RBI duty-bound to disclose names of wilful defaulters: CIC Acharyulu

Central Information Commissioner (CIC) M Sridhar Acharyulu on Monday asserted that the Supreme Court has already rejected the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) objections against releasing the names of wilful defaulters, due to which the RBI is duty-bound to reply to the Right to Information (RTI) filed in this regard.The CIC's statement comes as the issue of show cause notice being served to RBI governor Urjit Patel for non-disclosure of wilful defaulters list has come to the fore.Sharing details of the RTI and the case that followed, CIC Acharyulu told ANI, "There was an RTI request for giving the list of names of wilful defaulters who defaulted on loans beyond Rs 50 crore. A similar request was filed earlier in which our earlier Information Commissioner has given an order that names of defaulters can be disclosed and there is nothing wrong about it. Andhra Pradesh will have separate High Court from Jan 1, says SC

Come New Year and the state of Andhra Pradesh will have a separate High Court as the Supreme Court has given the green signal for issuing the notification to this effect. It will be the 25th high court in the country and will initially function from a temporary structure till the permanent building comes up in the ambitious Justice City complex in the state's capital Amaravati. Since the bifurcation of the state on June 2, 2014, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have had a common High Court situated at Hyderabad, the latter's capital city. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said that since all the requirements have been fulfilled, there is no embargo for the competent authority to issue a notification bifurcating the courts into the High Court of Telangana and High Court of Andhra Pradesh respectively. Saudi sent 'cover-up team' to erase Khashoggi murder evidence

Two minor children drown while taking bath in a pond

Two minor children drowned in a pond while taking bath in Saankh village of Bihar's Begusarai district on Monday. The deceased have been identified as Nandan Kumar (12) and Saurav Kumar (11), Mufassil police station SHO Lal Mohan Singh said. Both the bodies were fished out from the pond after children raised an alarm, he said adding that Nandan died on the spot while Saurav died during the course of treatment at a private nursing home in Begusarai, he said. The incident occurred when both the children had gone to take bath in a pond in Saankh village under jurisdiction of Mufassil police station and slipped into deep waters and met their watery grave, the SHO said adding bodies have been sent to sadar hospital for post mortem. The sadar Circle Officer Utpal Kumar, who reached the spot after getting information, said that Rs 4 lakh each would be given to the next of the kins of the victims' families.

France seeks arrest of three Syrian officials over missing citizens

France has issued international arrest warrants for three senior Syrian intelligence officials in connection with the deaths of two Franco-Syrian nationals, legal sources said Monday. The warrants, which target National Security Bureau director Ali Mamluk and two others, were issued for "complicity in acts of torture", "complicity in crimes against humanity" and "complicity in war crimes". The warrants were issued on October 8, but made public only on Monday, according to the International Federation for Human Rights advocacy group (FIDH). The other high-ranking officials are Jamil Hassan, head of the Syrian air force's intelligence agency, and Abdel Salam Mahmoud, in charge of the air force intelligence's investigative branch at the Mezzeh military airport in Damascus. Maha: Man arrested for killing wife in Palghar

A man was arrested in neighbouring Palghar district for allegedly killing his wife over doubts about her character, police said Monday. Maylari Gouda (40), a resident of Nalasopara, suspected his wife Shalini (33) of having relationships with two men living in the same area and the couple used to have frequent quarrels over this issue, a Tulinj police station official said. Maha: 2 cops beat to death man for playing loud music, booked

Two police constables were booked for allegedly beating a tractor driver to death for playing loud music in Maharashtra's Solapur district, an official said Monday. According to the official, Pradip Kute (24) was driving his tractor to a sugar factory in Madha Sunday evening when he was stopped by constables Dashrath Kumbhar and Dipak Kshirsagar near Manegaon police post. They admonished Kute for playing loud music and beat him up, following which he fell unconscious, he said. Kute was rushed to a nearby hospital by the two constables but doctors declared him dead on arrival, he said. Madha police initially took a case of accidental death but Kute's kin, including his parents who rushed there from their native Bhum tehsil in Osmanabad district, protested in front of the police station. Schoolboy's death: Court denies bail to student

A sessions court here rejected on Monday the bail plea of a 16-year-old student, accused of killing a 7-year-old boy at a private school in Bhondsi here. Additional Sessions Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu declined relief to the accused saying that there was no ground at this stage to enlarge him on bail. During the hearing, the CBI opposed the bail plea of the accused and said there was enough evidence to substantiate the involvement of the 16-year-old boy in the murder which he has voluntary admitted during interrogation. Act against organisations without sexual harassment complaint redressal system: CIC to NCW

