The Central Pollution Control Board has shot show-cause notices to the Delhi Police commissioner and district magistrates of Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Noida over sale and bursting of unauthorised fire crackers despite the Supreme Court ban. The notices have been also sent to the Police Commissioner of Faridabad, Gurgaon and SP of Ghaziabad and Noida. In a letter, CPCB chairperson S P Singh Parihar has sought a report within seven days on action taken to "prevent sale of unauthorised fire crackers along with reason for non-compliance of the SC order". A retired Army Captain was arrested Saturday for allegedly duping people of several lakh rupees on the pretext of giving them jobs at a Navy canteen, a senior Crime Branch official said. The scam came to light Saturday morning when six of these job aspirants approached the Defence Audit Controller's office in south Mumbai with "appointment letters" as canteen attendants, the official said. "The candidates had received these letters from Delhi, On verification, they were found to be fake, following which an inquiry was initiated," he said. The six persons told police that they were students of Sarasvati Defence Academy in Andhra Pradesh's Vishakhapatnam city, he said. The Mumbai Police has booked over 100 people for violating the Supreme Court-prescribed guidelines regarding burning firecrackers during Diwali celebrations this year while lodging at least 53 cases against illegal firecracker vendors.In a statement, the Mumbai Police PRO said, "During Diwali this year, Mumbai Police has registered 53 cases on firecracker sellers and over 100 cases were registered on people violating prescribed guidelines of Supreme Court on burning of firecrackers."Most vendors were booked for selling crackers without license while cases were registered against people for violating the Supreme Court's time frame to burn fireworks. Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch of Odisha Police Saturday arrested four persons including a woman on charge of misappropriating Rs 2 crore from a regional rural bank. The arrests were made on a complaint by the regional manager of the rural bank, Odisha Gramya Bank (OGB), the police said. The accused were identified as Prasanna Kumar Jena, the former branch manager of bank's Rasulgarh branch, Bikram Keshari Pradhan, his wife Rajalaxmi Pradhan and Madan Mohan Pradhan. The four have been arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), 467 (forgery), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine forged document) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy. According to the complaint, the four accused availed Rs 2.02 crore loan on the pretext of buying vehicles by producing fake documents. After availing the loan they misappropriated the amount. An 87-year-old man was stoned to death allegedly by his son in Dhama village of Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district Saturday, police said. The deceased was identified as Lal Chand. Daulat Ram (47) fled away from the spot after killing his father, Kullu SP Shalini Agnihotri said, adding that a police team apprehended him from a nearby forest area. Three policemen were allegedly roughed up in an Uttar Pradesh village where they had gone in connection with a dowry-harassment case, police said. One person was arrested for allegedly running an illegal arms factory at Tamtha village here, police said Saturday. Police seized seven pistols, two 12-bore cartridges and one 315-bore cartridge from his possession, SP (north) Rohit Singh Sajwan said. Acting on a tip-off, sleuths raided Tamtha village which comes under the jurisdiction of Jhangha police station and arrested Jai Prakash Vishwakarma. Over 100 cases were registered in Mumbai for violation of the Supreme Court order on setting off firecrackers during Diwali, police said Saturday. The SC had last month permitted sale and manufacture of low emission "green" firecrackers countrywide and fixed a two-hour time period (8pm-10pm) for bursting them on Diwali and other festivals. The state home department had asked the police to implement the SC directive on firecrackers and ensure action against those violating the deadline. More than 100 cases were registered in various parts of the metropolis against people who burst firecrackers after the 10 pm deadline, the police added.
