AAP files complaint with EC against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for violating poll code

The AAP Friday filed a complaint with the Election Commission against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that his reference to the Armed Forces in a recent interview was in violation of the model code of conduct ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. In a letter to the Election Commission, the AAP legal cell alleged that the Prime Minister talked about Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was captured by Pakistan, during the interview to obtain political gains. The AAP said that the EC has given specific instructions for not using photographs of defence personnel and also asked parties not to make any reference to the Armed Forces during the political campaign, doing which would be seen as a violation of the poll code. "Using his (Abhinandan) name in an interview with an intention to obtain political gain is a complete violation of the model code of conduct," the AAP alleged in the letter. Abhinandan was captured by the Pakistani Army on February 27 after his MiG-21 Bison jet was shot .

Prosecution and defence have come "together": Digvijay

Senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh Friday said prosecution and defence have come "together" and this has led to people charged with terror acts getting let-off in court now. "As the prosecution and defence are together, those who had been caught (in connection with terror acts) are walking free now," Singh, the Congress candidate from the Bhopal Lok Sabha seat, told reporters here. The Congress veteran did not elaborate but he was apparently referring to the March 20 acquittal of right-wing activist Swami Aseemanand and three others in the 2007 Samjhauta Express bomb blast case by a special NIA court. "I have only said Sanghi terrorism. This I say today as well," he said when asked that the BJP was accusing him of using "Hindu terrorism" neologism. "Show me the clip (to ...

London mayor urges MPs to reject May's Brexit deal

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called on Britain's parliament Friday to reject Prime Minister Theresa May's divorce deal with the European Union and negotiate a new one with better terms. Khan told AFP ahead of parliament's third vote on May's twice-rejected Withdrawal Agreement with the other 27 EU nations that uncertainty associated with a Brexit extension was better than May's way forward. "My message to MPs from all parties is to vote against this deal," Khan said after meeting a group of EU nationals at a university in east London. "I appreciate that may lead to a bit more uncertainty, but I'd rather have a short period of uncertainty with a good future." Khan has focused his energy in the past year on preparing London's massive financial district for the consequences of a potentially abrupt and chaotic no-deal ending to Britain's 46-year involvement in the European project. He admitted that no-one entirely knew -- or was fully ready -- for the eventuality of the sides splitting apart ..

BJP wants to convert constitutional relation between JK, India into occupation: PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Friday alleged that the BJP government at the Centre was trying to convert the constitutional relationship between Jammu and Kashmir and the Union of India into an "occupation". "BJP is trying very hard to convert legal and constitutional relationship between Jammu and Kashmir and the Union into an occupation through subterfuge and systemic subversion," PDP leader Naeem Akhtar said in a statement here. Akhtar was reacting to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's blog in which he had stated that Article 35-A was "constitutionally vulnerable". "It is unfortunate that Sangh Parivar has fielded one of the better known lawyers of the country to oppose the Supreme Court orders which have upheld Article-35-A not once but twice in the past," the former state minister said. It seems the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is the ideological mentor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), considers itself above the apex court, he said. "That is why Jaitley ...
