France says 85 million euros paid to victims of 2015 terror attack

Victims and relatives of the 130 people killed by jihadist attackers in and around Paris in November 2015 have received 85 million euros (USD 97 million) in compensation to date, the fund managing the payments said Tuesday. The attackers targeted the Stade de France stadium with suicide bombs, while gunmen also stormed the Bataclan and targeted patrons at cafes and restaurants in eastern Paris on November 13, 2015. As of November 1, 2,625 people have lodged claims and received payouts over lost relatives or injuries or trauma suffered during the attacks at the football stadium and the Bataclan. Of those, 856 cases have been fully settled, meaning their physical or psychological health has "stabilised", Julien Rencki, head of the FGTI compensation fund for terror victims, said at a press conference Tuesday. In total, the fund expects to pay compensation of some 300 million euros, after 70 new claims were filed since January, "two and a half years after the November 13 attacks," Rencki .

Delhi govt directs top official to lodge complaint against Tiwari

Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain on Tuesday directed the additional chief secretary (home) to lodge a police complaint against state BJP chief Manoj Tiwari for allegedly indulging in violence at the Signature Bridge inauguration. In his note to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Manoj Parida, Jain said Tiwari and his associates indulged in hooliganism to overawe the highest functionaries of the government at the event where Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other cabinet ministers were present. Karat asks NHRC to reconsider demand for enhanced compensation to next of kin of lynching victims

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat Tuesday questioned the reported decision of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to close a 2016 case of compensation related to the lynching of two people allegedly by cow vigilantes in Jharkhand. She demanded that the families of the victims are given adequate compensation. She expressed concern over the decision to close the case relating to compensation for the next kin of M Ansari and Imtiaz Khan, who were lynched allegedly by cow vigilantes in Latehar, Jharkhand in March, 2016. Karat said the rights body's job is to uphold the human rights but its act in the very case was "extremely disappointing". Gay man kills his partner's friend

A 25-year-old man was arrested Sunday for allegedly killing a man after finding him in bed with his male partner at the latter's residence in suburban Bandra, the police said Tuesday. The accused is identified as Dhaval Unadkat, an IT professional, and the deceased as Parth Raval, an MBA graduate, an official said. The incident took place in the apartment of Unadkat's partner on Hill Road, Bandra West. The official said Unadkat hit Parth Raval on his head with a candle stand after finding him in bed with his partner. Unadkat also allegedly tried to strangulate his partner, who is the complainant in the case, with a mobile phone charger cord, he said. Unadkat and the complainant then took profusely bleeding Raval to the Bhabha Hospital in Bandra and then to Lilavati Hospital, the official said. Choksi's associate arrested, court grants 3-day transit to ED

An executive of a firm linked to fugitive Mehul Choksi was arrested from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose airport here by ED officials under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, officials said Tuesday. Deepak Kulkarni was arrested Monday night in connection with the money-laundering probe in the USD 2-billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case when he landed there from Hong Kong, they said. He was produced before a city court on Tuesday and Metropolitan Magistrate, 3rd Court, Calcutta, Jyotirmoy Bhattacharyya granted three-day transit sought by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to take him to Mumbai, where the case was registered. Kulkarni is allegedly linked to the overseas businesses of Choksi, one of the main accused in the case, and the ED had notified a look out circular against him, the officials said. Two women held with Rs 42L worth of gold bars at Delhi airport

Two Mumbai-bound women have been apprehended by the CISF at the IGI Airport here on Tuesday for allegedly trying to smuggle eight small gold bars worth Rs 42 lakh by concealing them in shoes, a senior official said. The incident took place early on Tuesday when a woman security personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detected some suspicious items in the shoe of one of the women, who was identified as Karishma Thakur. Eight small gold bars were recovered from the woman's shoes, the official said. A CISF spokesperson said Thakur was accompanied by another woman and they had landed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport from Chennai and were supposed to take a flight to Mumbai. PDP leader Madani's mother dead

: Leader of People's Democratic Party (PDP) Abdul Nasser Madani's mother Asma Beevi passed away at a private hospital in the district after prolonged illness. She was 67. Beevi was suffering from cancer for sometime and Madani was beside her when the end came, family sources said. An accused in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blasts case, Madani had reached the state on October 30 to visit his ailing mother after a National Investigation Agency (NIA) trial court in the capital of Karnataka granted him special permission. Madani visited Beevi at the hospital on the day he arrived, they said. The leader is on bail in the case but he is not permitted to leave Bengaluru without court permission, PDP sources said. Though the PDP leader had been granted permission to stay till November 4, it was extended later for eight more days by the court based on his request citing the worsening condition of his mother, they added.

Honey-trap racket busted in Kota, 3 arrested

Two women and a man who were part of a honey-trap racket were arrested here for allegedly blackmailing a businessman, the police said Tuesday. Operating in Rajasthan, the trio were threatening to lodge a false rape case against Kishan Bihari Yadav, a resident of Lanka colony in Baran district, if their demands were not met, they said. Sandhya Rajput alias Golu (27), Muskan (21) both from Indore, Madhya Pradesh and Muskan's husband Jugraj Rajput (28) from Jhalawar, Rajasthan were arrested on Monday, police said. The police was alerted about the gang when Yadav lodged a complaint on November 4. He told the police that a woman befriended him over the phone and later called him to Kota for a meeting. Subsequently, they developed a physical relationship, police said. Two days after the meeting, the gang began blackmailing Yadav and asked him to cough up Rs 10 lakh, they said. 2 home guard officials suspended after 25 women personnel allege harassment in Surat

