Two arrested after Twitter posts threat to 'shoot up a synagogue'

Two men who were arrested at New York's Penn Station after authorities spotted social media posts about attacking a synagogue represented a real danger to the city's Jewish community, Mayor Eric Adams said Monday. This was not an idle threat," Adams said at a news conference where he was joined by officials from the FBI, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and other agencies involved in the arrests early Saturday of Christopher Brown, 21, and Matthew Mahrer, 22, on charges including criminal possession of a weapon. This was a real threat, he said. According to the criminal complaint against him, Brown made a series of threats on Twitter including, on Thursday, Gonna ask a Priest if I should become a husband or shoot up a synagogue and die," and then on Friday, "This time I'm really gonna do it. Authorities linked the tweets to Brown, of Aquebogue, on Long Island, and identified Mahrer, of Manhattan, as an associate, said Michael Driscoll, head of the FBI's New York office. A

Massive snowfall in New York due to lake-effect storm near Lake Erie

Piles of snow, in some places taller than most people, buried parts of western and northern New York as a lake-effect storm pounded areas east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario for a third straight day Saturday, with possibly even more to come. Snowfall totals as high as 77 inches (196 cm) were reported in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, home to the NFL's Buffalo Bills. Partway across the state, the town of Natural Bridge, near the Fort Drum Army base, reported just under 6 feet (1.8 metres). The snowfall in some spots ranked among the highest ever recorded in the area, rivalling the eye-popping amounts that fell during similar storms in 2014 and 1945. The snowfall totals, which began accumulating Thursday night in some spots, would be on the order of historic not only for any time of year but for any part of the country, said National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira, at NWS headquarters in College Park, Maryland. The lake-effect storm, caused by cold air picking up ...

Diwali to be public school holiday in New York City starting 2023

Diwali will be a public school holiday in New York City starting 2023 with Mayor Eric Adams saying this sends a message about the significance of the city's inclusiveness and the long overdue step will encourage children to learn about the festival of lights. Adams, joined by New York Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar and New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks, said on Thursday that in his conversations during the campaign trail, he learned so much about Diwali and what the festival of lights means. He said through declaring Diwali a holiday in New York City public schools, We wanted to send a loud and clear message to the countless number of people who acknowledge this period of time of celebration. At the same time, this is an educational moment because when we acknowledge Diwali, we are going to encourage children to learn about Diwali. We're going to have them start talking about what it is to celebrate the festival of lights, and how to turn the light on within yourself, h

Trump, adult children sued by New York attorney general for fraud

New York's attorney general sued former President Donald Trump and his company on Wednesday, alleging business fraud involving some of their most prized assets, including properties in Manhattan, Chicago and Washington, DC. Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit, filed in state court in New York, is the culmination of the Democrat's three-year civil investigation of Trump and the Trump Organisation. Trump's three eldest children, Donald Jr, Ivanka and Eric Trump, were also named as defendants, along with two longtime company executives, Allen Weisselberg and Jeffrey McConney. The lawsuit seeks to strike at the core of what made Trump famous, taking a blacklight to the image of wealth and opulence he's embraced throughout his career first as a real estate developer, then as a reality TV host on The Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice, and later as president. James, a Democrat, was to announce details of the lawsuit at a news conference on Wednesday. The case showed up on a court ..

Trump rape accuser plans suit under new New York 'survivors' law

A writer who accused former President Donald Trump of raping her in a department store dressing room intends to file another lawsuit against him under a new New York law letting sexual assault victims sue over attacks that happened decades ago. A lawyer for the columnist, E. Jean Carroll, notified a federal judge of her intent to sue in an August letter entered in the public record Tuesday. The suit would allege sexual battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. In the letter, the lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, also said she plans to depose Trump in the defamation case that Carroll already had pending against the former president. The deposition would have to occur by October 19, when discovery in the case must be completed for a planned February trial. Trump's attorney, Alina Habba, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In an August 11 letter to the court that was also posted in the public file Tuesday, she objected to the new lawsuit. Habba wrote that letti

World leaders meet this week at UN General Assembly: All you need to know

After two years of virtual and hybrid summits, the world's leaders will reconvene on the river's edge in New York this coming week at the UN General Assembly, an exercise in multilateralism born from the hope for lasting peace that followed World War II. The opening of the 77th session comes as the planet is beset with crises on nearly every front. Russia's war in Ukraine, inflation and economic instability, terrorism and ideological extremism, environmental degradation and devastating floods, droughts and fires and the ongoing pandemic are just a few of the rampant perils. The high-level meeting opens Monday with a summit on education, whose thorough disruption during the coronavirus pandemic will reverberate for decades to come. Speeches from the scores of attending leaders begin Tuesday and run through Monday, Sept. 26. While this year is billed as something of a return to the way things were, certain concessions to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic have been made. In addition to
