The Supreme Court has ended the court fight over repealed Obama-era "net neutrality" rules that required internet providers to treat all online traffic equally. The court on Monday rejected appeals from the telecommunications industry seeking to throw out a lower court ruling in favour of the "net neutrality" rules. The Federal Communications Commission under President Donald Trump has rolled back the rules, but the industry also wanted to wipe the court ruling off the books. Conservative Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas would have granted the industry's request. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh took no part in the case without offering any reason. Kavanaugh ruled on the issue while an appeals court judge and Roberts has an investment portfolio that includes telecommunications companies.
Two men were arrested and a juvenile was apprehended for allegedly cheating people through Paytm, police said Monday. The accused were Islamuddin alias Mustkeem (20), Wasim alias Ansar (26), both residents of Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh, and a juvenile, they added. According to the police, on October 26, Vishesh Aggarwal, who ran a hardware shop in the Bharat Nagar area here, filed a complaint at the New Friends Colony police station regarding two fraudulent transactions from his Paytm account of Rs 12,999 and Rs 1,799 respectively, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal said in a statement. Police registered an FIR against Union minister Rajen Gohain and five other political leaders Monday for allegedly making provocative statements to divide two communities in Assam in connection with the Tinsukia killings. The police said a complaint was filed by Inamul Haque Laskar, general secretary of Ex-ULFA United Platform, Barak, at Silchar Sadar police station. A 35-year-old undertrial prisoner who had last week escaped from the premises of a court in south Mumbai, was Monday arrested in suburban Andheri, the police said. The accused Yogesh Darji had given police the slip after he was produced in the court on November 3 in connection with a cheating case registered against him in September last year, a police official said. Three policemen, who allegedly took away Rs 20 lakh in cash from an employee of a jewellery store under the pretext of checking the source of money, have been dismissed from service, a police official said here Monday. The three - two head constables and a constable - were suspended last year after they took the cash from the staff of the store and hid the cash in a bush, the police said. The accused, manning a checkpost here, had questioned the employee after intercepting a bus in which he was travelling and sought documents for the source of the money before taking it away, they said. The three were dismissed after a departmental inquiry, a police official here told PTI. The cash was recovered by the police.
The Delhi Police has seized over 3,500 kg of firecrackers from various parts of the city since October 23 and arrested 26 persons for storing them without license. The head of a cooperative sugar factory here allegedly committed suicide Monday afternoon by shooting himself with a revolver, police said. Pradip Nimbalkar, who was elected chairperson of Shri Chhatrapati Cooperative Sugar Factory on October 31, was declared dead on arrival after being rushed with a bullet injury from his residence in Sansar area of Indapur tehsil here to a hospital in Baramati, an official said. The official said that a suicide note, which was yet to be verified, had been found at the scene of incident. "The incident took place around 2.30 pm on Monday at his residence. Upon hearing a bullet shot, family members ran towards a first floor room in the house and found Nimbalkar in a pool of blood," the official said.
In what is suspected to be a macabre tantric ritual, the body of a three-year-old girl was found with her throat slit in a village in the district, the police said Monday. A woman allegedly practising witchcraft has been arrested, police said. Chinnappillai took the girl, who was playing in front of her house at Kurumpatti, into the forest and allegedly killed her believing that a child sacrifice would increase her tantric power, they said. She was produced before a court which remanded her in judicial custody. The child went missing on October 25 and her parents found her body with the throat slit, but the jewels intact, police sources said. Chinnappillai, on suspicion, was interrogated and she confessed to the crime, they added.
The CBI denied Monday reports that it has questioned Assam minister Himant Biswa Sarma in connection with its probe into the multi-crore Louis Berger bribery scam case. CBI Spokesperson R K Gaur dismissed reports that Sarma was questioned by the agency in connection with the case as reported by some news organisations. No such questioning has taken place as reported in a section of the media, Gaur said. In its order on September 1, 2017, the Gauhati High Court had asked the CBI to take over the probe, saying the state police's investigation was not satisfactory. It is alleged that US-based Louis Berger had adopted illegal means for obtaining three water supply projects in Goa and Guwahati. Unidentified officials of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, the US-based multinational company, Louis Berger International, and the Assam government have been booked on charges of criminal conspiracy and corruption, according to the CBI FIR.

Majuli (HQ) Additional Superintendent of Police Leena Doley has charged Additional Director General (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwal with sexual misconduct six years back. A married woman was reportedly disrobed, beaten and spat in her face by her maternal relatives in Rajasthan's Udaipur district when she demanded back the money which she had lent them, police said Monday. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The incident took place on October 11 when the woman went to her maternal uncle Kishan Lal to get back Rs 2 lakh. French investigators want to question Alexandre Djouhri over the alleged illegal financing of Nicolas Sarkozy's 2007 presidential election campaign by former Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi. Djouhri will face a four-day hearing at Westminster Magistrates Court in London from January 21 to 24. His lawyers sought to have his bail conditions eased but judge Vanessa Baraitser, hearing the case at the court, refused. Djouhri was excused attendance for the 40-minute case management hearing. The extradition hearing will be the next time that the case appears before the court. Dubai Police have recovered a diamond worth AED 300,000 (about 81,673 US dollars) just 20 hours after it was stolen by an Asian couple.The 3.27 carat gem was recovered after being stolen by the couple from a jewellery shop in Naif area.
