on a tip-off, Superintendent of Police Anand Kulkarni said that two persons were stopped at Hariharpur turn. As they were stopped, they started firing on police, he said. In the retaliatroy firing, the police team fired and one of the criminal, identified as Manoj Singh, was hit by a bullet, while another managed to flee, the SP said. The injured was taken to a hospital, but was declared brought dead there, he said. Sub-inspector Anil Tiwari also got injured and is undergoing treatment at a district hospital, Kulkarni said. The deceased criminal was accused of killing a village head and was wanted by the police, the SP said, adding that a search was on for the other absconding accused and he would be nabbed soon, the SP said.
