BJP leaders should contest polls in Nepal, will win there: Majeed Memon

NCP's Rajya Sabha member Majeed Memon on Monday said that BJP leaders should contest elections in Nepal claiming that "chowkidars" will emerge victorious in the Himalayan nation, a day after BJP remarked that Congress may win elections in Pakistan."If Ram Madhav is saying that Congress would probably win elections in Pakistan if they contest from there, then I would like to give him a piece of advice. All BJP leaders are 'chowkidars' (watchmen) and they should contest elections in Nepal and they will win there," Memon, whose party is in alliance with Congress in Maharashtra, told ANI.On Sunday, BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav claimed that Congress leaders would probably win elections in Pakistan if they contested from the neighbouring country. He alleged that tweets by opposition leaders were retweeted more in Pakistan than in India."Their statements are retweets more by the people of the neighbouring country than the people in our own country. If they go there and contest ..

BJP names candidate for Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya

The BJP, an ally of the NPP- led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government in Meghalaya, has named party's state unit vice president Rikman G Momin as its candidate for Tura parliamentary constituency. On Saturday, the party had announced three-time MLA Sanbor Shullai as its nominee from Shillong Lok Sabha seat. The announcement, however, did not come across as a shocker to its allies in the MDA government as the party's state unit president, Shibun Lyngdoh, had clarified on an earlier occasion that the BJP, being a national party, will go by the decision of the central election committee. "The BJP is a national party and it depends on the central election committee whether the party would field any candidate in the seats available," Shibun told PTI. The ruling coalition, barring the BJP, is fielding UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh from the Shillong seat, while NPP's Agatha Sangma is a common candidate from the Tura seat. Momin is expected to submit his papers ...

The AAP government on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking constitution of a larger bench to expeditiously decide the issue of who controls the services in Delhi. TDP not to contest LS polls in Telangana

The Telugu Desam Party Monday decided not to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Telangana, a first since its formation in 1982. The party has decided to withdraw from contest to avoid helping the ruling TRS and BJP which are opposed to it, TDP sources said. The TRS has always tried to make sure that the TDP does not exist as a party in Telangana, the sources alleged. It may be recalled that a large number of TDP leaders have switched over to the TRS in the last few years which has weakened the party substantially in Telangana. The latest to join TRS was TDP politburo member Nama Nageswara Rao who would have been the party candidate from Khammam constituency. Rao who joined the TRS last week, is now its nominee from Khammam in the parliamentary polls. TDP, the ruling party in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, has been opposing the BJP since its exit from the NDA on the issue of denial of special status to the state. The TDP sources said the party has in principle agreed to the .

2014 polls: Over 500 out of 607 candidates lost deposits in Bihar's 40 seats

More than 500 candidates out of a total of 607, who fought the 2014 Lok Sabha elections across the 40 seats in Bihar, had lost their deposits at the hustings, according to ECI data. The total number of candidates who forfeited their deposits were 512, while 607 were left in the fray out of 709 who had filed their nominations. In Muzaffarpur, 27 out of 29 candidates lost their deposits, the highest number for any constituency in the state. Only BJP's Ajay Sahni, who won, and Congress' Akhilesh Prasad Singh, who was the runner-up, were spared the ignominy. At seven, the lowest number of lost deposits was reported from Kishanganj but it was primarily because only nine candidates were in the fray. The election in the Muslim-dominated constituency, appears to have been highly polarised as the winner, late Mohd Asrarul Haq of the Congress, bagged 53.15 per cent of votes, followed by Dilip Kumar Jaiswal of the BJP who secured 32.19 per cent votes. In yet another indication of the polarized ..

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attacks BJP over plight of 'shiksha mitras' in UP

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Monday attacked the BJP over the plight of 'shiksha mitras' or contractual teachers in Uttar Pradesh, alleging the ruling party leaders are busy marketing T-shirts instead of attending to those suffering. Hundreds of 'shiksha mitras' have been protesting and pressing for better pay and appointment as assistant teachers in the state. "The hard work of Uttar Pradesh's 'shiksha mitras' is insulted everyday. Scores of sufferers committed suicide. Those who took to the streets to protest were beaten with lathis, National Security Act was registered against them," the AICC incharge Uttar Pradesh East tweeted. "BJP leaders are busy marketing T-shirts, I wish they had paid attention to those suffering," she claimed.

