Former Karna minister Janardhana Reddy arrested, sent to judicial remand in Ponzi scam case

Mining baron and former Karnataka minister G Janardhana Reddy was arrested here Sunday after marathon questioning by police in connection with a multi-crore Ponzi scam case, a top police official said. Reddy, whose whereabouts were not known and remained incommunicado since Wednesday till he appeared at the Central Crime Branch (CCB) police office Saturday, was arrested after the intense questioning ended Sunday morning, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Alok Kumar told reporters. Later, he was produced before the 6th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court which remanded him to judicial custody till November 24. The CCB had been on the look out for Reddy, who was declared absconding by police last week in connection with a transaction worth crores of rupees allegedly linked to the ponzi scheme fraud involving hundreds of crores of Rupees. Interstate gang busted, 26-kg charas seized in J&K

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Sunday claimed to have busted an interstate gang of drug smugglers by arresting two persons along with 26 kg of high-quality cannabis in Samba district. Acting on a tip-off, a vehicle was stopped for checking at Mansar Morh and the alleged drug peddlers were arrested after the narcotics was found concealed in specially-designed chambers inside the body of the car, a police spokesperson said. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered, the spokesperson said, adding that more arrests were expected. Meanwhile, in Rajouri district, two persons were taken into preventive custody on Saturday for their alleged involvement in unlawful activities, the spokesperson added.

A woman has been charged after a "complex" investigation into an Australian strawberry scare where needles were found stuck into the fruit, police said Sunday, in a crisis that sparked nationwide panic. Guj: Farmer attempts suicide at CM Rupani's programme

A farmer Sunday attempted suicide by consuming pesticide at a public gathering of Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Pransli village of Gir Somnath district, some 400 kilometres form here, police said. Undertrial prisoner killed by convict in Odisha jail hospital

An undertrial prisoner was killed after a murder convict allegedly hit him with a brick in Balasore district jail hospital in Odisha on Sunday, jail officials said. The incident took place at the jail hospital where both of them had gone for treatment and picked up a quarrel over some trivial matter. Sarat Chandra Giri, who is serving life imprisonment in a murder case, suddenly got hold of a brick and hit the undertrial prisoner in the head with it, Superintendent of Balasore district jail, Subhakanta Mishra. Ramchandra Das was given preliminary treatment at the jail hospital and then shifted to Balasore district headquarters hospital where he succumbed to injuries. Das, a resident of Ghodapada village, was in jail custody for the last four days after being booked for involvement in illicit liquor business, jail officials said. Plea in HC to use Aadhaar biometrics to identify unnamed dead bodies

A plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a direction to the Centre and Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to utilise Aadhaar biometrics to identify unnamed dead bodies. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao is likely to hear the petition on Monday, which has been filed by social activist Amit Sahni seeking a direction to the Centre, UIDAI, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and all the states to scan biometrics of unidentified dead bodies and process them with Aadhaar portal to trace any pre-existing biometric details. In his plea, he sought directions to the Centre and UIDAI to share pre-existing Aadhaar details, if already there, without any delay, with the NCRB and states for identification of dead bodies. Maoists kill man suspecting him to be police informer

Maoists have shot dead a man after kidnapping him from Nawada village in Bihar's Gaya district, police said Sunday. City Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar said that the Maoists kidnapped the man, identified as Yogendra Yadav, from his village on Saturday night and shot him dead near the village on the same day. The Maoists left a pamphlet claiming that Yadav was a police informer, the SP said. Yadav's body has been sent to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital here for post-mortem examination.

Transport dept issues guidelines for retention of registration numbers of stolen vehicles

The Delhi Transport department has issued guidelines for retention of registration numbers of stolen vehicles to stop misuse of the provision. The department last week issued a circular laying down guidelines for retaining registration number of stolen vehicles, by putting a cap of 180 days for such applications after getting an untraced report from the police. "Earlier there was no such time limit for applying to retain registration number of stolen vehicles, and complaints of misuse of the provision were received," said a senior Transport department officer. As per the circular, now a vehicle owner can apply for retaining his stolen vehicle registration number after lodging an FIR and producing the untraced report along with application for retention of existing registration number of the vehicle. Staff of daily threatened over news about ganja seizure

A group of unidentified youngsters allegedly barged into the office of a Malayalam newspaper here and threatened the staff over publication of news related to seizure of ganja from a hostel, police said Sunday. They entered the office of "Kerala Kamudi" at Pettah and threatened a few employees present there late Saturday night. Police said the newspaper had recently published news about seizure of ganja from a students' hostel near the government medical college hospital here and arrest of some students. Drunk man kills friend in Samaypur Badli

A man was allegedly shot dead by his friend while they were drinking in Samaypur Badli of Rohini district, police said Sunday. Police arrest mining baron Janardhan Reddy in bribery case

Former BJP minister and Bellary's mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy was arrested on Sunday in an alleged bribery case, involving Ambident Group. He is suspected to have received 57 kg gold worth Rs 18 crore to help an accused in a case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).His arrest comes a day after Reddy appeared before the investigating agency after his anticipatory bail was rejected by the court. Pakistan police arrests 3 suspects in JUI-S chief's assassination case

Pakistan police has arrested three suspects in connection with the assassination of top cleric Maulana Samiul Haq, who was also known as the 'godfather of Taliban', according to a media report. Shop damaged after explosives go off; 1 arrested

A shopkeeper was arrested for allegedly storing explosive substances in his shop in Baseda village here, police said Sunday.
