Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram today hit out at BJP for its resolution supporting implementation of GST and demonetisation, saying it was "utter contempt of public opinion". "BJP national executive supported implementation of GST. They should talk to traders & businessmen in their own party," he said in a tweet. Chidambaram also said the BJP national executive's support to demonetisation is "utter contempt of public opinion". In its national executive, the BJP adopted a six-point agenda, including one on praising the roll out of the GST which led to "one nation, one tax". It claimed the NDA government had "delivered" on its promise on corruption and black money, adding that demonetisation, a move which invited sharp criticism from opposition, "broke the backbone of black market as well as the black money hoarders".

Congress leader P Chidambaram today criticised the bullet train project, saying it will be a demonetisation-like move "which will kill everything else", and suggested that the money should instead be spent on improving rail safety. The former finance minister's comments come a day after a stampede on a footbridge connecting Mumbai's suburban railway stations of Parel and Elphinstone claimed 22 lives. The bullet train project, linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad, is not for ordinary people but an "ego trip for the high and mighty", he alleged. Chidambaram also suggested that Railway Minister Piyush Goyal should instead use the Rs one lakh crore meant for the project for ensuring railway safety in the country. "Bullet train will be like demonetisation. It will kill everything else including safety. "Railway Minister may take pledge on day after. Rs one lakh crore for rail safety, track upgrading, signalling & not for bullet train," he said on Twitter. Prime Minister Narendra

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram pitched for greater autonomy for the restive Jammu and Kashmir yet again today, drawing stinging criticism from the BJP, with Union minister Smriti Irani calling it "shocking and shameful". "The demand in the Kashmir Valley is to respect the letter and spirit of Article 370, that means they want greater autonomy. My interactions in J&K led me to the conclusion that when they ask for azadi, mostly, I am not saying all... the overwhelming majority, they want autonomy," he told reporters in Gujarat's Rajkot. "Yes, I do," Chidambaram said when he was asked if he still thinks that Jammu and Kashmir should be given greater autonomy. Chidambaram had in July 2016 advocated greater autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir, saying India should restore the "grand bargain" under which Kashmir had acceded by granting a large degree of autonomy to it. He had warned that otherwise the country will have to pay a "heavy price". Reacting sharply, the BJP ...
