Mamata trying to provoke constitutional crisis: BJP

The BJP Monday alleged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was trying to provoke a constitutional crisis and accused the West Bengal Police of threatening" customs officials who tried to check luggage of two women, including a relative of the TMC chief, at the Kolkata airport. BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain told reporters the state government seems to be working to protect a family -- a reference to Mamata Banerjee's MP nephew Abhishek, whose wife's luggage the officials tried to check. The chief minister should tell the people what was being brought in those suitcases that the Kolkata police had to "terrorise" customs officials to prevent them from checking them, he said. He also alleged the police threatened the customs officials. Abhishek, who is a Lok Sabha member, has suggested that his wife was chosen by customs officials because of her profile and rejected claims of BJP leaders that she was carrying anything in violation of laws. The BJP on Monday released its eighth list for the ensuing General elections. Row in TN Cong over naming Karti Chidambaram from Sivaganga seat

Former Union Minister E M Sudarsana Natchiappan who was a contender for the Sivaganga Lok Sabha seat has strongly opposed the party high command's decision allotting it to Karti P Chidambaram saying people "hated" that family. While the names of eight other Congress candidates from Tamil Nadu were announced on Friday, the nominee for Sivaganga - Karti Chidambaram - was declared only on Sunday evening. Besides Karti, the only other contender for Sivaganga seat was Natchiappan. Natchiappan, who emerged victorious in 1999 Lok Sabha polls defeating H Raja (BJP-runner-up) and P Chidambaram of the Tamil Maanila Congress (who secured the third position), said the decision by the high command has pushed the Congress into a tough situation since Karti Chidambaram was facing "court case." RLD chief files nomination from Muzaffarnagar

RLD chief Choudhary Ajit Singh on Monday filed his nomination as the SP-BSP-RLD alliance candidate from Muzaffarnagar for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. While former Union minister and sitting MP Sanjeev Balyan is the BJP contender, the Congress has not fielded any candidate from the seat. The Congress on Monday announced that Sachin Choudhary will be the party's candidate from Uttar Pradesh's Amroha parliamentary constituency in place of Rashid Alvi. The Congress on Saturday night had announced Alvi's candidature from Amroha in its eighth list. A former spokesperson of the Congress, Alvi has been a member of the Lok Sabha from Amroha (1999-2004) and a two-term Rajya Sabha MP from Andhra Pradesh. UN allows sanctions exemption for humanitarian aid to N. Korea
