Shopian firing: Major's Father moves SC for FIR quashing

The father of Army Major Aditya Kumar, booked by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the firing incident in Shopian, has moved the Supreme Court seeking quashing of the FIR against his son. Lieutenant Colonel Karamveer Singh said his son, a Major in the 10 Garhwal Rifles, has been "wrongly and arbitrarily" named in the FIR as the incident relates to an Army convoy on bonafide military duty in an area under the AFSPA, which was isolated by an "unruly and deranged" mob pelting stones causing damage to military vehicles. The plea, filed through advocate Aishwarya Bhati, said the intention of his son was to save Army personnel and property and the fire was inflicted "only to impair and provide a safe escape from a savage and violent mob engaged in terrorist activity". Bridegroom, friends beat man to death for stealing shoes

A bridegroom and his four friends allegedly beat a man to death soon after a pre-wedding ceremony on the suspicion that the man had stolen his shoes. The incident took place yesterday in Surajpur village where the pre-wedding ceremony of Surendra was taking place, police said today. After the ceremony was over, Surendra's shoes could not be found. Surendra and his friends suspected Ramsaran (42) of stealing the shoes and allegedly beat him up. Police station in-charge Upendra Kumar Deshawar said Ramsaran sustained serious injuries and died while undergoing treatment at the district hospital. Police said that based on a complaint filed by the wife of the deceased, a case of murder has been registered against Surendra and four others. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem.

Woman charged after attacking husband, Delta flight crew

Federal authorities say a woman had to be restrained on a Germany-to-Detroit flight after she attacked her husband and a Delta Air Lines crew. Camille Krueger was charged Wednesday with interference and assault. In a court filing, US customs officer James Brown says Krueger caused a stir on Flight 87 on January 14 when she began attacking her husband, and she also kicked and spit at crew members who tried to intervene. Authorities say Krueger had been drinking wine during the flight. A military police officer subdued Krueger with flexible wrist cuffs, and she was secured in her seat for the final 90 minutes. After the plane landed, authorities say a mask and leg restraints were placed on Krueger to stop her from spitting and kicking. Krueger hasn't appeared yet in Detroit federal court and no lawyer is listed in the court file.

Women staff having child by surrogacy to get maternity leave

Women employees of the central government who have a child through surrogacy will be entitled to maternity leave, according to an official order of the personnel ministry. They can get paid maternity leave of 26 weeks (about 180 days). The ministry has written to all central government departments about a Delhi High Court order of 2015 on the issue. "All ministries/departments are advised to give wide publicity of its contents to the concerned officers," the personnel ministry said in its latest directive to all the ministries and enclosed a copy of the court's order with it. The court verdict had come on a plea by a Kendriya Vidyalaya teacher who had twins through a surrogate mother but was denied maternity leave as she was not the biological mother. "A female employee, who is the commissioning mother, would be entitled to apply for maternity leave," the court had held. Aasia Bibi family appeals for early hearing of her case

The family of a Christian woman convicted of blasphemy in Pakistan has appealed to the Supreme Court to hold an early hearing as she been on the death row since 2010. Aasia Bibi, 51, has been on the death row since November 2010 after being convicted of committing blasphemy. In 2014, the Lahore High Court upheld her death sentence. She challenged it in the Supreme Court which stayed the execution in July 2015. Since then no progress has been made in the case and Aasia is languishing in jail. Her case gained prominence after the then Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer pleaded for her retrial and was subsequently murdered by his police guard, Mumtaz Qadri, in January 2011. Aasia's family, including her husband and two daughters, along with her lawyer Saiful Malook yesterday visited the Supreme Court. South Korean soccer player pleads not guilty to sex assault

A South Korean soccer player accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a hotel on Guam has pleaded not guilty. The Pacific Daily News reports that Sangju Sangmu FC player Byong Oh Kim entered his plea on Wednesday. Court documents say a 22-year-old woman told police last month that she woke up in a hotel room to Kim rubbing her stomach and breast. She told police that Kim also took off her underwear and raped her. The woman says she ran out of the hotel room away from Kim and found a security guard who called police. Kim's attorney, F. Randall Cunliffe, says there's video evidence from the hotel disputing the allegations made against his client. Kim has been ordered to stay on Guam. His next hearing is February 13.

Biker dies in Delhi road mishap, cops suspended

A 21-year-old motorcyclist lost his life after his neck got stuck in a wire tied between two police barricades placed on the road near Netaji Subhash Place last night.A case has been registered with the Delhi Police under section 304A of Indian Penal Code (causing death by negligence). Aircel Maxis scam: Confidential report found in Chidambaram's house

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) found a confidential Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) report at the Jor Bagh residence of former finance minister P. Chidambaram during a raid on January 13.According to the ED sources, the CBI had submitted the top-secret document on Aircel Maxis scam in a sealed cover to the Supreme Court.Both the ED and the CBI are investigating the role of P. Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram in the Aircel Maxis scam.According to ED sources, the report that they found was an unsigned copy, which means it was leaked from the CBI premises.The ED had brought this to the knowledge of the CBI and had also written a letter to them.The content of the report has been verified by the CBI.The CBI has instituted an enquiry as to how the report had reached the residence of Chidambaram.Moreover, the role of P. NGT orders inspection of brick kilns in Delhi-NCR

