Police today said they have suo motu (on their own) registered a case against Dakshina Kannada VHP district president Jagadish Shenava under Sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 116 (abetment of offence) of the IPC. Speaking at a book release function last week, Shenava had made the 'provocative' statement on the fatal attack on Abdul Basheer on January 3 in an apparent retaliation to the killing of a Bajrang Dal member Deepak Rao in the city on the same day. He had then said he would not be bothered even if the police filed a case against him for the remarks. The speech had drawn flak from various quarters and JD-S and Popular Front of India had demanded action against Shenava.
Lawyers representing former Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday sought more time from the Supreme Court to prepare themselves well for a case pertaining to the time period required for disqualifying lawmakers.According to the Geo TV, Nawaz's counsel Azam Tarar made this request to an apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar.The hearing is underway to determine the duration of disqualification of elected officials on the violation of Article 62(1)(f) and other related laws.Justice Nisar accepted the plea and directed Tarar to come prepared next week.The Pakistan Supreme Court had, on July 28, disqualified Sharif from holding the office of the prime minister and asked the National Accountability Bureau to file references against the Sharif family in connection with corruption cases against them.
The Calcutta High Court today directed a court in Alipore to commence trial in the death of model Sonika Chauhan, who was killed in an accident while being driven in a car allegedly by actor Bikram Chatterjee. Justice D P Dey directed the Chief Judicial Magistrate at Alipore to commit the case to the sessions court at Alipore within a month following which trial in the case would commence. Sonika's father Vijay Singh Chauhan moved a petition before the high court seeking expeditious trial in the case. Chauhan submitted in the petition that though the FIR was lodged in April, 2017 and charge sheet was filed in July, neither the case has been committed nor the trial has commenced. The owners of a firecracker storage unit in Bawana industrial area, where 17 people were recently killed in a massive blaze, were today sent to 14-day judicial custody by a Delhi court. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gagandeep Singh sent Manoj Jain and Lalit Goyal, owner and co-owner respectively of the factory, to Tihar Jail till February 13 after the police sought the same step to prevent them from tampering with evidence. "Both accused produced from police remand along with their counsel. Heard. File perused. Both accused be remanded to judicial custody till February 13," the magistrate said. The Supreme Court today directed that no single judge bench be constituted to hear and decide matters in the National Green Tribunal (NGT). A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra is hearing a petition filed by the NGT Bar Association challenging the constitutional validity of the National Green Tribunal (Practices and Procedures) Amendment Rules, 2017 that allows even a single member bench to perform judicial functions. "Let us tell you very candidly. We cannot allow single judge benches (at NGT)," the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said. The bench asked Attorney General K K Venugopal to advise the NGT's Acting Chairperson against setting up of a single judge bench, either at the head branch or the zonal branches of the green tribunal. The Supreme Court today posed searching questions to the Chhattisgarh government on the purchase of a AgustaWestland helicopter for VIP use in 2006-07 and asked what was the "interest" of Chief Minister Raman Singh's son in this. A bench comprising Justices A K Goel and U U Lalit asked the state about the allegations of irregularities in the purchase of helicopter and foreign bank accounts purportedly linked to the chief minister's son, on which a probe has been sought in the petitions filed before it. "What is the interest of Abhishek Singh, who also happens to be the son of the chief minister, in this? You have to satisfy us on that," the bench asked senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, who was representing the state. A court in this Chhattisgarh district has sentenced a 29-year-old man to life imprisonment for killing his wife and two children in 2015. Additional District and Sessions Judge (Katghora) Thomas Ekka yesterday pronounced Gayaram Kaushik guilty under IPC section 302 (murder) while sentencing him to life imprisonment, public prosecutor Shekhar Ram said today. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on him. Kaushik, a native of Dhritara village, had killed his wife Ambika Kaushik (then aged 23) and two sons - Yuvraj (5) and Lucky (2) - on October 15, 2015. Police had recovered the three bodies buried deep under a heap of cow dung in a field behind their home, the prosecutor said. The police said during interrogation, the accused admitted that he had killed his wife after she refused to have sexual intercourse with him that day. Later, in a fit of rage, he had also beaten up his two sons to death with an iron rod, the prosecutor said.

The Lokayukta police today caught an official of the Madhya Pradesh tribal welfare department while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 11,000. K K Dubey (50), posted at Morod village, was caught red-handed while taking the money from a Government Press clerk, Indore Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Dilip Soni said. Dubey told the clerk that there were several complaints of corruption against him, and the clerk should pay Rs 5 lakh if he wanted to 'close the matter'. Later Dubey settled for a mere Rs 11,000. After the clerk informed the Lokayukta police, a trap was laid and Dubey was caught red-handed while taking the money in Mhow Naka area, the SP said. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against him.
A minor girl has alleged that she was sexually exploited by Maoists including an 'area commander' of the outfit in Jharkhand, police said today. The 13-year-old girl told the Superintendent of Police, Anish Gupta, that she was inducted into the outfit by her her paternal uncle, a Maoist. The girl said she was fed up of the torture meted out to her by the squad members and three/four of them including 'area commander' Kandulana had allegedly exploited her sexually, they said. The girl told police that she managed to escape from the clutches of the Maoists after an encounter with security forces. He had resigned 11 months ago after a Malayalam TV channel released an audio clipping of a purported conversation of him with a woman. The police at Latur in Maharashtra have rescued four minor girls and arrested as many men under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after raiding a coffee shop. Raids were conducted yesterday at two coffee shops by 'Damini' squads (which probe anti-women crime) under the MIDC and Gandhi Chowk police stations limits, a senior police officer said. Four minor girls were rescued during a raid at a coffee shop under the MIDC station limits, and three men who had brought them there, and who were caught indulging in indecent behaviour with the girls, were arrested, police said. "The coffee shop owner was also arrested for helping them...he had made small cubicles where indecent activities were going on. He charged Rs 400 per hour for the cubicle," said Deputy Superintendent of Police, Latur City, Shilvant Dhavale. A Delhi court today rejected the bail plea of Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Shah in a 2007 money laundering case related to alleged terror financing. Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma, who had in August last year denied the relief to Shah citing the ongoing probe, dismissed his fresh bail plea. In his bail application filed through advocate M S Khan, the accused had told the court that investigation into the case was complete as the agency has filed its charge sheet and there was no chance for Shah to hamper the probe. The court had on August 22 last year rejected Shah's earlier bail plea after the ED said it was probing whether he had received money from countries such as Pakistan to promote terrorism in India. A man who beheaded his wife and dumped the body inside the box bed at their home has been nailed by his 14-year-old daughter. After killing his wife, the man identified as Binod Pathak wrapped the torso and the head in gunny bags, and hid them inside the bed box, police said. He then lodged a report with the police saying his wife Anu had gone missing. When the police visited his house to enquire about the missing case yesterday, the couple's daughter spilled the beans. She informed the police that her father had killed her mother with a sharp weapon and also showed them where the body was hidden. Binod and his wife did not have a sound relation for years as Binod had an extramarital relation with another woman and he killed her during a quarrel two days ago, the police said. A 45-year-old factory worker, who was missing since Monday, was found dead on the Phagwara- Dosanjh-Mukandpur road, police said today. The deceased, identified as Ram Sunder of local Gobindpura mohalla, was found lying near the fields near Virk village last night, they said. They said that the victim appeared to have been allegedly strangulated with a string. Sunder's family told the police that he had lent some money to a few acquaintances, the police said. The family claimed that one borrower had recently called him to give back the money. But Sunder went missing mysteriously, they said. A missing complaintwas lodged at local Satnampura police station, they said.
