Maha govt seeks help of housing societies to improve voting

The Maharashtra government is relying on office-bearers of housing societies to spread voter awareness and improve polling percentage in the Lok Sabha elections in the state. The government, through its cooperatives department and collectorates, has reminded housing societies about its seven-year-old directive to make their presidents and secretaries "booth-level volunteers" to ensure 100 per cent voting on their premises. The department had issued a directive in 2012 to office-bearers of housing societies asking them to make audit of their respective society mandatory and furnish a list of shifted, dead and new voters before July 31 every year. "This directive is still very much relevant and we are reminding the office-bearers of housing societies to ensure 100 per cent voting in coming elections," an official told PTI Tuesday. However, Dharmin Sampat, honorary secretary, Co- operative Societies Residents, Users and Welfare Association, is not impressed with the ...

Post Pulwama, govt grants more financial powers to 3 services to buy weapons

In the wake of the Pulwama terror attack, the government has granted emergency powers to the three services to procure weapons and military hardware to enhance their operational preparedness along the border with Pakistan, official sources said. Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui and Abdelkader Bensalah -- who served as upper house speaker until being appointed interim president after Bouteflika quit -- have also faced calls to step down. "We will continue what we have started," said university student Linda, one of thousands taking part in a protest Tuesday in central Algiers. Police were massively deployed around the capital's post office building, the focal point of anti-government rallies which first erupted in February. "Free Algeria," chanted ...

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi Tuesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he was "exploiting" the valour of the jawans and their sacrifices for political gains. Criss-crossing through four districts of Kollam, Pathnamthitta, the ground zero of Sabarimala protests, Alappuzha and Thiruvananthapuram, Gandhi targeted Modi on a host of issues and hit out at the Sangh Parivar but refrained from attacking the CPI-M-led LDF government in the state. Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) president Babulal Marandi chose Koderma, a general seat, to contest the Lok Sabha elections as he knows that tribals have rejected him, state Chief Minister Raghubar Das Tuesday claimed. Das also alleged Marandi's domicile policy had triggered violence in the state in 2002 and 2003 when he was the chief minister of a BJP government. "Five out of 14 Lok Sabha seats are reserved for tribals (in Jharkhand). But he is contesting from a general seat as tribals have come to know that he talks about development but does not follow it at the ground level," the chief minister said. Marandi had won the Koderma Lok Sabha seat, currently held by Ravindra Ray of the BJP, thrice - in 2004, 2006 and 2009. He emerged third in the 2014 general elections. Marandi who filed his papers from Koderma on Monday was the first chief minister of Jharkhand, carved out of Bihar in 2000 when he was a BJP leader.