A plea alleging that illegal operation of brick kilns has resulted in severe air and water pollution in Delhi-NCR has prompted the National Green Tribunal to order their inspection and seek report on their compliance. A bench headed by Justice S P Wangdi issued notices to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan governments and sought their replies in three weeks. "In the meanwhile, we direct the state pollution control board of each of the States of UP, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan to examine the allegations contained in original application and inspect all brick fields within the districts referred and examine as to whether these are compliant or not. Remove word 'vishwavidyalaya' from name: HC to Rohini ashram

The Delhi High Court today directed a Rohini-based institution, where girls and women were allegedly kept in confinement, to immediately remove the word 'vishwavidyalaya' from its name. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar observed that the use of the word 'vishwavidyalaya' by the ashram was completely contrary to the law and does not fall in the ambit of UGC norms. It said the ashram was not a 'vishwavidyalaya' or university as defined under the University Grants Commission Act and it cannot, therefore, continue to represent itself as one. The high court also directed the CBI to take all steps available under the law to secure presence of Rohini ashram founder Virender Dev Dixit who has not joined the probe since January. Man held with firearms, ammunition at Agartala rail station

The Government Railway Police today arrested one person and seized three pistols and 500 cartridges from his possession at Agartala railway station. Acting on a tip-off, the GRP personnel arrested the man and recovered three .22 calibre pistols, ammunition and a knife from him, GRP Agartala Officer-in-charge Kishor Das said. The arrested man is a resident of Gomati district of Tripura. Two more arrested in Thane CDR scam

Two more people, one of them an expert in solving cyber crimes, have been arrested in connection with the call data records (CDR) racket busted here a few days ago, a police official said. Jasprit Singh Marwah (27) and Ajinkya Nagargoje (30) were arrested from Pune on Tuesday night, DCP (Crime) Abishek Trimukhe told reporters last evening. With this, the number of people who have landed behind bars in connection with the racket has gone up to nine. These include Rajani Pandit, said to be the first woman detective of the country. Marwah had fraudulently used the official email address of the Yavatmal Superintendent of Police and obtained as many as 11 CDRs, police said. A former volunteer gymnastics coach in the US state of Missouri has been charged with three counts of child molestation, amid continuing fallout from an abuse scandal roiling the sport. Mentally challenged girl raped in Odisha

A mentally challenged girl was allegedly raped in Pathuri Panchayat of Odisha's Mayurbhanj district.The incident took place on Tuesday night after which the victim's father filed a complaint against three people from the village out of whom one was identified as Surendra Nayak.According to primary information, victim's father along with the three accused, were drinking at his house.Few hours later, two accused left for their home but Surendra pretending to be drunk stayed there.Reportedly, the victim was kidnapped from her house to a nearby paddy field while she was asleep.She was left in the field in an unconscious condition where she was noticed by a villager who was passing by.The person informed the police immediately and rescued the victim.The police officials said Surendra's clothes were found at the crime spot.On the basis of the complaint by the victim's father, Surendra Nayak was arrested for further investigation.

Mother, daughter charred to death in Amritsar

A woman along with her daughter was found charred to death in Amritsar's Darshan Avenue.The bodies of a mother-daughter duo were recovered from their house in Darshan Nagar locality of Amritsar on Tuesday.According to reports, only those two were present in the house at the time of the incident and the neighbours were the first one to notice the smoke coming out of the house, following which they informed the police and fire brigade.The police officials said they have initiated an investigation into the matter.The cause of the incident could not be ascertained.The bodies were later sent for post-mortem.

DRI seizes gold worth Rs 77 lakh

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a passenger with gold weighing 2.49 kg worth Rs 77 lakh at Rajahmundry Railway station.The accused was travelling from Guwahati to Chennai in Dibrugarh-Tambaram Express.After investigation, it was noticed that he was carrying few tool boxes which contained impact drivers which appeared heavier than normal.After removing the screws, the officers could find yellow colored metal inside the screw driver.Gold in molten form was poured into the hollow space of the drivers and screwed it, so as to completely conceal the gold.The officers, with the help of certain equipment, could pull out five cylindrical shaped gold round bars.After interrogation, the passenger admitted that the five cylindrical shaped gold bars concealed in the impact drivers are of foreign-origin which was smuggled inside the country from Myanmar and he was transporting the same to Chennai.The smuggled gold has been seized under the Customs Act, 1962.Investigation is .

US announces takedown of global cyber theft ring

The US Justice Department announced indictments today for 36 people accused of running a transnational ring stealing and selling credit card and personal identity data, causing USD 530 million in losses. Thirteen members of the "Infraud Organization" were arrested in the United States, Australia, Britain, France, Italy, Kosovo and Serbia, it said. Created in Ukraine in 2010 by Svyatoslav Bondarenko, Infraud was a key hub for card fraud, touting itself with the motto "In Fraud We Trust." It was "the premier one-stop shop for cybercriminals worldwide," said Deputy Assistant Attorney General David Rybicki. Members could buy and sell card and personal data for use to buy goods on the internet, defrauding the card owners, card issuers and vendors. Infraud operated automated vending sites to make it easy for someone to buy card and identity data from them. It had 10,901 approved "members" registered to buy and sell with them in early 2017, and maintained a rating and feedback .
