A 23-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a rickshaw driver and his friend in Kondhwa area in the city, police said today. The incident took place on Wednesday night. Based on the woman's complaint, Kondhwa police arrested the rickshaw driver, Balaji Maruti Shinde (31), and his friend, Satish Jaypal Mane (23). The alleged incident took place after the woman boarded Shinde's rickshaw from Kondhwa's NIBM Road area. According to police, the woman is a divorcee and she currently stays with her parents in Yerwada area. On the night of the alleged crime, the woman had gone to Kondhwa to meet her former husband following a fight with her younger brother, a senior police officer said. Gold chains and bars valued at over Rs 30 lakh have been seized in four separate incidents over the past two days at nearby Nedumbassery International Airport, customs officials said. The seizures were effected yesterday and today by the air intelligence unit of the customs, they said. The Supreme Court today asked the CBI, the ED and the special public prosecutor appointed by it in the 2G spectrum scam case to file a status report on the probe carried out by ED officer Rajeshwar Singh in the Aircel-Maxis deal case. It said that it wanted to know against whom what investigation was pending or had been completed and what was the stage of the probe in the case. The bodies of three members of a family were recovered today from a house after police broke it open following neighbours' complaints of a foul smell emanating from the house. Inspector T Karunakar Rao of the LMD Colony Circle police station said that on a complaint by the neighbours about foul smell coming from a house in Vooturu village, police broke open the doors and found three decomposed bodies inside. "They were identified as Vangala Laxmi(60), her sons Vangala Venkataramana(40) and Srinivas(35). They might have consumed insecticide and died about three days ago," the official said. He said that the three kept to themselves and added that Laxmi's husband had died several years ago. "The cause of death can be ascertained only after post mortem. The bodies have been shifted to Karimnagar district hospital. Investigations are on in the case," he added.
The Jodhpur Police said today they have arrested a man they believe could be the key to unlock the mystery surrounding the killing of a Tamil Nadu policeman investigating a gold heist at a jewellery shop in Chennai. Inspector S Periyapandiyan (48) was killed early Wednesday in Rajasthan's Pali district, where he and other policemen from Tamil Nadu were sent to arrest the suspects involved in the heist in Chennai. The Jodhpur Police said they arrested Dinesh Jat, an accomplice of Nathuram, whose gang is believed to be behind the heist. The police said Jat was arrested during a burglary attempt in Shikargarh area of Jodhpur on Thursday night. The Delhi State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission said the deficiency of service on the part of the airline stands established. The Kerala High Court today granted bail to a prominent criminal lawyer C P Udayabhanu who was remanded in judicial custody after his arrest in a murder case of a real estate dealer in Thrissur district. Earlier, the high court had granted interim bail to Udayabhanu to attend the funeral of his relative. Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan also granted bail to two other accused in the case-Chakkara Johnny and Ranjith. The Madras High Court has issued guidelines to check harassment by police during investigation, saying it would not turn a blind eye to such conduct. Justice M S Ramesh said the power of an investigating officer to probe was unfettered only as long as such power was legitimately exercised within the framework of the Criminal Procedure Code. Hearing a plea yesterday by A N Lalman Lal and four others alleging police harassment under the guise of inquiry, the judge said normally the court would not interfere with the probe by a police officer by exercising its inherent powers under CrPC. Nevertheless, when brought to its notice, it would also not turn a blind eye to instances of harassment by police under the guise of investigation, Justice Ramesh said. Allowing the petition, the judge issued guidelines to be followed by investigating officers to curb harassment during such probes. The Kerala High Court today directed BJP Rajya Sabha MP and actor Suresh Gopi to appear before the police in connection with the probe into a case of alleged forging of documents to get his two luxury vehicles registered in Puducherry to evade vehicle tax in Kerala. A local court today rejected the anticipatory bail plea of social activist Aires Rodrigues, who has been booked on charges of sexually harassing and outraging modesty of a woman. However, Principle District and Sessions Judge Irshad Agha directed that the crime branch should give a 48-hour written notice in advance to Rodrigues in case of his arrest. A married woman had filed case against Rodrigues on November 27 accusing him of outraging her modesty, sexually harassing her and defaming her in public through his Facebook posts which had linked her with a Goa minister. The crime branch while opposing the anticipatory bail plea said they wanted to recover some material which was in possession of Rodrigues. Crime Branch inspector Dattaguru Sawant informed the court that the crime was "evil in nature" and the accused was not co-operating with the investigating agency. Three men were jailed in Hong Kong today for possessing and conspiring to make explosives ahead of a contentious 2015 vote on political reform. The trio, who were found guilty last month, were sentenced to up to three years and 10 months in prison as the judge said they had embarked on "a very dangerous path". They were detained at a time of heightened political tension in Hong Kong in 2015, following the failure of mass "Umbrella Movement" rallies to win democratic reform for the semi-autonomous city. "Although no end product was produced and recovered, the ingredients and know-how were there," judge Kevin Zervos told the court today, referring to the explosives plot. A court here sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his wife and son and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him. According to the prosecution counsel, on the night of May 13, 2016, Manoj Singh, a resident of Badsari Jagir, killed his wife, Neelam, and son, Rahul. Neelam's brother Anil Kumar Singh lodged a complaint in Maniyar police station. Additional District Judge V K Lal held Manoj guilty of killing his wife and son and sentenced him to life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs 20,000.
A 21-year-old college student committed suicide after she was allegedly molested by three youths in Badausa town here, police said today. In-charge of the Atara police station Durgvijay Sing said the woman hanged herself at her house. Based on a complaint filed by her father, a case was registered against the three youths for "molesting the woman and abetting the suicide". One of the three accused has been arrested, he said.
The Delhi High Court today directed the Centre, the AAP government and the police to ensure compliance of legal provisions on transporting cattle meant for slaughter, saying violation of these laws "cannot be countenanced". A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said that none of the authorities have been able to show compliance or implementation of the statutory regime and rules and underscored that action deserves to be taken on complaints and FIRs lodged against the violations. The court noted that while the petitioner has cited several instances of violations and lodging of FIRs, the authorities have not indicated a single violation. It also observed that the authorities, including the police have not even shown whether any prosecution was carried out pursuant to the FIRs. Pakistan's ousted premier Nawaz Sharif and his family today heaved a sigh of relief when the Supreme Court refused to reopen another corruption case against them. The three-member bench of Justice Mushir Alam, Justice Qazi Faez Isa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel rejected an appeal against a 2014 decision of the Lahore High Court that quashed the case for lack of evidence. The National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) had recently filed the appeal to reopen the Rs 1.2 billion Hudaibya Paper Mills case, involving money laundering charges against the Sharif family.