Two home guard officials have been suspended and a probe ordered against them after 25 women home guards in Gujarat's Surat city accused them of harassment and seeking sexual favours, a senior official said Tuesday. The women personnel had approached Police Commissioner (city) Satish Sharma last week with a written complaint. "As soon as we received the written complaint from the women home guards against their senior officials, we suspended them (the two seniors) and handed over the inquiry into it to a deputy superintendent of police-level officer," Commandant General, Home Guards, P B Gondia said. He said statements of 19 out of the 25 complainants have already been recorded and the process was on to record the statements of others. IL&FS crisis: IndusInd Bank moves NCLAT to recover Rs 25 crore interest

IndusInd Bank has approached the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal to recover outstanding interest amount of Rs 25 crore from crisis-hit IL&FS group to avoid being classified as an NPA account. A two-member NCLAT bench headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya has issued notice to the government. The appellate tribunal has directed to list the matter on November 13, when it would hear the main matter. Last month, the government superseded the board of IL&FS to protect the interest of investors. IndusInd Bank is one of the largest lenders to IL&FS group with exposure of over Rs 3,000 crore. According to the counsel appearing for IndusInd Bank, if IL&FS fails to pay the interest amount due to the bank, it will be classified as an NPA account as per the RBI guidelines. 100 kg of illegal firecrackers seized in Dwarka; 5 arrested

The Delhi police has arrested five people and seized over 100 kg of illegal firecrackers from their possession in Dwarka, officials said Tuesday. The accused were arrested for storing the crackers without licence. The Dwarka police have registered five cases following the Supreme Court order on sale of old firecrackers. During regular patrolling at Hastsal market on Monday, the police got information that one Satish Katyal was storing illegal crackers. When asked for a license, the accused failed to produce one, officials said. The accused was arrested and 47 kg of crackers were recovered from his possession, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse, adding the accused was booked last year also in connection with the same offence. Man gets life term for killing live-in partner's toddler daughter

A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for beating to death his live-in partner's three-year-old daughter with a rolling pin as the woman was not agreeing to marry him. The court said it was a pre-mediated crime as the man had a motive to commit the offence. Additional Sessions Judge Lalit Kumar convicted Narej Sheikh for the offence of murder under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Woman serves 10-year jail term in drugs case, HC acquits her

She succeeded in getting the stigma of conviction removed by the Delhi High Court in a narcotics case, but not before having served the full 10-year jail term imposed by a trial court. The foreign national was arrested on October 15, 2008 for allegedly possessing contraband Heroin in her luggage at the airport here. Activist Arun Ferreira, who was arrested in August for alleged Maoist links along with others, Tuesday told a court here that he was "hit" by the investigating officer. In a submission made before additional sessions court judge R V Adone through his lawyer Sidharth Patil, Ferreira said he was "hit" on his face "eight to ten times" by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Shivaji Pawar on November 4 during interrogation. CBI announces reward for info about RTI activist's murder

The CBI on Tuesday announced a Rs 5 lakh reward for information about the 2012 murder of a Right to Information (RTI) activist at Virar in neighbouring Palghar district, an official said. A Special Task Force of the Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the murder of activist Premkant Shivji Jha. The STF issued an advertisement in Marathi newspapers Tuesday, announcing a cash reward for anyone providing detailed information about the culprits, the official said. Identity of the informant will remain confidential, he added. Jha was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Virar on February 24, 2012 when he was riding a motorbike. The bullets pierced his helmet and entered the head. HC acquits man in 18-year-old kidnapping cum murder case of businessman

The Delhi High Court has acquitted a man of the charge of kidnapping and strangulating a businessman and disposing of his body in a well 18 years ago, saying the prosecution failed to prove his guilt. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Vinod Goel allowed accused Deepak Sarna's appeal while setting aside his conviction and life sentence awarded by a trial court for the offences in February 2004. "...the prosecution has not been able to prove each of the links in the chain of circumstances or that the proved circumstances point unmistakably to the guilt of the appellant (Sarna). "In any event, the trial court erred in convicting the appellant for the substantive offences under Sections 302 (murder), 364 (kidnapping) and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the IPC when there was no charge framed against him to that effect," the bench said. Asian Corp Consultancy settles case with Sebi

Asian Corporate Consultancy along with one Dilip Anantrai Desai has settled a probe by markets regulator Sebi into alleged violation of portfolio managers norms on payment of Rs 7.4 lakh towards settlement charges. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) agreed to settle proposed adjudication proceedings in the case after it was approached by the two entities with a plea under the settlement regulations. Under the settlement, an entity is allowed to settle charges by paying a penalty without admission or denial of guilt. "The pending adjudication proceedings initiated against the noticees (Asian Corporate Consultancy and Desai) ... are disposed of in terms of...the settlement regulations," Sebi said in a settlement order passed on Monday. SC collegium remits several names sent for appointment as judges of Orissa HC

The Supreme Court collegium has remitted as many as six out of the eight names sent to it for appointment as judges of the Orissa High Court, where judicial work has been hit by lawyers' strike since August end. The apex court collegium, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph, has remitted the names sent to it by the hight court saying that they do not qualify the existing norms. As per October 31 resolution uploaded on the apex court's website, the collegium has said that recommendation regarding one out of the eight names would be taken up for consideration after some time. Besides, it has sent back another name for re-consideration by the high court collegium.