New Zealand orders top-level inquiry into mosque massacres

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday ordered an independent judicial inquiry into whether police and intelligence services could have prevented the Christchurch mosque attacks on March 15. Ardern said a royal commission -- the most powerful judicial probe available under New Zealand law -- was needed to find out how a single gunman was able to kill 50 people in an attack that shocked the world. "It is important that no stone is left unturned to get to how this act of terrorism occurred and how we could have stopped it," she told reporters. New Zealand's spy agencies have faced criticism in the wake of the attack for concentrating on the threat from Islamic extremism. Instead, the victims were all Muslims and the massacre was allegedly carried out by a white supremacist fixated on the belief that there was an Islamist plot to "invade" Western countries. "One question we need to answer is whether or not we could or should have known more," Ardern said. "New Zealand is not

Thai junta poised to retain power as nation awaits vote results

Thailand's election results were due Monday, with the junta appearing poised to hold on to power in a vote that saw its main rival diminished but vaulted a new pro-democracy force into the kingdom's politics. Sunday's poll -- seen as a referendum on the military -- was the first since a 2014 coup, and was held under new rules written by the junta to ease its transformation into a civilian government. Despite that, analysts had not expected the army-linked Phalang Pracharat party to win the popular vote, given mounting anger at junta rule and the enduring popularity of Pheu Thai -- the party of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra. But Thai politics is unpredictable, and as preliminary results trickled in Sunday, Phalang Pracharat -- with coup leader Prayut Chan-O-Cha as its candidate for prime minister -- clung to the lead, racking up more than 7.6 million votes with 93 percent of ballots tallied. "This will give them... popular legitimacy and more credibility," Thitinan Pongsudhirak, a ...

No proof that Trump campaign conspired with Russia to influence 2016 election: US attorney general

Robert Mueller's investigation did not find sufficient evidence to establish that US President Donald Trump or any of his aides coordinated with Russia's efforts to influence the 2016 election, Attorney General William Barr has said as he summarised the key findings from the special counsel's historic probe that has cast a dark shadow over the presidency for nearly two years. In a four-page letter to top lawmakers on Sunday, Barr highlighted two sections of Mueller's report -- Russia's efforts to affect the 2016 presidential election and whether the president obstructed justice. The long-awaited report was submitted on Friday to Barr, who pored over the document before handing a summary to Congress. Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey and other actions throughout the probe raised concerns about the president trying to end the investigation. Mueller, who spent nearly two years investigating Moscow's determined effort to sabotage the last presidential election, found no ...

Barr not a neutral observer, release full Mueller findings: Pelosi

US Attorney General William Barr is "not a neutral observer," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, after Barr revealed that Special Counsel Robert Mueller did not find either US President Donald Trump or his associates guilty of conspiring with the Russians to influence the 2016 Presidential elections.Pelosi, along with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, further demanded the release of Mueller's complete report regarding Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential elections."Attorney General Barr's letter raises as many questions as it answers. The fact that Special Counsel Mueller's report does not exonerate the President on a charge as serious as obstruction of justice demonstrates how urgent it is that the full report and underlying documentation be made public without any further delay," the joint statement released by the Democratic leaders outlined."Given Mr Barr's public record of bias against the Special Counsel's inquiry, he is not a neutral observer and is not in a ...

Prince Charles and Camilla launch first royal visit to Cuba

Prince Charles and his wife Camilla began the first official trip to Cuba by the British royal family on Sunday, in a pomp-filled display of disagreement with the Trump administration's strategy of economically isolating the communist island. The heir to the British throne arrived in Havana and laid a wreath at the memorial to colonial independence hero Jose Marti, near massive portraits of socialist revolutionary icons including guerrilla fighter Che Guevara. The next two days include visits to historic sites, a solar park, organic farm and biomedical research centre, and a meeting with entrepreneurs, cultural gala and dinner with President Miguel Diaz-Canel. It does not include visits with political dissidents or other critics of Cuba's single-party system, a decision prompting criticism from Cuban exiles. Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida last month asked Charles to cancel his trip based on Cuba's support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the island's "decades-long ...