Citing the outpourings from victims of alleged sexual harassment in India's #MeToo movement, the CIC has asked the National Commission for Women to take action against organisations that do not have redressal systems for such complaints. Women who complain to the NCW, an organisation's internal complaints committee (ICC) or to the head of an organisation should be considered whistle blowers and given protection from harassment by authorities or their superiors, Information Commissioner Sridhar Acharyulu said. Taking note of actor Tanushree Dutta's accusations of sexual harassment, he also said there are no systems in various organisations like the film industry to receive complaints of sexual exploitation or harassment. MACT awards over Rs 28 lakh to wife and kids of man mowed down by truck

A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded over Rs 28 lakh to the wife and three children of a man who was run over by a truck in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh more than two years ago. MACT Presiding Officer Pawan Kumar Jain asked Oriental Insurance Company Limited, insurer of the offending vehicle, to pay a total of Rs 28,34,748, including interest, to the family of Satyendra within 30 days from November 1, the date of the order. "Since the offending vehicle was insured with respondent No. 2 (Oriental Insurance Company Ltd.), it is directed to deposit the award amount of Rs 23,54,000 with interest at 9 per cent per annum from the date of filing of claim petition till realisation of the amount, within 30 days," the tribunal said. Arvind Kejriwal acquitted in defamation case by Sheila Dikshit's former aide

A Delhi court on Monday acquitted Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a criminal defamation case filed by a former aide of Congress leader Sheila Dikshit, saying that the complainant cannot be said to be an "aggrieved person". Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted relief to Kejiriwal in the case lodged by Pawan Khera, the political secretary of Dikshit when she was the chief minister, for remarks allegedly made against her by the AAP leader in a television show during power tariff hike protests in October 2012 . Bangladesh tribunal sentences 2 to death for 1971 war crimes

A special Bangladesh tribunal on Monday handed down death sentences to two persons, including a former leader of the ruling Awami League, for crimes against humanity during the 1971 liberation war and for aiding Pakistani troops. "They will be hanged by neck until they are dead," pronounced the chair of the three-judge International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh (ICT-BD) Mohammad Shahinur Islam after the trial of both convicts who are on the run. Asian couple steals diamond in Dubai, held in India

An Asian couple who stole a diamond worth 300,000 dirhams (about USD 81,000) from a shop in Dubai and fled the UAE was arrested dramatically from an Indian airport and brought back to the country, a media report said Monday. The couple managed to smuggle the 3.27-carat diamond after the woman swallowed it. The suspects, who are in their 40s, were arrested as they were transiting to Hong Kong via Mumbai. Sudan national held for smuggling gold from Sharjah

Smuggled gold bars worth nearly Rs 25 lakhs were seized from a Sudan national who was arrested after he arrived at the airport here from Sharjah, DRI said Monday. Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials (DRI) received inputs that Hafez Ahmed Ishag Musa(38) attempted to smuggle the yellow metal which was concealed in the space for batteries in two mobile phones. The sleuths intercepted him on November three and recovered the foreign origin gold in the form of five tola bars of 24 carat purity totally weighing 761.200 grams and valued at about Rs 25 lakh, a DRI release said. His wife Safia Dandarawi Mohamed Abbas was accompanying him, it said. The passenger was arrested and enlarged on bail, it added. Further investigation in the case was in progress.

Rose Valley ponzi case: ED arrests Kolkata-based man

The Enforcement Directorate has arrested a Kolkata-based businessman in connection with its money laundering probe into the Rose Valley ponzi scam case, officials said Monday. Sudipto Roy Choudhary (44) was arrested by the agency from West Bengal capital Kolkata on Sunday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), they said. The officials said a Kolkata court on Monday sent Choudhary to judicial custody till November 12. They said Choudhary, who ran a consultancy business, is a suspect in connection with a number of payments made in the chit fund scam case and payments worth crores made to him are under the ED's scanner. Rajasthan: 3 members of family killed as fire breaks out in house

Three members, including two minors, of a family were charred to death and one other person was injured in a fire that gutted their house, police said Monday. The incident occurred on late Sunday night in Jhujhu village, they said. The deceased were identified as 60-year-old Rukma Devi, Rekha (3) and Bhagwati (6), Station House Officer (SHO) of the Sri Kolayat police station Jagdish Singh said. Sahi Ram, the landlord, sustained severe injuries while attempting to douse the flames, the SHO said, adding that he was taken to PBM Hospital here.
