A 32-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here Thursday for repeatedly raping his six-year-old daughter. Special Judge for the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) cases, R P Soni, convicted the man for rape under the IPC and POCSO. The accused (name not disclosed) hailed from Katni district, said Additional District Public Prosecutor Smritilata Barkade. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him, Barkade said, out of which Rs 8,000 will be given to the victim as compensation. According to the prosecution, the victim's mother suffered paralysis some years ago. Since then, she, alongwith her three children, lived with her elder sister in Jabalpur. Two young unemployed engineers were found hanging at different places in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh district, the police said Thursday. The body of mining engineer Pramod Kumar (24) was found hanging from a branch of tree in Padma area of the district on Wednesday, they said. According to the complaint filed by Kumars father, Binod Ram, Kumar was missing from his residence at Deochanda village for the last five days. The police said that Kumar did a course in mining engineering at Dhanbad about two years ago. The second body that of Shivam Kumar, a civil engineer aged 25 years, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his house at Dipugarah area under the jurisdiction of Korrah police station of the district on October 23, the police said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Thursday registered a case against three officials, including a senior manager, of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Koraput, on the charge of misappropriation of public money, the agency said in a statement here. The case was registered under various sections of the IPC, including 120(B), 409, 420, 467, 468 and 471, and section 13(1)(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) on a complaint from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited against a senior manager (Finance), Engine Division, Koraput, Odisha, an assistant (Finance/Accounts) and a job contract labourer officer, Finance Department, and five other private persons, it said. Two persons, including a 40-year-old woman, were arrested at the city airport and gold worth Rs 1.96 crore was recovered from them, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said Thursday. DRI sources said based on a tip-off, the woman and a 38-year-old man accompanying her were arrested as soon as their Mumbai-Indore Air India flight (AI 635) landed at Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport here on Wednesday morning. The duo had hidden around six kg gold worth Rs 1.96 crore in their handbags, DRI sources said adding that they had apparently boarded the flight on fake documents. The DRI suspects that the precious metal might have been smuggled into India from abroad. Further investigation into the case is on, they said.
A former top counter-terrorism official in Sri Lanka was arrested on Thursday in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate several VIPs, including President Maithripala Sirisena, a police spokesman said. Nalaka de Silva, the former DIG of the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID), was arrested by the CID, police spokesman S P Ruwan Gunasekara said. The arrest was made during his interrogation by the CID which had questioned him on five separate days over the alleged plot to kill President Sirisena and former defence minister Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. A man named Namal Kumara in mid September disclosed the alleged plot implicating Silva. Kumara has claimed that Silva had discussed the plot with him over phone targeting Sirisena and Rajapaksa. Two elderly women were found dead at their residence in Outer Delhi's Paschim Vihar area, police said Thursday. The victims, who were sisters, were in their 70s, they said. Police received a call between 4 to 5 pm on Thursday that two women were found dead in their house, police said. "Prima facie it seems like one was bludgeoned as she has injuries on her head and the second one was strangled. There is no evidence of forcible entry and it seems like the alleged accused would be known to the victims," said Seju Kuruvilla, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer). The deceased sisters were unmarried and use to live together at Paschim Vihar. Their relatives, who live in Faridabad and Uttar Pradesh, were informed, Kuruvilla added. An eight-year-old student of a madrasa died after he sustained a head injury following a scuffle between two groups of minor boys in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar Thursday, police said. The incident occurred in the morning when the students objected to playing by a few local boys on a vacant land in front of the madrasa, they said. The local boys insisted on playing since they claimed there was no other vacant place nearby. A scuffle broke in which the student sustained an internal injury on his head, said Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South). He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, he added. The boy was a native of Mewat in Haryana and his parents have been informed, Kumar said. Five police personnel of the Puranpur Kotwali were Thursday suspended over allegations that a woman died during a police raid, officials said. Taking strong note of the allegation, Superintendent of Police Balendu Bhushan Singh put SSI Udayvir Singh and constables Shakeel Ahmed, Mohit Kundu, Harendra and Shivam under suspension, and directed that an FIR be lodged against them, they said. Justice AD Jagadish Chandira reserved the order following conclusion of arguments. A CBI court had in August framed charges and ordered trial of former Union Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran and others in the case of alleged setting up of "illegal" telephone exchanges to benefit the Sun TV Network of his elder brother Kalanithi Maran during 2004-06. The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund (JNMF) has been asked by authorities to vacate its premises at the Teen Murti Bhavan within 15 days, sources said Thursday. The development comes after a quasi-judicial body of the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry gave a hearing to the JNMF to present its stand in connection with the alleged illegal possession of the Teen Murti Bhavan premises. "The quasi-judical body has issued a final notice to the JNMF to vacate its premises at the Teen Murti Bhavan within 15 days," a source said. A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trying to rob a cash van in Central Delhi's Patel Nagar area, police said Thursday. Jatin Verma, a resident of Sector 5, Rohini, began involved in criminal activities after his plans to become a top wrestler did not materialise, they said. "On October 15, police received a call regarding an attempted robbery of a cash van at the West Patel Nagar area," said Mandeep S Randhawa, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).
