Physically challenged vendor beaten to death by UP cops

A physically challenged vendor was allegedly beaten to death by some policemen following which irate locals staged a blockade on the Agra-Aligarh highway, officials said Tuesday. Vimal, 45, was allegedly thrashed to death by the personnel of Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday night in Sadar area over a monetary dispute, they said. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment, police said. The locals of the area blocked the highway in protest and demanded compensation for Vimal's family and arrest of the accused policemen. The irate mob also damaged some vehicles by pelting stones at them, police said. District Magistrate (DM) Rama Shankar Maurya and Superintendent of Police (SP) Jaiprakash reached the spot and ordered the immediate suspension of sub-inspector (SI) Ashish Yadav, they said. Undertrial Pakistani prisoner dies in Jammu

A 65-year-old undertrial Pakistani prisoner, arrested for crossing the border illegally, died during treatment at a hospital here, police said Tuesday. Doulat Din, a resident of Sialkot, was arrested in 2013 for illegally crossing the International Border into Jammu and lodged in Amphalla jail, they said. They added that the prisoner fell sick on October 25 and was admitted to the Government Medical College hospital, where he died Monday. "He was not mentally fit and was also facing multiple organ failure. He breathed his last yesterday," the officials said. Police said the body of the deceased was lying at the hospital as doctors are waiting for completion of formalities to conduct an autopsy.

Man beaten to death by son in UP's Bijnor

A 60-year-old man was killed allegedly by his son in Seohara village here following a argument over the former's drinking habits, police said Tuesday. Deceased Yashpal had an altercation with his son, Rahul (37), on Monday after the latter tried to stop him from consuming alcohol, they said, adding that as the argument got heated, the son hit with a spade. Yashpal was killed on the spot, officials said. The accused fled from the scene after the incident and the matter is being investigated, they added.

Man killed after DSP pushes him in front of moving car in Kerala

A 32-year-old man was killed after being pushed in front of a moving car allegedly by a senior police officer at Neyyatinkara near here, police said Tuesday. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) (Neyyatinkara) B Harikumar, who is on the run, has been suspended and a case registered against him under Section 302 of the IPC (murder), they said. The victim, Sanal, sustained severe injuries in the incident and died later at a hospital, officials said. Trouble broke out on Monday night after Harikumar asked Sanal to move his car which he had parked on the side of the road. A scuffle ensued during which the official pushed Sanal in front of a moving car, local residents told television channels. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in Kozhikode that the official has been suspended as the complaint was of a serious nature. 4 puppies allegedly burnt in garbage dump; 3 dead, 1 injured

Four puppies sleeping in a garbage dump here were allegedly set on fire by some people, leaving three dead and the other seriously injured, police said Tuesday. The incident occurred Saturday following which a member of an animal welfare organisation lodged a complaint on November 5 alleging that some people set the puppies ablaze, they said. A case under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and IPC was registered, they added. Investigation revealed that some people had set the garbage ablaze at the site trapping the puppies sleeping there, police said, adding the injured pup was shifted to a veterinarian hospital.

Three held for 'gang-rape' of woman in Telangana

A 25-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by three people in a house here following which they were arrested, police said Tuesday. Under the pretext of offering some work, a man identified as Jaipal met the woman near a toddy shop Saturday night and took her to his house where she was allegedly gang-raped by him and two of his friends, they said. Later, she lodged a complaint based on which a case of gangrape was registered and the trio was arrested Monday, they added.

Couple arrested in Bihar for beating 28-yr-old son to death

A couple was arrested in Bihar's Khagaria district on Tuesday on the charge of beating their son to death over a family dispute, a police officer said. The deceased, Arbind Kumar Chaurasia, 28, was allegedly caned to death by his parents at Maheskhunt village in Gogri sub-division of the district on Monday night, following an altercation, he said. "Chaurasia, who had deserted his wife, would regularly engage in fights with his parents over the matter. He was also having an extra-marital affair," Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) P K Jha said. On Monday, too, he had a fight with the parents, following which he was beaten to death, he noted. An FIR has been lodged in the case at Maheshkhunt police station and an investigation is underway, Jha said, adding that Chaurasia's body has been sent to Khagaria Sadar Hospital for postmortem.

