: A couple allegedly killed their nine-year-old mentally challenged daughter by feeding her food laced with poison at nearby Vahaikulam, police said Saturday. The child fainted after eating the food. The couple, both engineers, informed neighbours that she had collapsed and took her to the government hospital here on October 4 with their help. Doctors there administered first aid and then sent the child to the government hospital here, where she died without responding to treatment, police said. The mother left the hospital soon after her daughter was admitted, they said. The father was arrested, based on investigation and a search was to nab the woman, police said.
A 45-year-old technical adviser from Gurugram in Haryana and posted at a fertilisers plant in Kota district died after allegedly falling from a height of nearly 150 feet while on duty, police said. The incident took place Friday when Pankaj Bhardwaj, posted at the Chambal Fertilizers and Chemical Limited (CFSL) at Gadepan here, allegedly fell from the height while working at the plant, they said. Bhardwaj was a resident of Gurugram in Haryana and was posted as a technical advisor, Similiya police station SHO Ravish Sameriya said. He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, Sameriya said. Bhardwaj was living alone in Kota while his family was in Gurugram. His family members arrived here Saturday after which the postmortem was conducted and the body handed over to them, Sameriya said. On the basis of a complaint by the family members, a case under CrPC Section 174 (unnatural death) was registered, he said, adding that the matter is being probed.
Police Saturday arrested two highway robbers and seized stolen mobile phones, cash and sharp weapons from their possession in Jajpur district. A police officer said the two robbers were arrested from Kantigadia village late Friday night. The duo had recently assaulted a truck driver and looted money, mobile phone from him after intercepting his truck on the Paradeep-Daitary national higway on September 30, the officer said. "By using the stolen mobile phone's IMEI number, we started tracking the device and were gathering information about the looters. During tracking we came to know their location at Kantigadia village and arrested them," said Umakanta Nayak, inspector-in-charge of Dharmasala police station. Three alleged drug peddlers were arrested Saturday after recovery of poppy straw and heroin from them in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Truck driver Hardeep Singh and his associate Rakesh Kumar, both residents of Punjab, were arrested after police recovered three kilograms of poppy straw from their vehicle at Balole near Bari Brahmana along the Jammu-Pathankot highway, a police spokesman said. He said the truck was intercepted on way to Punjab at a police check point after which the contraband was recovered. Another accused, Sourav Sharma, a resident of Ghagwal village of Samba, was arrested during frisking at Sandhi Morh, the spokesman said, adding 5.5 grams of heroin and seven grams of charas (a form of cannabis) were recovered from his possession. A 21-year-old man was arrested here for allegedly circulating an "offensive" video on the social media, purportedly showing a Hindu deity along with a menstruating woman's image, police said Saturday. The video created by Selvan, a resident of Tiruninravur here, showed Lord Ayyappa allegedly in a bad light with a menstruating woman's image forming part of the clip. On seeing it on the social media, a Hindu Makkal Katchi functionary lodged a police complaint, following which Selvan was arrested. "After questioning, we arrested him. He was produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody," a local police official told PTI. While traditionally the entry of women of menstruating age was barred into the Sabarimala temple, the Supreme Court has, in a recent judgment, paved the way for the entry of women of all age groups into the hill shrine at Kerala. One person was killed and six others were injured in a clash between two groups over a property dispute in Mehjooda village under the Suryava police station here, police said on Saturday. The incident took place Friday night, when the two groups, armed with lathis, clashed with each other, leaving Rama Chaudhan alias Ramae (58) dead and his wife and two sons injured, Circle Officer (CO) Abhishek Pandey said. Three members of the group that assaulted Chaudhan were also injured in the incident, he said, adding that they were admitted to the district hospital, where the condition of two of them was stated to be serious. An FIR was lodged against six persons, of whom one was arrested, Pandey said. Additional police personnel were deployed in the village as a precautionary measure, the CO added.

Four persons, including two policemen and a revenue inspector, were arrested by officers of anti-graft vigilance wing for allegedly accepting bribes, a vigilance statement said Saturday. In the first case, a sub-inspector of police and another policeman were arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a man in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, the statement said, adding, the policemen were accepting the bribe in order to release the man's motorcycle which was detained during a routine check. Sub-Inspector Ghanashyam Mallick, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sarat police station and Dambarudhar Murmu, another policeman were arrested after they were caught red-handed while accepting the bribe on Friday, the statement said. In a major security lapse, some unidentified persons stole some lamps and taps worth about Rs 70,000 from the high-security residence of the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Pakistan, a media report said Saturday. An official of the Sri Lanka's High Commission here filed a complaint with the police, stating that thieves have stolen brass lamps and bathroom taps from the high commissioner's residence, The Express Tribune reported. The value of the stolen lamps and bathroom fittings is estimated to be Rs 70,000, it said. Although the value of the stolen goods was not high, the fact that intruders managed to enter and exit the residence of an envoy was shocking to the security officials who have launched an investigation to nab the culprits, the report added.
A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two teenage boys here in Maharashtra, police said on Saturday. The accused, both aged 17 and studying in a local school, were detained, they said. The incident took place near a village in the tribal-dominated Mokhada taluka on Friday when the girl was returning home after visiting a bank, Sub-Inspector of Jawhar police station Rakesh Pagare said. The two boys, who were on a motorcycle, stopped the girl and asked her where she was going. They then dragged her to nearby bushes and allegedly raped her, police said. The girl told her parents about the horrifying incident, after which a complaint was filed with the police. The accused have been detained late on Friday evening, they said. A Kerala court Saturday extended the judicial custody of Roman Catholic Bishop Franco Mulakkal, arrested over allegations of repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting a nun, by 14 days. The magistrate's court in Pala in Kottayam district remanded the bishop to judicial custody till October 20. The body of a woman, in her 40s, was found Saturday near a vacant house in Shahdara's Vivek Vihar area, police said. Police received information about the body at 9.25 am and a team was sent to the spot. They found the body behind a vacant house, a senior police officer said.
