The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday alleged that the BJP was resorting to selling merchandise like pens and T-shirts for votes as the promises made by them to the people in the last elections have not fulfilled. The Election Commission Tuesday announced bypolls to four assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu on May 19 which is the last phase of polling in the Lok Sabha election. The four vacant constituencies are -- Sulur, Aravakurichi, Thirupparankundram and Ottapidaram (SC) With this, bypolls are being held to 22 seats, including 16 that had fallen vacant following the disqualification of ruling AIADMK MLAs loyal to TTV Dhinakaran. The bypolls to 18 other seats are being held on April 18. In a release, the Election Commission said the date was decided after taking in to consideration various factors like festivals, electoral rolls, weather conditions. Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu Tuesday said he was not "fully satisfied" with the Supreme Court decision on VVPATs and the Election Commission has to ensure there are not discrepancies in paper trail slips. If there is any mismatch, the EC should ensure counting of all VVPATs in the country, he suggested. The Supreme Court Monday directed the EC to increase the random matching of paper trail machine slips with EVM results from one to five polling booths in each assembly segment for the multi-phase Lok Sabha polls starting Thursday. "I am not fully satisfied. But something is better than nothing," Naidu told PTI, adding that the EC has to ensure there are no discrepancies in VVPATs. He, however, said that the move to count even five VVPATs will "hurt" BJP prospects.
