Constable crushed to death by drunk IRB jawan in Jharkhand

A police constable was crushed to death under the wheels of a motorcycle driven by a jawan of Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB), allegedly in an inebriated state, in Dumka district, police said Thursday. The jawan, Sikandar Mandal, who was posted at Ranchi, was arrested following the incident, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Animesh Naithany said. The incident occurred Wednesday night near Kaju Pahar under the Paljhori police station when a vehicle checking drive was on. Mandal, who was allegedly in an inebriated state, ran over the police constable Sanjeev Kumar, injuring him seriously, Naithany said. Kumar was immediately rushed to a hospital in Deoghar district where the doctors declared him "brought dead", the police officer said. The victim was a resident of Meherma village under Godda district while Mandal is a resident of Jermundi in Dumka district. Woman commits suicide in Uttar Pradesh

A 26-year-old woman, embarrassed about a youth barging into her house while her family was away, allegedly committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, police said Thursday. The incident took place on Wednesday in a village under Dehat Kotwali police station area, they said. The youth, identified as Surendra Sharma, lives in deceased's neighbourhood. He barged into the woman's house when she was alone, Inspector in-charge Balendu Gautam said. While fleeing, he was caught by the woman's brother, beaten up and handed over to the police. Soon after, a huge crowd gathered before the woman's house, prompting her to commit suicide by hanging herself in her room, he said. On a complaint filed by the deceased's uncle, a case has been registered under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and Sharma has been arrested, Gautam said. A probe has been ordered into the incident, he said.

Indian-origin man arrested in US for sexual enticement of 11-yr-old

A 22-year-old Indian-origin man in the US has been arrested and charged with sexual enticement of a minor girl through social media, authorities have said. Sachin Aji Bhaskar, a resident of New York's Buffalo city, faces a minimum penalty of 10 years in prison, maximum of life in prison and a USD 250,000 fine. Assistant US Attorney Wei Xiang said Tuesday that Bhaskar, using a social media application in August, contacted the 11-year-old girl in Buffalo claiming to be 15. He picked her up by car and returned her home approximately three hours later after having sex with her. He made an initial appearance before US Magistrate Judge Kenneth Schroder and is being held pending a detention hearing. The criminal complaint is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Child Exploitation Task Force.

5-year-old girl raped by 12-year-old in Uttar Pradesh

A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 12-year-old boy in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district here, police said Thursday. The incident took place on Wednesday in a village under Kalan police station limits, they said. Police station in-charge Harendra Singh Tomar said the girl was playing outside her residence when the accused allegedly lured her to his house and raped her. The girl has been sent for a medical examination and investigation is underway, he said, adding that the accused is absconding.

The Supreme Court Wednesday closed contempt proceedings against Delhi BJP chief and MP Manoj Tiwari for breaking the civic agency's seal on a premises here in September even as it deprecated his action of taking law into his own hands. A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur slammed Tiwari, saying the court was "extremely pained" due to his conduct as he is an elected representative and should have behaved responsibly. The bench said Tiwari levelled frivolous allegations against court-mandated committee, which shows how "low he can stoop". The apex court also said that "misplaced political propaganda has no place" and "such practices should be deprecated". The apex court had on September 19 issued contempt notice against Tiwari, a MP from the north-east Delhi constituency, after taking note of a report filed by the monitoring committee which had alleged that the BJP leader had broken the seal of the premises. Criminal gets 10 years in jail in case of loot and murder

A special court here convicted a notorious criminal in a case of loot and murder and sentenced him to ten years imprisonment. Additional District Sessions Judge Arun Pathak also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the accused, Sanoj Kumar, after holding him guilty under the gangster act. Minor raped in Ghaziabad, accused held: Police

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Shalimar Garden colony here, following which the accused was arrested, police said Wednesday. The incident took place 10 days ago, they said, adding that it the matter came to light after the girl's mother approached the police Tuesday. A doctor in Texas with a passion for paleontology is challenging the federal government after authorities seized a 70 million-year-old dinosaur skull from his fossil collection. Dr. James Godwin argues that the government waited too long to file a forfeiture claim after it seized the Tyrannosaurus bataar skull that authorities say was among several fossils smuggled illegally out of Mongolia. Under the National Stolen Property Act, the government has five years from the time an offense is discovered to file a forfeiture lawsuit. Federal investigators said the skull was unearthed from the Gobi Desert between 2000 and 2011 and it traded hands several times before it ended up at a store in Wyoming, where Godwin acquired it. Agents seized the fossil from Godwin in July 2013 and a forfeiture claim was filed in August 2017.
