Sena seeks NHRC intervention into lathicharge on MES workers

The Shiv Sena in Maharashtra Thursday sought intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) into the "attack" by Karnataka police personnel on the activists of the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) in Belgavi over a border dispute between two states. The Uddhav Thackeray-led party is a constituent in the BJP-led governments in Centre and Maharashtra. In a released issued here, Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe said she apprised Maharashtra Revenue minister Chandrakant Patil about the issue and requested him to write to the NHRC over the lathicharge by Karnataka police. Karnataka and Maharashtra are locked in a bitter dispute over inclusion of Belgavi and other Marathi-speaking villages into Maharashtra. The matter is pending before the Supreme Court. Trump, Erdogan discuss Syria in phone call: Turkish presidency

US President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the Syrian conflict during a phone call on Thursday, the Turkish presidency said in a statement. The statement was released not long after it was announced that Turkish and American troops had begun conducting joint patrols in the northern Syrian city of Manbij. The leaders discussed the cooperation agreement in Manbij, which is held by a US-backed Kurdish militia that Turkey deems a terrorist group, the statement said. YSRC chief writes to guv over probe into attack on him

YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy Thursday raised concerns over the Police probe into the recent attack on him and sought Governor ESL Narasimhan's intervention to transfer the case to an agency not under the control of the Andhra Pradesh government. In a letter to Narasimhan, Reddy claimed that there were serious concerns that the police probing the case was being "motivated and driven" by the state government to suit its needs. YSR Congress leaders met the Governor at the Raj Bhavan here and submitted a representation, a party release said. The YSR congress leader was injured when he was attacked by a man with a small knife at the airport lounge in Visakhapatnam. The police in its remand report in a court had said it was an attempt to murder Reddy. Sri Lankan Parliament will not be convened on Monday: Prez Sirisena's party

Sri Lanka's suspended Parliament will not be convened before November 16, President Maithripala Sirisena's party said on Thursday, hours after officials at Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa's office indicated that the House will meet on Monday. Susil Premjayantha, a senior parliamentarian from Sirisena's United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), said Parliament is unlikely to meet on November 5. He said that Parliament needs time to prepare to meet and there is not enough time to meet on Monday. Premjayantha said reports claiming Parliament will meet on Monday were misleading and the House was most likely to meet on November 16, as announced by the president earlier. NCP workers hold protest over Modi's Rs 15 lakh poll promise

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) workers Thursday staged a novel protest to question Prime Minister Narendra Modi why Rs 15 lakh have not been deposited in the bank accounts of citizens yet as was "promised" by him. As part of the protest, the workers went to a local bank and symbolically got passbook entries made to check if the amount was deposited or not. The protest was staged under the guidance of NCP leader Dhananjay Munde, a statement issued by his office said. Munde, however, did not physically partake in the protest. Gujarat BJP appoints in-charge teams for LS seats in state

In the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Gujarat BJP on Thursday appointed three-member in-charge teams for each of the 26 constituencies in the state. State BJP chief Jitu Vaghani made the appointments, a party release said. The BJP had won all Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat in 2014. However, in the 2017 state elections, the party won 99 out of the 182 seats in the Gujarat Assembly, managing to retain power by a thin majority. 'Bus service between China and PoK is violation of India's sovereignty'

Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar on Thursday asserted that any bus service between Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and China is a violation of India's sovereignty.While addressing the weekly MEA press briefing, Kumar said, "We have lodged a strong protest with China and Pakistan on the proposed bus service that will operate from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir to China under so-called China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Delhi govt, railways sign MoU for Mukhyamantri Tirth Yatra Yojana

The Delhi government signed a memorandum of understanding with the railways on Thursday to cater to pilgrims availing the Mukhyamantri Tirth Yatra Yojana, an official statement stated. It stated the MoU was inked by officials of the Delhi government and the railways in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia at the Delhi Secretariat in New Delhi. A tourism department official said as per the agreement, Railways will provide separate coaches to pilgrims who are selected under the Yojana. Under the scheme, the AAP government will bear expenses of 77,000 pilgrims every year. Delhi residents above the age of 60 are covered under this scheme. Those selected will be allowed to be accompanied by an attendant aged 18 years or above and their expenditure will also be borne by the city administration. According to the government, the scheme will enable 1,100 senior citizens from each of the 70 assembly constituencies of Delhi every year to undertake free pilgrimage.

India, Botswana to expedite establishment of diamond institute, boost defence cooperation

India and Botswana on Thursday decided to expedite work on establishing the India-Africa Diamond Institute in the southern African country as the two nations also agreed to enhance cooperation in defence and security. Delhi-Centre row: SC reserves verdict on pleas challenging administrative notifications

The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on the challenges to notifications related to control over services, setting up of Commission of Inquiry and power of Anti-corruption Bureau in the ongoing tussle between Delhi and Centre. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan reserved the verdict after hearing rejoinder arguments from the counsels for Delhi government. "Hearing concluded. Judgement reserved," the bench said.
