Brazil's Lula to face new corruption probe judge on Wednesday
Former Brazil president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will be questioned next week in relation to another Operation Car Wash case in which he is accused of corruption and money laundering. The 73-year-old is already serving a 12-year prison sentence for accepting a bribe in a separate case related to the ongoing and wide-ranging Car Wash investigation into graft. Questioning Lula, currently incarcerated in Curitiba in the south of Brazil, will be judge Gabriela Hardt, who has taken over the Car Wash investigation from the man who jailed the ex-president, Sergio Moro, recently named Justice Minister by president-elect Jair Bolsonaro. The US judge overseeing the New York trial of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman ruled Thursday that the notorious drug baron could not hug his beauty queen wife, as requested, just before opening statements are to begin. Police officer removed from service for taking bribe in Kerala
A police officer was removed from service Thursday for allegedly taking bribe from some of the accused in a suspected honour killing case in Kerala. Two police personnel, ASI Biju and police driver Ajaya Kumar of Gandhinagar police station near Kottayam, were arrested and suspended for allegedly taking bribe from some of the people accused of killing a 23-year-old man in May this year. Biju was removed from service on Thursday, according to an order by Kottayam district police chief Hari Sankar. The department also cancelled service benefits to Kumar for three years. Kevin P Joseph, a Dalit Christian, was abducted on May 27 by a gang allegedly engaged by his fiancee's family, who were opposed to their move to marry. His body was found in a river in Kollam district a day later. Police had said the ASI and the driver, on a night patrol on May 26, had intercepted a car being used by the gang after noticing that its number plate was hidden. Woman facing mental, physical harassment at workplace approaches HC
A woman employee of the Tamil Nadu forest department has approached the Madras High Court, alleging that her office in-charge has been abusing her mentally and physically. In her plea, she has demanded installation of CCTV cameras at workplace to ensure protection. The woman has been working in the Madukarai Range (Coimbatore district). When the plea was taken up Thursday, Justice S Vimala issued a notice to the principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF), returnable by two weeks. The petitioner said that she has been working as a computer operator since March 2017 and alleged that a forester, also her office in-charge, began harassing her verbally and physically. The woman said since she was the only woman employee, she could not share the details of the harassment with anyone. Later, the woman said she lodged a complaint with the forest ranger but he failed to act and she continued facing the ordeal. Hyderabad police register 71 cases for bursting crackers after 10 pm on Diwali
The Hyderabad Police on Thursday said that they have registered 71 cases on persons in various places of the city for bursting firecrackers after 10 pm on the occasion of Diwali yesterday.Speaking to ANI over the phone, Additional Commissioner (Crimes and SIT) of Hyderabad, Shika Goel said, "Implementing the Supreme Court order, we have registered 71 cases under Section 22/77 on the persons in various places of the Hyderabad city for bursting crackers after 10 pm."Before Diwali, the Hyderabad Police released a notification for the public, warning them to not burst crackers after 10 pm on Diwali. The police also warned that cases would be booked against the violators under the City Police Act.The Supreme Court had allowed bursting of firecrackers from 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali. It had also allowed the manufacture and sale of only green crackers, which have a low light and sound emission and have less harmful chemicals.
