The CBI has taken over investigation into the Tihar Jail violence last year where 18 inmates were allegedly beaten up by the prison staff, officials said Tuesday. The agency has registered two FIRs in this regard on the orders of the Delhi High Court, which had ordered it to take over the probe, they said. The court had ordered the probe on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Chinmay Kanojia, who has alleged that his client Shahid Husuf, who was being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), was beaten up without any reason by the jail staff. The alleged attack on inmates lodged in a high-risk ward in jail number 1 of the central jail on the night of November 21 last year was termed as "very disturbing" by the high court. The plea has said a particular community, including Husuf, were being targeted by the jail staff causing serious injuries to him and others. Self-styled Godman Rampal has been sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with two murder cases.The lawyer for Rampal said he will move the High Court against the verdict."We will appeal in the High Court. These people were in fact trying to save the people who have lost their lives. They have been given life imprisonment under Section 302, life imprisonment under Section 120, two years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5000 under Section 343," said Rampal's lawyer AP Singh.The Court on Thursday, had held Rampal and 28 other people, guilty in two murder cases, which were filed in 2014.The self-styled godman was arrested in November 2014 after two murder cases were registered against him.The first case was filed after a woman's body was found in his ashram at Hisar's Barwal town on November 18.The second case was registered after bodies of a child and four women were found in the same ashram on the following day.
Self-styled godman Daati Maharaj has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Delhi High Court order of transferring the rape case against him to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).Daati Maharaj's contentions are that he was not a party in the case in which the High Court had passed the order and that he was not heard before passing the order to transfer the case.The top court will hear his plea on October 22.On October 3, the High Court had allowed the complainant's plea which sought transfer of the matter to the CBI, while saying that the manner in which Delhi Police carried out the probe "casts a shadow on the investigation".Previously, the probe was being helmed by the Delhi Police Crime Branch.The High Court order had come on two pleas, one by the complainant and another Public Interest Litigation (PIL), seeking CBI to take over the probe.The High Court had pulled up the police for not arresting Daati Maharaj, saying that action was not taken even after recording of ...
The apex consumer commission has asked Hitachi India's Delhi franchise to pay more than Rs 5 lakh to a travel company for installing faulty air-conditioners at its premises. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) has asked the Delhi branch of Amtrex Hitachi Appliance Ltd (now Johnson Controls-Hitachi Air Conditioning India Limited) to pay Rs 5,40,000 to Stic Travels Private Ltd within 45 days. It set aside the Delhi state commission's order which asked the multinational air conditioning manufacturer to pay Rs 10 lakh to the tour operator. "The complainant (Stic) is definitely entitled to get the payment of this amount as compensation, as even after installation of additional air-conditioners, the situation did not improve," presiding member Prem Narain said. Since Hitachi has admitted that they offered many solutions to improve cooling, including the provision of additional split air-conditioners, it showed that there was some less cooling and the company itself .
The son of a BSP leader was booked for allegedly brandishing a weapon in the foyer of a five-star hotel here, a video of which went viral on social media, police said Tuesday. A complaint about the incident was received by the police Monday from the assistant security manager of Hyatt Regency Hotel in RK Puram, they said. The incident occurred on the intervening night of October 13 and 14, they added. In the video, Ashish Pandey, who is the son of BSP leader Rakesh Pandey, can purportedly be seen brandishing a gun in the foyer of the hotel, a senior police officer said. A case was registered against Pandey under the Arms Act, the police said, adding that further investigation was underway.

The body of a 23-year-old man was found in Shamli district's Babri village following which two people were booked in connection with his death, police said Tuesday. Saddam went missing a day prior and his body was found in a jungle in the village Monday morning, they said. A case was registered against the two accused who were absconding. A junior doctor at the King George's Medical University (KGMU), who was being probed in connection with the Vyapam scam, died after she allegedly injected herself with an overdose of an anesthesia drug.The woman, identified as Dr. Manisha Sharma, died over two days after she was admitted to the hospital in critical condition on account of an alleged drug overdose.In the wake of Sharma's death, the deceased's kin lodged an FIR in the Wazirganj police station against a senior doctor in the Urology department, Udham Singh, on grounds of harassment."On October 13, a woman informed us that her sister, who is a doctor at KGMU, injected herself with some drug and was being treated at KGMU where she died today (Monday). An FIR has been registered against a doctor. Action will be taken based on the investigation," said Lucknow West Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikas Chandra Tripathi.As per a doctor at KGMU, Sharma was pursuing higher education at the hospital while serving as a junior doctor.
