Wrestler Antim Panghal to be deported from Paris for disciplinary breach

In a major embarrassment for the country, Antim Panghal and her entire entourage is being deported from Paris for a major disciplinary breach where the young wrestler handed her official accreditation card to her sister who was caught by security while leaving the Games Village. Panghal had crashed out of the Paris Olympics after losing her opening bout in the women's 53kg during the day. "The Indian Olympic Association has decided to fly wrestler Antim and her support staff back after a disciplinary breach was brought to IOA's notice by the French authorities," an IOA statement said. While IOA did not share what the disciplinary breach was, a source shared the details with PTI. "Instead of heading to the Games Village, she reached the hotel where her coach Bhagat Singh and sparring partner Vikas, who is actually her coach, were staying. Antim asked her sister to go to the Games Village and come back with her belongings. Her sister was caught for impersonation and was taken to a ..

'It's part of game', Vinesh Phogat tells Indian coaches after losing medal

"It's part of the game," a brave Vinesh Phogat told the Indian coaches who met her after her shock disqualification from the Paris Olympics for weighing 100g more than the permissible limit in the women's 50kg category here on Wednesday. Women's national coach Virender Dahiya and Manjeet Rani met the feisty wrestler, who had caused a flutter at the wrestling arena by beating world number one and defending champion Yui Susaki in the opening round on Tuesday. As the nation prepared to celebrate Vinesh's medal-winning run -- she was assured of at-least a silver -- Vinesh was disqualified when she could not ace the second weigh-in. "It sent a shockwave through the wrestling contingent. The girls were feeling pretty low after the news broke. We met Vinesh and tried to console her. She was brave. She told us, 'it's hard luck that we missed the medal, but it is part of the game'," Dahiya said, sharing the details of their meeting. "Several IOA officials were also there to meet her." Ther

Boxer Imane Khelif fights to get closer to gold amid gender misconceptions

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif will press her fight for an Olympic gold medal Tuesday night amid the intense scrutiny over misconceptions about her gender. Khelif takes on Janjaem Suwannapheng of Thailand in boxing semifinals at the Paris Olympics at Roland Garros, Paris' famed tennis complex. The winner advances to the women's 66-kilogram finals on Friday night. Khelif, a two-time Olympian, has already clinched her first Olympic medal, which is also Algeria's first medal in women's boxing. She needs two more victories to claim only Algeria's second boxing gold medal, following Hocine Soltani in 1996. Khelif comfortably won her first two fights in Paris, but the ending of her first bout propelled her into a worldwide divide over gender identity and regulations in sports. Her first opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, tearfully quit after just 46 seconds, saying she was in too much pain from Khelif's punches. Carini's abandonment of the fight led to comments from the likes of former U.S.

Came for gold, but bronze better than going home empty-handed: Harmanpreet

Indian hockey team skipper Harmanpreet Singh and veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh on Tuesday expressed their disappointment at not being able to realise their goal of winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics but said a bronze will be at least better than returning home empty-handed. India missed a golden chance to enter the hockey final of the Olympics for the first time in 44 years as they went down 2-3 to Germany in a close last-four clash at the Games here. India will now take on Spain in the bronze medal match, while Germany will be up against Netherlands in the final. "This is extremely disappointing as we came here to win a gold medal. But, having said that, it's better to go home with bronze than nothing," Harmanpreet told Jio Cinema after the match. "When you lose in the semifinal game, it's not that easy to take as reaching the final is a dream of any athlete," the captain added. US rolls into semifinals of 2024 Paris Olympic basketball tournament

All the favored teams in the first three men's basketball quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics had problems. Canada lost to France. Serbia erased a 24-point deficit to beat Australia. Germany had to shake off a double-digit deficit before beating Greece. So, going into the fourth and final game of the night, the U.S. knew what it had to do. We wanted to come out and make sure we were the aggressor, U.S. coach Steve Kerr. They made it look easy, too. Devin Booker led a balanced front with 18 points and the Americans had little trouble with Brazil in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics, winning 122-87 on Tuesday. The U.S. (4-0) moves on to face Serbia (3-1) in Thursday's semifinals, while Germany (4-0) takes on France (3-1) in the other semifinal. Winners of those games will play Saturday night for the gold medal; Thursday's losers will play Saturday morning for the bronze medal. Everybody expects us to win," U.S. forward Jayson Tatum said. "But you don't take things for granted,

Brazil sets up Olympic final against US with a 4-2 win over Spain

Brazil will meet the United States in the final of the Olympic women's soccer tournament after beating world champion Spain 4-2. Gabi Portilho and Adriana struck at Stade de Marseille after an own goal from Irene Paredes had put the two-time silver medalist in an early lead. Victory means Brazil great Marta should get the chance to end her glittering international career by competing for gold after being suspended for the quarterfinals and semifinals. The 38-year-old Marta has said her sixth Olympics will be her last major tournament with the national team. Spain won't get the chance in Paris to further cement its place at the top of women's soccer by adding Olympic gold to the World Cup it won last year. Paredes' sixth-minute own goal put Brazil in control and Portilho doubled the advantage in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time. Adriana's header in 71st underlined Brazil's dominance. Salma Paralluelo pulled a goal back for Spain with a header in the 85th and almost .
