Indian shooters aim to break nation's 12-year medal drought in Paris

A squad full of debutants free from past baggage will aim to ace the ultimate test of their lives when the shooting competition of the Paris Olympics begins in the sleepy French town of Chateauroux on Friday. India has won four Olympic medals in shooting out of its overall tally of 35 but none in the last two editions of the Summer Games, putting the additional pressure of expectations on the record 21-member Indian contingent based in central France. The national shooting federation NRAI chose current form over pedigree to pick the squad for the mega event and it will be hoping they hit the bullseye at the National Shooting Centre here. Even the quota winners were made to battle out in the trials with the inexperienced Sandeep Singh pipping 2022 world champion Rudranksh Patil, who had secured India's quota in the 10m air rifle. Patil wrote to NRAI proposing his selection in the team despite finishing behind Sandeep in the trials but the federation stuck to its guns. The athletes

He also holds the record of being the only Indian referee to have been fast-tracked from two-star to three-star status. The last Indian to officiate at the Olympics was in 2012 London.

'Hardik Pandya needs more consistency', Scott Styris on Indian all-rounder

Hardik Pandya's skill sets are equivalent to premier England all-rounder and captain Ben Stokes but the mercurial Indian needs to show more consistency, reckoned former New Zealand cricketer Scott Styris. Recently, Suryakumar Yadav was preferred over Pandya as India's captain in T20Is for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, as chief selector Ajit Agarkar wanted someone who was likely to be available more often. This champion all-rounder (Pandya) has got as many skills as anyone. He's probably in a similar ability-zone as someone like Ben Stokes. He's got much more talent than that (his recent performances), Styris told PTI Videos in an interview. Styris did not have any doubt over Pandya's talent but the Kiwi wanted him to infuse more consistency into his performances. He is a phenomenally skilled cricketer. But he hasn't quite shown it yet as consistently enough for my liking. So, just let him get out there and just say, you've got to lead us now by your performance, he said.

Paris Olympics 2024 fever sets in, 9.7 million tickets sold so far

After getting off to a rocky start last year, Olympics 2024 organizers said the Paris Games broke the record for the most number of tickets sold or allocated in the event's history. And yet, tickets are still available. Organizers say 9.7 million tickets were sold or allocated for this year's Olympic and Paralympic Games, with 8.7 million sold for the former and a million for the latter. For Paris, a total of 10 million tickets were put on sale for the Olympics meaning that despite the historic popularity of the sporting events and unprecedented scale of this year's competitions, there will still be many empty seats remaining. However, the total ticketing figure will likely rise because tickets are still on sale for some of the 45 sports. "There's a real buzz in the city, and it's the first Games I've been to, said Carmen Rivera, 29, from Madrid. I'm not surprised it's the most popular one ever, as there has been the pandemic and other things that impacted the other recent ones.
