Bakrid: Muslims offer prayers for those affected by floods in Kerala

Bakrid was today marked by special prayers at mosques in Kerala for those who lost their lives in the rains and floods and those who continue to suffer due to the unprecedented deluge in the state. Hundreds of faithful thronged the mosques across the ravaged state in large numbers to mark the festival of sacrifice. In Tamil Nadu too, prayers were offered for the well-being of those affected due to the floods in the neighbouring state. The number of special eidgahs in Kerala was comparatively low at many places in the wake of the low-lying areas still inundated and the ongoing rescue-and-relief operations. At many mosques, volunteers were seen collecting donations for the flood-hit people from the devotees. Giving out the festival messages, religious scholars and clerics urged the faithful to contribute generously to rebuild the lives of the flood-hit people. Moulavi V P Suhaib, Imam of the Palamyam Juma Masjid here, urged the people to extend all possible help to those affected. "A .

Eye on 2019? Akhilesh promises a city after Lord Vishnu to counter BJP's Ram Temple pitch

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav today announced that a grand city named after Lord Vishnu would be developed, which would have a spectacular temple inspired by Cambodia's sprawling Angkor Wat, in the state if his party comes to power. Significantly, Yadav's comments come after BJP leader and UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya last week raked the Ram temple issue and suggested there could be a legislative route for the construction of a temple in Ayodhya. "We will develop a city in the name of Lord Vishnu over 2,000 acres of land near Lion Safari (Etawah). We have a lot of land in Chambal ravines and the city will have a grand Vishnu temple, that will be a copy of famous Angkor Wat temple," Yadav, a former UP chief minister, told PTI. Earlier, Maurya had said that if the need arises a Bill for the construction of a Ram temple could be brought in the Parliament. The UP deputy chief minister had suggested that the bill could be brought if there was "no way out" and his ..

Linking Islam with terror insults Muslims: Ajmer Dargah head

The spiritual head of Ajmer Dargah today said linking Islam with terrorism is an insult to Muslims and those who do so are not aware of its teachings. In a statement to mark Eid, the Deewan of Ajmer Dargah, Zainul Abedin Ali Khan said the Prophet had given the message of peace and harmony, and the religion promoted amity between people. He asked Muslims to present the true picture of their religion before non-Muslims. Islam and terrorism cannot coexist, he said. Terrorism cannot have any connection with Islam and if anyone brands it a terror religion, he is only expressing hatred towards it, the head of the Sufi shrine said. The Dargah Deewan said Muslims should follow the principles of Islam fully and should not have any feeling of disrespect towards other religions. Similarly other people should also learn that Islam promotes love and harmony, he added. He said being a Muslim did not just mean wearing a skullcap and keeping a beard. Muslims living in WB since childhood need not worry about NRC: Roopa Ganguly

Muslims living in West Bengal since childhood don't need to worry about the NRC, BJP MP Roopa Ganguly today said, while urging a section of political parties not to politicise every issue "for the sake of national interest". Ganguly's statement comes against the backdrop of a war of words between the TMC and the BJP over the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. "Pakistan was formed after the Partition on the basis that it becomes a Muslim country. Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) was mainly for Muslims. West Bengal was made part of India as it was for Hindus, who had come from (the then) East Pakistan because they were driven out from there," Ganguly said on the sidelines of a programme here. "Those who are living in India since their childhood, including Muslims, do not need to worry about the NRC," she said. "The Muslims who are living in Bengal since their childhood (for many decades) need not to worry about the NRC. There are certain things which should not be politicised .

Mosque offers shelter to Hindus in rain-hit Kerala

With a mosque opening its portals to distressed Hindus and Muslims cleaning temples, the murderous monsoon seems to have washed away the barriers of religious differences in rain-ravaged Kerala. Amid the distress triggered by the floods, a mosque in northern Malappuram, one of the worst-hit districts, has offered shelter to 17 displaced Hindu families, including women, children and the elderly. The Juma Masjid, located at Akampadam in Chaliyar village, has virtually turned a relief camp since the second spell of rains started to devastate the northern districts on August 8. Cutting across religion and caste, the displaced people were given space to sleep inside the mosque, provided food prepared at its canteen and given rice, pulses and other essential materials when they returned home. Most of the 78 people, who were given shelter at the Juma Masjid, were Hindus, Chaliyar village panchayat chief P T Usman said. "There were 26 families who had sought refuge in the mosque, a majority ..

Temple school in Pakistan where Muslim woman teaches Hindu students

Inside a Hindu temple in a shanty area in Pakistan's Karachi city, Anum Agha wearing the traditional Muslim Hijab greets her students with 'salaam' and gets a loud 'Jai Shri Ram' in response. Anum runs a school inside the temple in the Basti Guru area of the southern port city. The school is situated in the middle of an informal Hindu settlement which is facing constant threats from land grabbers. But Anum is determined to impart knowledge about education, health and basic rights to the children of the minority community. In the settlement, 80 to 90 Hindu families live in a close cluster of wooden huts and some semi-constructed houses. One can see Anum holding discussions with children of the settlement after her classes are over. "Everyone is surprised when I tell them about our school inside this temple but we had no other place to hold our classes when I first started coming here last year," she told PTI. Rohingya refugees celebrate holiday amid memories of home

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees living in sprawling camps in Bangladesh are celebrating the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, praying for better lives as they wonder if they'll ever again celebrate at their homes in Myanmar. People streamed into makeshift mosques in the camps, the children dressed in new clothing. Those who could afford it feasted on buffalo meat. Muslims often slaughter sheep, cattle or goats on Eid Al-Adha, and distribute some of the meat to the poor. More than 700,000 Rohingya poured into Bangladesh last year, fleeing a brutal crackdown in Buddhist-dominated Myanmar, where the Muslim Rohingya have long faced discrimination.
