Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's office on Saturday said that 71 people lost their lives due to excessive pre-monsoon showers in the state since April. The pre-monsoon rains in 2025 is the highest rainfall recorded during the pre-monsoon seasons and in the month of May in the last 125 years, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said in a statement. The state normally receives 74 mm of rainfall in May, but the actual rainfall was 219 mm, which is 197 per cent higher than the average normal rainfall, it said. Similarly, in the pre-monsoon period of 2025 (March 1 to May 31), the state normally receives 115 mm of rainfall, but the actual rainfall was 286 mm, which is 149 per cent higher than the average normal rainfall. The recent rainfall following extreme heat conditions across parts of the country has not caused any damage to major crops and is expected to boost summer crop production prospects, Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi said Wednesday. Speaking about the weather pattern, Chaturvedi noted that sudden rainfall, hailstorms and gusty winds after extreme heat conditions are typically observed during this time of the year. However, he pointed to the "unpredictability and severity" of such weather conditions due to climate change. "No damage has been reported so far due to sudden rainfall. As many as 27 people have died in unseasonal rain-related incidents in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra to date this year, while crops on 4,000 hectares were affected in 597 villages, as per official data. The region has received 116 per cent rainfall in May, stated a report prepared by the divisional commissioner's office on Tuesday. It said all eight districts recorded unseasonal rain until May 20, resulting in the death of 27 people due to lightning strikes, flood, and other rain-related incidents. 391 animals owned by farmers have also died during this period. Heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning lashed several parts of Mumbai on Tuesday evening, slowing down road traffic, officials said. They said the intensity of the pre-monsoon rain was higher in eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai as compared to the city, which received only light showers.
