Thousands rally in Europe opposing antisemitism and support to Israel

Thousands of people were rallying in Berlin and London on Sunday to oppose antisemitism and support Israel, while demonstrations in support of Palestinians in besieged Gaza continued around the world. Some of those who gathered in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate carried Israeli flags or posters with photos of some of the more than 200 people seized by Hamas as hostages during the militants' deadly October 7 incursion into Israel. It is unbearable that Jews are living in fear again today in our country of all places, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier told the crowd. Every single attack on Jews, on Jewish institutions is a disgrace for Germany. Every single attack fills me with shame and anger. Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz inaugurated a new synagogue in the eastern city of Dessau and said he was outraged by the upsurge in antisemitism since the conflict began. Several buildings in Berlin where Jews live had the star of David painted on doors and walls, and assailants th

Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinians march in London as war roils world

Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched in London and other cities on Saturday to demand Israel stop its bombardment of Gaza, as the Israel-Hamas war entered its third week and its ripples spread around the globe. On the day a trickle of aid entered Gaza, where more than 1 million people have left their homes because of the conflict, protesters gathered in the rain at Marble Arch near London's Hyde Park before marching to the government district, Whitehall. Police estimated the crowd winding its way through central London at up to 100,000. Waving Palestinian flags, participants called for an end to Israel's blockade and airstrikes launched in the wake of a brutal incursion into southern Israel by the Hamas militant group that controls Gaza. The war has raised tensions around the world, with both Jewish and Muslim communities feeling under threat. British authorities have urged demonstrators to be mindful of the pain and anxiety felt by the Jewish community. Lond

Pro-Khalistan groups stage protest at High Commission of India in London

A group of pro-Khalistan protesters on Monday gathered outside the High Commission of India here, waving anti-India placards and chanting slogans amid strong Scotland Yard presence. The protest, which was promoted by British Sikh groups on social media, was organised to draw attention to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations last month of alleged Indian involvement in the killing of wanted terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. The allegation has been strongly rejected by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as "absurd and motivated". "Sikhs will raise domestic issues including the suspicious death of activist Bhai Avtar Singh Khanda, reads the call for Monday's protest. There were several uniformed Metropolitan Police officers on guard and patrolling on foot outside India House, which was cordoned off to restrict the small group of turbaned men and some women opposite the building outside Waldorf Hotel at Aldwych in central London. Several police vehicles also

Taking measures for security of Indian mission in London: UK minister

The United Kingdom is taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the Indian High Commission in London and its staff members, British Security Minister Tom Tugendhat said, around five months after the mission was attacked by pro-Khalistani forces that put the bilateral ties under some strain. In an exclusive interview to PTI, the senior minister said the British government is addressing India's concerns over activities of pro-Khalistani elements and that any attempt to radicalise people in the UK will be dealt with by the law-enforcing authorities. "Let me be very clear about this. This is not an Indian problem in the UK. Whenever there is radicalisation in the UK of UK citizens, this is a British problem. And so any attempt to radicalise any UK citizen in any direction will be dealt with by the British government," he said. "That is why we have the Prevent Programme and we are using it to face those challenges of radicalisation across different communities," he .

'Oppenheimer' cast leaves London premiere midway to join writer strike

The A-list cast of filmmaker Christopher Nolan's new movie "Oppenheimer" left the film's London screening midway in solidarity with the strike called by a Hollywood's actors union. On Thursday, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (SAG-AFTRA) voted to join screenwriters in the first joint strike after failing to reach a consensus for a new contract with the studios and streaming services, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The London premiere of "Oppenheimer", Nolan's sprawling epic about J Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist remembered as one of the fathers of the atom bomb, saw lead stars Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Ramy Malek grace the red carpet. But they left before the screening of the movie in preparation for the imminent strike, the filmmaker announced later. "You've seen them here earlier on the red carpet. Unfortunately, they're off to write their .

India should go for more liberalisation of services, says London official

Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for liberalising financial services, the policy chairman of the City of London Corporation, Christopher Hayward, on Wednesday said that the Indian government should go for more liberalisation of such services. According to Hayward, even if the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United Kingdom and India does not fall through, there are ample opportunities for both the countries. "We see India as probably the fastest growing country in the world. Everybody wants to do business with India. The projections for the next ten years are huge as well. We see today some liberalisation of financial services and legal services, coming from PM Modi, which we welcome. We would encourage further liberalisation, more opportunity," said Hayward. "FTA is being negotiated between the UK and India. We are very pleased that it has a financial services chapter in it. Though we don't know what the agreement is, both the countries should continue negotiations. It .

Wimbledon: Champagne problems at SW19, fans to cork it when players serve

Where and when to pop your Champagne is such a Wimbledon problem. Someone got the timing wrong Sunday at the oldest Grand Slam tournament, where the bubbly helps wash down the strawberries and cream. "Ladies and gentlemen, please, if you are opening a bottle of Champagne don't do it as the player is about to serve. Thank you," Australian umpire John Blom announced just after the start of a match on No. 3 Court. Anastasia Potapova smiled and nodded in approval. The 22nd-seeded player was serving to start her third-round match against teenager Mirra Andreeva. When she tossed the ball in the air a cork popped and she sent the serve long. She then lost the point on her second serve, and the umpire's warning followed. Lanson Champagne is available on the grounds of the All England Club by the glass, half-bottle and bottle. "Le White Label Sec" goes for 95.10 pounds ($122) for a bottle. "Usually, actually, we buy it here, but it's quite nice that you can actually bring your own in, whic
