Passion over profit drives Zepto's $5 bn success, says founder Palicha

A passion for building a transformative company, rather than a mere pursuit of wealth, is what drove the success for Zepto-- the company with a market valuation of USD 5 billion, co-founder and CEO Aadit Palicha said on Monday. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, the 22-year-old entrepreneur said that despite working 80-100 hours a week, the Zepto team is fuelled by excitement about the platform they are building, not financial gain. "We love what we're building, we work like crazy, we just are genuinely so excited about what we're building. It's not really about money or personal wealth, because candidly, working 80-100 hours a week, we could have probably worked half of that with a lot less stress... "At a certain point, money becomes inconsequential," Palicha, who is a Stanford University dropout, said. He pointed out that while many global internet companies have scaled to valuations in tens of billions, India is yet to see similar outcomes. Highlighting the stark contrast betw

CBI files closure report in NDTV promoters cheating case after 7 yrs probe

The CBI on Tuesday filed a closure report in a case of alleged cheating against former NDTV promoters and directors Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy as it could not find legally tenable evidence in the Rs 48 crore loss incurred by ICICI Bank in the settlement of a loan in 2009, officials said. The case was initiated in 2017 when the CBI registered an FIR based on a complaint from an individual, Sanjay Dutt, of Quantum Securities Ltd who alleged that RRPR Holdings Pvt Ltd, associated with the Roys, had taken a Rs 500 crore loan from India Bulls Pvt Limited to acquire a 20 per cent stake in NDTV through a public open offer. According to the FIR, RRPR Holdings also took out a Rs 375 crore loan (with Rs 350 crore disbursed) from ICICI Bank at an interest rate of 19 per cent per annum to repay the loan from India Bulls. The complaint alleged that the Roys pledged their entire shareholding as collateral for this loan, failing to report the pledging to the Securities and Exchange Board of India

SC junks plea challenging order to consider NDTV's application under FEMA

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea by the ED challenging a Bombay High Court order, which directed the RBI to consider the compounding applications filed by NDTV in a case of alleged FEMA violation. A bench of Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Augustine George Masih said no case for interference was made out. The high court, in its 2018 order, set aside objections raised to the compounding proceedings by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had earlier flagged the alleged Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations and issued showcause notices to NDTV. In November 2015, the ED issued showcause notices to the news organisation for allegedly flouting foreign exchange regulations while availing of overseas and foreign direct investment facilities to the tune of more than Rs 2,000 crore. In March 2016, NDTV filed an application with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for compounding of the contraventions alleged in the showcause notices. However, a year later, the RBI to
