PM Modi prays at Mukhtinath temple in Nepal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today prayed at Nepal's iconic Muktinath temple that is regarded sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists, becoming the first world leader to offer prayers there. Modi also offered prayers at the Pashupatinath temple, located on the banks of the Bagmati river. The Pashupatinath temple is regarded as the most sacred and oldest temple of Shiva (Pashupati) in Nepal. After offering prayers at the Pashupatinath temple, Modi signed the visitor's book and was presented with a miniature replica of the temple. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today prayed at Nepal's iconic Muktinath temple that is regarded sacred by both Hindus and Buddhists, becoming the first world leader to offer prayers there. Modi wore a Buddhist traditional red dress and carried out rituals both according to the Hindu and Buddhist tradition. Namaz offered without interference in Gurgaon: Officials

Muslims here offered the Friday namaz today at identified open spaces amid police security and without any interference from Hindutva organisations that had opposed prayers outdoors, officials said. The administration had thrashed out an agreement between the two sides after tension over the past few weeks over the Friday namaz. Earlier, some people had disrupted Friday prayers, saying namaz should be offered only in mosques. Muslim groups say there are not enough mosques available in the city. Add chief sec to probe quality of bullet proof vest worn by

Assam Additional Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna will inquire into the quality and effectiveness of the bullet proof vests worn by slain sub-inspector Bhaskar Kalita during the encounter with ULFA(I) militants in Tinsukia district in the state, official sources said today. A notification to this effect was issued yesterday and the inquiry report, including recommendations would be submitted within 15 days from the date of issue of the notification, an official release said. Manhunt after 'extremist' S Africa mosque attack

South African police hunting for three men who stabbed worshippers at a mosque outside Durban said today that the attackers' motive was unknown but "elements of extremism" were involved. Three attackers killed one worshipper, reported to be an imam, and seriously injured two others after midday prayers on Thursday at a mosque in Verulam town, on the outskirts of the eastern port city. The assailants, who also set off a petrol bomb inside the Shia mosque, escaped in a car after the attack. "There are elements of extremism because the incident happened in a place of worship and the manner in which it was conducted," Simphiwe Mhlongo, spokesman for the Hawks police unit, told AFP. South Africa probes extremism element in mosque attack

South Africa's elite police unit says it is investigating an "element of extremism" in the deadly mosque attack in which three people's throats were slit after midday prayers. Hawks spokesman Simphiwe Mhlongo told The Associated Press that "you can see elements of hatred to a certain religion" in yesterday's attack in the mosque's worship space. But Mhlongo says police cannot yet say whether the assault on the Imam Hussein mosque in the eastern town of Verulam, just north of Durban, can be called a terror attack. He says police cannot confirm reports that the three attackers were Egyptian. They are still at large. Mhlongo says two victims are still hospitalised. TN to provide 5000 tons of free rice to mosques during Ramzan

Tamil Nadu government today said it will provide over 5000 tonnes of free rice to mosques across the state to be used in the preparation of gruel during the Ramzan festival season. The move was keeping in line with the similar practice followed in previous years, an official release said, recalling that the initiative was earlier launched by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa. Chief Minister K Palaniswami has received requests from the Muslim community for provision of free rice this year also, following which he has approved the supply of 5145 tonnes for around 3000 mosques, it said. The government will incur an additional expenditure of Rs 12.97 crore, it added.

Woman chops off her tongue, offers it at temple in MP

A 45-year-old woman chopped off her tongue and offered it at a temple in a village here, the police said today. Guddi Tomar, a devotee of Goddess Durga, cut her tongue yesterday and offered it at the Bijasen Mata temple in Tarsama village, about 50 kms from here, following which she fell unconscious, Porsa police station in-charge Atul Singh said. Some people present in the temple took her to Morena's district hospital where she is undergoing treatment, he said. The police officer said the woman took the step out of her own "faith and belief". The woman's husband, Ravi Tomar, said his wife had been visiting the Bijasen temple every day in the morning and evening since they were married. "We have three sons.
