No formal invite was sent to President Trump to visit India: Official sources

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had extended an invitation to US President Donald Trump to visit India at his convenience but no formal or written invite was sent to him, official sources said Wednesday. The clarification by the sources came two days after a White House spokesperson said Trump was honoured by Modi's invitation to be Chief Guest of India's Republic Day but is unable to participate due to scheduling constraints. "We have noted the statement made by the White House about the visit of US President Donald Trump to India. It may be recalled that during the visit of Prime Minister to the US in June 2017, he had extended an invitation to President Trump to visit India at his convenience," said a source. Rly scraps flexi fare in some trains, reduces fares during lean season in others

In a huge relief for passengers, railways has scrapped flexi-fare in 15 premium trains completely, while the scheme will no longer be applicable in 32 trains during lean periods. It has also reduced flexi fares from 1.5 to 1.4 times the base ticket fare in 101 trains, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said Wednesday. On September 9, 2016, the railways had introduced flexi-fare for premier trains: 44 Rajdhani, 52 Duronto and 46 Shatabdi Express trains. Under this, the base fare increases by 10 per cent with every 10 per cent of berths sold, subject to a prescribed limit. There was no change in the existing fare for first AC and economy class. "As a gift to passengers this festive season, Railways has decided to reduce Flexi Fares from 1.5 to 1.4 times the base ticket fare, and to completely remove Flexi Fares from trains with less than 50 per cent occupancy," the minister tweeted. Chidambaram slams Centre for invoking never-used clause of RBI Act

Slamming the government for using for the first time a clause of the RBI Act, former Union finance minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday alleged that the NDA dispensation is "hiding facts" about the economy and is "desperate". In a series of tweets, the senior Congress leader said the governments he was a part of in the past had never used Section 7 of the Reserve Bank of India Act, under which a direct order can be issued by the government to the central bank to carry out its wishes in "public interest". Seoul, Pyongyang to discuss joint bid for 2032 Olympics

South and North Korean officials will discuss on Friday the possibility of submitting a joint bid for hosting the 2032 Summer Olympic Games, the South Korean Ministry of Unification said on Wednesday."The government is going to discuss during at these talks the issues related to exchanges and cooperation in sports, primarily, the issue of joint (bid for) hosting the 2032 Summer Olympic Games of South and North (Korea) as well as the joint participation of South and North Korean athletes in the 2020 Summer Olympics and other international sports events," the ministry said in a statement.The negotiations will be held at the initiative of North Korea.In September, North Korea and South Korea agreed to send a joint team to the 2020 Summer Olympics as well as to work on preparing the joint bid for the 2032 Olympic Games. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat Wednesday paid floral tributes to Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel on his birth anniversary and recalled his contribution to the country's unification post independence. Section 7 of RBI Act empowers govt to issue directions to Reserve Bank

Section 7 of the RBI Act, hogging headlines following reported differences between the North Block and the Mint Street, empowers the central government to issue directions to the Reserve Bank in public interest. The Section 7 (1) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, however has never been invoked by the government so far. The Finance Ministry, located in the North Block here, has cited the never-before-used power of issuing directions to RBI Governor to seek a resolution to differences with the central bank, sources with knowledge of the development said. Section 7 pertains to management. "The Central Government may from time to time give such directions to the Bank as it may, after consultation with the Governor of the Bank, consider necessary in the public interest," says Section 7(1) of the RBI Act, 1934. Dilbagh Singh appointed full-time DG of JK Police

Dilbag Singh was appointed Wednesday as the full-time director general of the Jammu and Kashmir Police as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court, officials said here. Singh took over as interim chief of the state police force on September 6 after his predecessor S P Vaid, caught in a verbal duel with the new Jammu and Kashmir administration, was shunted out and posted as transport commissioner. The name of Singh, a 1987-batch IPS officer, was cleared by the State Administrative Council headed by Governor Satyapal Malik here. Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) SS Gurm on Wednesday moved the Delhi High Court in the ongoing bribery case against CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana to quash a First Information Report filed against him by the probe agency. In the petition, Gurm has alleged that Asthana was "misleading" and the CBI was trying to protect him.Asthana came under scrutiny after the CBI filed an FIR against him for allegedly accepting a bribe from a businessman, who was linked to Moin Akhtar Qureshi case.
