A 35-year-old man, who was aspiring to go abroad, was allegedly killed by his travel agents in Bengaluru, police said today. Surinder Pal, a resident Kalyanpur village here, wanted to go to Canada and had got in touch with the agents, Superintendent of Police (SP), Investigation, Harpreet Singh said. Harminder Singh alias Shelly, G D Patel, Sanjeev and Naresh, who claimed to be agents, had promised to send him to Canada, the SP said. They instead took him to Bengaluru and allegedly killed him there about two months ago, Harpreet said. The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, follwoing a complaint by Pal's relative Gobind Singh. Gobind suspected that Pal was in the illegal custody of the travel agents in Bengaluru and lodged the complaint, the officer said. A well-known woman private detective, Rajani Pandit, was today arrested by the Crime Branch of Thane police for her alleged involvement in procuring call detail records (CDR) illegally. Police officials today said that the 54-year-old woman detectives name cropped up after four private detectives arrested earlier revealed her involvement. The four, whom police identified as Makesh Pandian (42), Prashant Palekar (49), Jigar Makwana (35) and Samresh Jha (32) alias Pratik Mohpal, were arrested on January 24 from Kalwa township here. "During their questioning, it was revealed that Pandit had purchased five CDRs from the arrested persons. On this basis, she was arrested today. She is being questioned for further leads and her statement is being recorded," the official informed. A man who drove a van into worshippers near a London mosque, killing one man and injuring a dozen others, was sentenced today to at least 43 years in prison for what a judge called a crime driven by "malevolent hatred." Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb said Darren Osborne's mind was "poisoned" by far-right ideas before the June 2017 attack targeting Muslims and that he had shown no signs of remorse. "Your mindset became one of malevolent hatred," the judge told the prisoner in the dock at Woolwich Crown Court. "This was a terrorist attack. You intended to kill." She sentenced Osborne, 48, to life with no chance of parole for 43 years, saying "the court has seen no evidence that the danger you present has lessened." No incident of ceasefire violation by Pakistan on the International Border has come to light in over a week in the areas guarded by the BSF, the force's Director General K K Sharma said today. However, any misadventure by the neighbouring country will get a befitting reply from the paramilitary force which has been deployed along the border, he warned. Speaking to reporters here, Sharma said there has been peace in the areas along the International Border since January 23-24, where the BSF is deployed. "No incident of ceasefire violation from Pakistan side has been reported in this area of late," Sharma said. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath today sought a report on the death of two girls, whose burned bodies were found in a village in Bulandshahr district. The chief minister directed officials of the district administration to take strict action against those responsible for the incident. The bodies of the two girls, aged 22 and 20, were found charred in separate rooms of their house in Baahpur village yesterday, according to police. The girls were cousins. Their family members, who had gone to the market, found the burnt bodies upon returning. A bottle of kerosene was found near one of the bodies and the other had a wire around its neck, police said. A case has been registered and a probe is on, they said.
The court of the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM), Cuttack Sadar today allowed the prayer of the police to go for a DNA test to solve the baby- swapping case that was reported from the SCB Medical College and Hospital here last month. Madhusmita, wife of Prahallad Mohapatra of Jajpur district, had alleged on January 28 that her newborn boy was replaced with a girl child in the gynaecology department of the hospital. Refusing to accept the girl child as its own, the couple had lodged a written complaint at the Mangalabag police station, demanding a DNA test to ascertain the truth. Accordingly, the police had made the prayer before the court. Modifying its 2012 order, the Supreme Court today asked the Madhya Pradesh High Court chief justice to constitute a dedicated bench to hear matters related to relief, rehabilitation and treatment of the Bhopal gas tragedy victims. A six-year-old girl child brought to a city hospital with injuries in her private parts, suspected to be from a sexual assault, died today, sources said. The minor girl was admitted at the Paediatric Emergency ward of the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) at around 4pm yesterday, hospital sources said. "She was bleeding from injuries in her private parts. The child was in decompensated septic shock with respiratory failure and multi-organ dysfunction. On detailed examination, doctors suspected sexual assault for which a medico-legal case was lodged. "In spite of the best efforts of doctors, the child could not be saved. She died at 12:45 am on February 2. The body has been sent for postmortem," a source said. Two Nepalese nationals were beaten to death by unidentified assailants and bodies dumped into a ditch at Sheel village in Shoghi, 13 Km from here, police said today. Navin (32), a resident of Ponta Sahib, and Chandra Prakash (19), a resident of Renuka, succumbed to death due to multiple head injuries and their blood-soaked bodies were recovered from the ditch after some locals informed the police, they said. The deceased were brothers-in-law and worked as driver and conductor of a public transport vehicle which has also been recovered, Shimla Superintendent of Police Ompati Jamwal said. Two Independent MLAs - Julias K Dorphang and John Leslee K Sangma, today submitted their resignation letters to Meghalaya Assembly Speaker A T Mondal ahead of the February 27 election, an official said. Dorphang, who is behind bars now after he was arrested last year for his alleged involvement in a sex scandal involving a minor girl and charged under POCSO, submitted his resignation through his counsel, they said. "We have received the resignation letters of Julias and John Leslee today. Their resignation letters have been forwarded to Speaker for information and necessary action," Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons told PTI. A court in Moscow has convicted a former provincial governor of taking a 400,000-euro (USD 500,000) bribe and sentenced him to eight years in prison. Lawyers for former Kirov regional Governor Nikita Belykh said they would appeal the verdict delivered late yesterday. Belykh has been in custody since he was arrested in June 2016 while accepting the money at a Moscow restaurant. He rejected the charges as provocation. Belykh's case was among a series of arrests of regional and federal officials intended to showcase Kremlin efforts to combat corruption. Prior to his appointment to the governor's job, Belykh led a liberal party, an untypical track record untypical for Russia's provincial leaders. The Delhi High Court today fixed March 13 for hearing Indian Forest Service officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi's contempt plea against the CBI for allegedly violating judicial orders that said the agency has no absolute exemption from disclosing information under the RTI Act. Justice V K Rao listed the matter for hearing in March after the counsel for the CBI informed that the basis on which the contempt plea is filed by the officer is subject matter of challenge before a division bench, which is scheduled to hear the appeal on March 5. Taking note of this, the single bench fixed the matter for hearing on March 13.
