Oppn alliance to hold 1st meet, discuss strategy for Parl's monsoon session

The first meeting of opposition alliance INDIA will be held on Thursday to chalk out a joint strategy for the monsoon session of Parliament. Sources said the meeting will be held in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge. "The meeting has been called to discuss the issues to be taken up in Parliament from day one of the monsoon session," an opposition party leader. Govt calls all-party meeting ahead of monsoon session of Parliament

The government has convened an all-party meeting on Wednesday to deliberate on a host of issues related to Parliament's monsoon session, which will begin from July 20. It's a customary get-together on the eve of a session's start as various parties put across their issues at the meeting attended by senior government ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also participated in many such meetings. A similar all-party meeting called on Tuesday by Rajya Sabha Chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar has been deferred due to non-availability of leaders of many parties. While opposition parties are holding a meeting in Bengaluru, the ruling National Democratic Alliance is meeting in the national capital. Govt lists Bills on Delhi ordinance, data protection for Monsoon Session

The government on Thursday listed bills on personal data protection, to amend forest conservation laws and on the contentious ordinance on Delhi services for the Monsoon Session of Parliament beginning next week. A bulletin issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat listed 21 bills for the Monsoon Session, including a draft legislation to check film piracy, introduce age-based categories for censor certification and to set up the National Research Foundation. Also listed for consideration and passage during the session were the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (Amendment) Bill, among others. The Monsoon Session of Parliament begins on July 20 and will continue till August 11.

Clarificatory amendment to GST Act on online gaming in monsoon session

Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra on Thursday said the central government will bring clarificatory amendments to the GST Act in the monsoon session of Parliament to implement GST Council's decision of imposing 28 per cent tax on online gaming, casino and horse racing. The monsoon session will begin on July 20 and end on August 11, 2023. "It will be our effort to draft the law and introduce it in Parliament and get it passed in the monsoon session," he told PTI in an interview. The implementation takes effect only when state legislatures have also passed amendments in state GST laws, he said, adding, that it will take some time. "This is a clarificatory amendment. The monsoon session is likely to commence in the third week of July, with sittings beginning in the old Parliament building and moving to the new building midway, Parliamentary sources said on Wednesday. The government is planning to introduce bills to amend the companies and insolvency laws during the monsoon session of Parliament, a senior official said on Thursday. The session is likely to commence in late July or August. The corporate affairs ministry is implementing the Companies Act and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC).
