Victims' dad apologises after lunging at Nassar in courtroom

A distraught father seething over sexual abuse suffered by three daughters tried to attack former sports doctor Larry Nassar in a Michigan courtroom after a judge rejected his request to confront the "demon" in a locked room, a stunning rush that reflected the anguish felt by parents who trusted him with their children. Spain extradites suspect thought to be spam kingpin to US

Spain has extradited to the United States a Russian citizen who is suspected of being one of the world's most notorious spammers. Pyotr Levashov, a 37-year-old from St Petersburg, was arrested in April while vacationing with his family in Barcelona. US authorities had asked for him to be detained on charges of fraud and unauthorized interception of electronic communications. He was scheduled to be arraigned late Friday in a federal courthouse in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where a grand jury indicted him last year. A statement from Spain's National Police said officers handed Levashov over to US marshals yesterday. The extradition was approved in October by Spain's National Court, which rejected a counter-extradition request from Russia. The Russian Embassy in Washington didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Man killed over Re 1 in Thane!

A 54-year old man from Kalyan town here was killed after a quarrel over Re 1, police said today. The incident took place late last night when the victim, Manohar Gamne (54), went to buy eggs at a neighbourhood shop in Rambaugh, said Thane police PRO Sukhada Narkar. Gamne allegedly paid Re 1 less to the shopkeeper which led to an argument between the two. The shopkeeper abused the victim, Narkar said. The victim and his son later went to the shopkeeper to ask him why he hurled abuses. This led to another round of verbal exchanges during which the shopkeeper's son repeatedly kicked and punched Gamne, leading to his instant death, the official said. The accused, Sudhkar Prabhu (45), has been arrested and charged with murder, Narkar said.

Another arrest in Kasganj violence

Another accused named Rahat Qureshi was arrested on Saturday in connection with the communal violence in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj district.Earlier on January 31, the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested Salim, the prime accused in the killing of Chandan Gupta during the communal flare-up in the district on Republic Day.The clash had broken out after an unauthorised bike rally was taken out by RSS-affiliated students' group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in the city to commemorate the Republic Day and allegedly stones were pelted at them during the roadshow.

Introduction of electoral bond is 'violation of Constitution': Yechury

Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Saturday hit out at the Center for the introduction of the electoral bond, terming it as 'crony capitalism' and 'violation of the Constitution'.Yechury, while interacting with the media, stressed on the need to repeal the bond."This is nothing but crony capitalism of the highest order. It violates the constitution. It has to be repealed and this is what we have appealed to the Supreme Court," Yechury said.The Supreme Court on February 2, issued a notice to the Central Government after hearing a petition filed by Yechury challenging the electoral bonds.The top court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, also comprising Justices A. M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, issued the notice to the Centre on the same.The Centre had in its decision introduced electoral bond in elections, which was challenged by Yechury in the apex court.

Couple jumps into lake with minor daughter, all dead

A couple allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a lake along with their five-year-old daughter in the wee hours here today, police said. The deceased were identified as Nilesh Shinde (35), his wife Rupali (32) and daughter Ruhi, residents of Hanuman temple, Telankhadi near Ram Nagar, a police officer said. Police said they were informed about the incident at 8 am. "The family might have jumped into the lake around 4 am. The reason behind their extreme step is not yet known and investigation is on to ascertain that," the officer said. The bodies of the victims were fished out of the lake and sent for post-mortem. Further details are awaited.

Teacher arrested for touching inappropriately girl student

A school teacher was arrested for allegedly misbehaving and touching inappropriately a class 9 girl student at the premises of the educational institution in Jajpur district, police said today. The teacher, identified as Sanjaya Kumar Tripathy of Barapada government upgraded school, was arrested yesterday for allegedly touching the private parts of the 14-year-old student in the school on January 27, the police said. The incident came to the fore after the victim's family filed an FIR with the local police on Thursday. Tripathy asked the girl, to lock the rooms in the school building after classes were over. When she was doing so he misbehaved with her by touching her body inappropriately, said Rakesh Kumar Tripathy, Inspector In-Charge (IIC) of Balichandrapur police station. The girl narrated the incident to her mother after reaching home following which her mother approached the head master of the school on Monday. Woman harassed by 3 men in bus

A woman was allegedly harassed by three men in a roadways bus on Delhi-Saharanpur highway in neighbouring Shamli district, police said today. The accused also assaulted the woman's husband and father-in-law when they objected to their behaviour. The woman was on her way from Kandhla to Saharanpur, accompanied by her husband and father-in-law, last evening. The accused boarded the bus midway and started harassing her, the police said. Other passengers of the bus managed to nab one of the accused and handed him over to police, while the other two managed to flee. One of the accused has been arrested, police said.

Cop arrested over Sri Lankan newspaper editor's killing

A policeman in Sri Lanka has been arrested and remanded in police custody over the killing of a leading newspaper's editor, a vocal critic of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, nine years ago, officials said here. Lasantha Wickrematunga, the founder and editor of the Sunday Leader, was waylaid by some unidentified bike-borne assailants who gunned him down in the Colombo suburb of Ratmalana in January 2009. Sub Inspector Tissa Sugathapala, the officer in charge (crimes) of the Colombo suburban police station of Mount Lavinia, was accused of concealing and destroying information pertaining to the killing of Wickrematunga. The sub-inspector was yesterday remanded in two weeks police custody, the officials said. Wickrematunga was involved in a legal fight with Rajapaksas brother, the then powerful defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. 15 police encounters in UP in 2 days; 24 criminals arrested

A gangster was killed and nearly two dozen criminals were arrested by police in 15 encounters in different districts of Uttar Pradesh during the past two days, a police spokesperson said here today. The encounters took place in Bulandshahr, Shamli, Kanpur, Saharanpur, Lucknow, Baghpat, Muzaffarnagar, Gorkahpur, Hapur and Meerut. "As many as 24 wanted criminals were arrested and one gangster killed in 15 police encounters reported from 10 districts of the state over a span of 48 hours," the spokesperson said. Gangster Inderpal, who carried a reward of Rs 25,000, was gunned down by the Special Task Force in the encounter in Naglakhepad jungle yesterday. HC hears Delhi minister Satyender Jain's plea in benami case

The Delhi High Court has sought to know whether the adjudicating authority under the new benami law has passed any order on Delhi Health Minister Satyender Jain's plea to cross-examine witnesses in connection with the alleged benami case against him. Justice Rajiv Shakdher issued the direction on Jain's plea seeking a stay on the proceedings before the adjudicating authority on the grounds that the Initiating Officer's order to provisionally attach the assets allegedly belonging to him was passed without allowing him to cross-examine witnesses. Advocate Amit Anand Tiwari, appearing for Jain, submitted he has not been given any opportunity of cross-examination of witnesses, whose statements have been blindly relied upon to arrive at the findings. GST commissioner, eight others arrested in bribery case

The CBI has arrested a commissioner of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) department from Kanpur and eight others, including his staff and private officials, in connection with an bribery case. According to agency sources, Sansar Chand, a 1986-batch Indian Revenue Service officer, posted as the commissioner, two superintendents of the department, one personal staff and five private people were nabbed by the CBI in a late-night operation spread across Kanpur and Delhi. They said it is alleged that the commissioner was a "habitual" offender, taking bribes from businessmen on monthly and weekly basis, and it was during one such collection of Rs 1.5 lakh last night that he was nabbed. The man who allegedly gave the bribe has also been taken into custody, a source said. The sources said his wife is also named in the FIR but has not been arrested.