TRS leader stoned to death

A local leader of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Narayana Reddy has allegedly been stoned to death in this district.Reddy's body was found in Sultanpur village of Pargi this morning. Following the incident, the deceased leader's supporters beat up two Congress supporters. SBI fraud: 8 bank officials, Harshad Mehta's brother acquitted

A Mumbai court has acquitted nine people, including Ashwin Mehta, brother of 1992 securities scam kingpin Harshad Mehta, in a case of duping the State Bank of India (SBI) to the tune of Rs 105 crore. Justice Shalini Phansalkar Joshi, who presides over the special court set up for cases related to the 1992 securities scam, said in her judgement last week that there was no hesitation in holding that that the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt. Ashwin Mehta was a constituted attorney of Harshad Mehta and also one of the stock brokers in his brother's firms. Apart from Ashwin Mehta, those acquitted are Rama Sitharaman, officer in-charge of securities division of the SBI, and seven other officials -- Bhushan Raut, C Ravi Kumar, S Suresh Babu, P Muralidharan, Ashok Agarwal, Janardhan Bandhopadhyay and Shyam Sundar Gupta. NIA files charge sheet against NSCN (K) cadres in kidnapping case

The National Investigation Agency on Monday filed a charge sheet against five Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland--Khaplang (NSCN-K) cadres before the Special NIA court in Shillong for allegedly kidnapping an employee of a construction company based in Guwahati.The five accused identified as Gaisinglung Meiringmei, Deputy Secretary of NSCN-K and other members namely Khamjang Rongmei, Dimchuingam Ruangmei, Ganthoulung Rongmei and wife of the General Secretary Tanthaoliu Gonmei have been charged for committing various offences under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967 and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).The case pertains to the kidnapping of an employee of Bharti Infra Projects Limited for ransom. 1 killed, 2 injured in California shooting

A person died and two others were injured in a shootout at a California detox centre early on Monday.Authorities were alerted about a shooting incident at the Helen Vine Detox Center in San Rafael at around 1:33 am (local time).Sergeant Michael Brovelli, from the Marin County Sheriff's Office, said that the police found three victims -- two men and a woman, Fox News reported.While one of the men succumbed to his injuries, the two others were rushed to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. Arizona boy kills grandmother, self, after told to clean his room

An 11-year-old boy in Arizona reportedly shot his grandmother in the back of the head and then turned the gun on himself, apparently because he was upset at being asked to clean his room. Yvonne Woodard, 65, was shot on Saturday in her home in the town of Litchfield Park, northwest of Phoenix, as she watched television with her husband. The couple had full custody of the child and the grandfather told police that he had been asked to clean his room all day but had refused. Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sergeant Joaquin Enriquez told local media that the couple were sitting on their couch watching TV when the boy came up behind his grandmother and shot her. The grandfather ran after the boy but then went back to help his wife, at which time the boy shot himself. Police said the gun belonged to the grandfather.

Man stabbed to death as his shoulder brushed past accused at Rohini: Police

A 20-year-old man was allegedly stabbed to death by three-four unidentified men after his shoulder brushed past one of the accused at Rohini's Vijay Vihar area, police said Monday. The deceased was identified as Ravi, a resident of Jalalpur in Uttar Pradesh, they added. According to the police, the incident took place on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. A police official said on his way home from work, Ravi's shoulder brushed past a man who was coming from the opposite direction. A quarrel erupted between the victim and the accused, who was accompanied by his friends, the police said. The accused subsequently took out a knife and stabbed Ravi multiple times on his chest, the official said. Ravi was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead, he added. The body was handed over to his family members after post-mortem, the police said, adding that a case was registered in this regard and a probe was on.

Prime accused of Varanasi mall shooting incident nabbed: Police

A Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth student was arrested for his alleged involvement in the October 31 shooting incident in an upmarket Varanasi shopping Mall in which two persons were killed and two others injured, the police said Monday. Prime accused Alok Upadhyay was arrested from a bogey of the Farakka Express train at Cant railway station, the police said. Hiding in Ara district of Bihar after the incident, Alok was on his way to Lucknow, the police added. Soon after the shooting incident, the police had launched a manhunt to nab the miscreants and had been able to trace Alok's location by keeping his mobile phone on surveillance, they said. The police said they had earlier arrested Alok's accomplice Rohit Singh. Alok is presently being interrogated by a Crime Branch team to ascertain his exact role in the crime, they said. Builder arrested for duping home buyers of Rs 30 cr

The Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police has arrested a builder for allegedly duping several buyers in a group housing project at Faridabad to the tune of approximately Rs 30 crore, an official said Monday. The accused was arrested on November 1, he said. The accused created a false impression of being a reputed builder and lured people to book flats and apartments and collected huge amounts from them, police said. 4 members of inter-state auto-lifter gang arrested: Police

Four members of a suspected inter-state auto-lifter gang, including its leader, were arrested, police said Monday. The accused were identified as Sariq Sata (47), Furkan Sheikh (40), Sageer Ahmed (34), Sikender (28) and Sariq, they added. With these arrests, seven members of the gang were nabbed and 51 stolen vehicles recovered from their possession, the police said. Sata, the alleged kingpin of the gang had 43 cases registered against him, a senior police officer said, adding that he was carrying a reward of Rs one lakh on his arrest by the Delhi Police and Rs 20,000 by the Sambhal police. In all, seven members of the gang were arrested so far and 51 stolen vehicles recovered, the officer said. Earlier, three members of the gang -- Kalia alias Safruddin, Tirath and Naveen -- were arrested, he added.