A Delhi court on Monday granted bail to industrialist and Congress leader Naveen Jindal and 13 others, accused of money laundering in a case pertaining to alleged irregularities in allocation of a Jharkhand-based coal block. The court, however, put various conditions on the accused, including that they will not leave the country without its prior permission and not influence the witnesses or hamper the probe. Special Judge Bharat Parashar granted the relief to Jindal and others on a personal bond of Rs one lakh and one surety of the like amount after they appeared in court in pursuance to the summons issued to them on August 14. During the hearing, Enforcement Directorate's special public prosecutors -- senior advocate R S Cheema and advocate N K Matta -- opposed the bail application, saying the relief may hamper the investigation. Delhi High Court on Monday directed the Director-General Prison of Tihar and Secretary of the Public Works Department to conduct a meeting and finalise the timeline for procuring and installing CCTV cameras in Tihar Jail.A bench comprising Justices S. Muralidhar and Vinod Goel issued directions to the jail authority and concerned departments to frame a timeline for installing 5600 cameras in Tihar and other jails.The Court also directed the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB) to bring out a notification for filling up vacancies in Tihar Jail while also directing the state counsel to fill up the posts of the Counselor in the jail.These directives were issued by the high court while hearing a plea filed by H.S. Three men, including the part-time driver of the complainant, were arrested for allegedly robbing him at gunpoint in the Jagatpuri area here, police said Monday. The arrested accused were identified as Indal (29) and Ravinder (28) from Geeta Colony and Naveen Kasana, a resident of Jawli, Uttar Pradesh. According to complainant Umesh Bansal, he was allegedly robbed by two motorcycle-borne men of Rs 2.7 lakh at gunpoint at Jagatpuri. During the robbery, the miscreants had also opened fire at Bansal's servant, Ramsewak, who was accompanying him on his scooty, said Pankaj Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East). A suspected drug supplier carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 was arrested for allegedly supplying heroin to dealers in UP and Delhi-NCR, police said Monday. The accused identified as Sarvan Yadav was arrested in connection with a case wherein he had supplied heroin worth Rs 20 crore in the international market to his dealer, they said. "Acting on a tip off, a trap was laid near New Delhi Railway Station on October 12 where Yadav had come to board the train for Jharkhand. Subsequently, the accused was arrested," Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), said. During interrogation, Yadav disclosed that he was involved in drug trafficking for the last four to five years and had supplied more than 50 kg heroin to various dealers. Yadav used to procure heroin from Manipur, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand; and supply them to his drug dealers based in UP and Delhi-NCR, police added.

The body of an unidentified woman was found in a bag in suburban Malad Monday afternoon, police said. The woman seemed to be 20 to 25 years old, they said. The body was found stuffed in a travelling bag left at Mindspace, a commercial hub, in Malad (West). Police sent the body for autopsy. The Uttar Pradesh police Monday yet again gave a clean chit to former chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav in connection with allegedly threatening IPS officer Amitabh Thakur over phone three years ago. Submitting the final report (FR) before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Anand Prakash Singh, the state police said proceedings should be initiated against Thakur under CrPC Section 182 for lodging a "false" FIR against Mulayam Yadav. The judge fixed November 15 for passing the order on the final report. Turkish police and other officials on Monday entered Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul to search the premises in the investigation over missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Uniformed Turkish police and other officials in suits believed to be prosecutors went inside the consulate after receiving agreement from Riyadh to conduct the search. Khashoggi has not been seen since entering the consulate on October 2.