Woman gang-raped, stick inserted in private parts in J'khand
A woman died after she was allegedly raped by three men, including her former husband, and a stick was inserted in her private parts in Jamtara district of Jharkhand, police said Thursday. Sub-Divisional Police Officer B N Singh said the woman's ex-husband has been arrested a search is on to arrest the two others. According to police, the woman had gone to watch a play at a theatre on Kali puja on Wednesday night. Her former husband and two of his associates forcibly took her to a field in the village under Narayanpur police station area. After raping her, they inserted a stick in her private parts, police said. On hearing the woman's cries for help the next morning, villagers took her to a hospital in Narayanpur town from where she was referred to Jamtara Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. 23-yr-old man arrested for setting ablaze 18 vehicles in Delhi
Delhi police has arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly setting ablaze 18 vehicles in south Delhi's Madangir Village, police said Thursday. The accused was identified as Vijay Shukla and a country-made pistol and some matchboxes were found from his possession, a senior police officer said. In a video of the incident which had gone viral, a man was seen setting fire to the vehicles after opening the fuel pipe of the motorcycles. Petrol overflowed from the tanks of six motorcycles after which they were set on fire by a match stick. The cars parked nearby also caught fire, the officer said. The police rushed to the spot after receiving information of the incident at around 3.05 am Tuesday and doused the flames. Complete ban on firecrackers not possible without people's cooperation: Officials
It is not possible to implement a complete ban on firecrackers till people give their full cooperation, Delhi Police officials said Thursday, as air quality here dipped due to bursting of fire crackers in violation of a Supreme Court order. They admitted there were violations of the court order, despite constant patrolling by around 10,000 police personnel on Diwali night, saying it is not possible to monitor every violation considering the population of Delhi. The Supreme Court had allowed people to burst firecrackers from 8 pm to 10 pm only on Diwali and other festivals. 45-yr-old man shot dead over card game
A 45-year-old man was shot dead allegedly by a group of men after an altercation during a game of cards turned ugly, police said Thursday. They later dumped his body near the Maharaja Agarsen Hospital in west Delhi, they said. The deceased was identified as Harish Sharma (45). Police said Sharma left his residence on Wednesday night and his body with a bullet injury on his right shoulder was found on Thursday. The perpetrator of the shooting incident in the Borderline Bar and Grill in California's Thousand Oaks city was on Thursday identified as Ian David Long.Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean confirmed that the 28-year-old was found dead in an office near the bar, CNN reported. : The National Commission for Scheduled Caste has directed the police to file the chargesheet in the case related to recent beheading of a teenage Dalit girl in a village near Athur in Salem district of Tamil Nadu. The commission has taken up the case on its own and sent a notice to the district Collector and police department for follow-up, its vice-chairman L Murugan said Thursday. Police on Thursday arrested five people from a minority community for allegedly slaughtering a cow at Bankul in South Tripura district. The five were held on the basis of a complaint from villagers, they said. "We arrested them on Wednesday and placed the accused before the court of Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate of Sabroom. The court released them on bail," SP Jaal Singh Meena told PTI. A teenaged girl was allegedly murdered after suspected rape and the body set on fire to hide her identity at Lakshmipuram this district, police said Thursday. Though the incident took place on Tuesday night, it came to light only when the semi-burnt body of the minor girl was found near a forest department depot at Lakshmipuram Wednesday morning. The victim was a resident of Kotaveedhi area in Chodavaram and a second-year intermediate student of government junior college. A 19-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his neighbour on Thursday after a scuffle broke out between the two when the victim refused to take the accused out for shopping on his motorcycle in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri area, police said. Delhi cops rescue two businessmen, recover ransom amount
The Delhi Police rescued two businessmen who were kidnapped on Sunday and also recovered a ransom amount of Rs 25.50 lakh from the accused. The accused, identified as Azim Khan, 31, and Kamran Khan, were arrested. On November 6, the police received a call regarding the kidnapping of the businessmen, a senior police official said Thursday. Immediately, police swung into action and several teams were constituted. A massive search was initiated in the suspected hideouts on the base of technical surveillance and both the kidnapped persons -- natives of Mumbai and Odisha-- were rescued. Six drug peddlers arrested in separate incidents in Delhi
Six men, including a person who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, were arrested in separate incidents for allegedly supplying drugs in different parts of Delhi, a police officer said Thursday. The accused were identified as Idrish (38), Rizwan Ahmed (32), residents of Kacchi Khajuri in Delhi, Kamal Kant Sharma (35), Mahender alias Baba (45), Parvez Khan (64) and Ram Bharose (58). Police have seized 2.25 kg of charas and 500 gram of heroin worth Rs 1.5 crore along with two motorcycles from their possession, Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) A K Singla said.
