Finance Commission would listen to views of all, says chairman Panagariya

The 16th Finance Commission is open to listening to the views of all states and consider all possibilities, including their grievance on facing a cut in central allocations despite better performance on the economy front, the Commission's Chairman Arvind Panagariya said on Tuesday. Panagariya, who is on a visit to Telangana along with the other members of the Commission as part of the panel's state visits, said it was expected that better-performing states would generally say that (they faced a reduction in central allocations). "That (states which made progress saying their allocations declined) is to be expected. At least so far, what we have seen, in two of the states, Karnataka and Telangana, we have heard that," the economist told reporters here. Congress appoints B Mahesh Kumar Goud as Telangana unit's president

The Congress on Friday appointed B Mahesh Kumar Goud as president of its Telangana unit, replacing A Revanth Reddy. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed Goud as president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect, a statement issued by AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal said. The party appreciates the contributions of the outgoing PCC president A Revanth Reddy. The appointment comes days after Congress president Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu and discussed organisational changes in the state. Though there had been no official word on the meeting's agenda, it was understood that deliberations were held about the selection of a new Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president. Reddy had remained president of the Congress in Telangana even after becoming chief minister at the end of last year.

Telangana govt orders to provide free electricity in govt edu institutions

The Telangana government on Thursday issued an order providing free power supply to government educational institutions in the state to impart quality education. The scheme will into effect immediately, the Government Order (GO) said. According to the modalities for the scheme's implementation, the DISCOMS (power distribution companies) will create an online portal with logins given to respective departments of all the government educational institutions of Telangana. The secretaries of the concerned departments would finalise the list of institutions to be covered in the scheme and include the same on the online portal. Monthly billing will be done for each institution and will be displayed in the departments' login. The portal would also enable generation of reports pertaining to the consumption, bill amount, historical consumption, billing, payments and others. Telangana flood fury: CM Revanth Reddy to visit affected areas today

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will be visiting flood-affected areas in Mahabubabad district on Tuesday, the second day of his tour to rain-hit places. According to official sources, Reddy stayed overnight in Khammam after visiting several places in the town accompanied by some of his cabinet colleagues. "The CM will leave for flood affected areas in Mahabubabad from Khammam today and will also hold a review meeting with officials on the situation," sources said. At least 16 people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents as torrential rains lashed Telangana. At least 16 people lost their lives in various rain-related incidents, while some persons were still missing as heavy rains lashed several parts of Telangana since August 31 even as Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy urged the Centre to declare the floods in the state as a national calamity. Revanth Reddy, who visited flood victims and later held a review with ministers and officials at Khammam, said 16 people died, while crops in lakhs of acres suffered damage, as per preliminary information, despite the government's efforts to prevent loss of life and damage to property. He said he has written to PM Narendra Modi to declare the heavy rains and flood as a national calamity and to visit the flood-hit areas. Foxconn eyes Hyderabad investment, CM Reddy pitches 'fourth city' project

Taiwanese electronics major Foxconn has expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities in Hyderabad, Telangana government said on Friday. Foxconn Chairman Young Liu met with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy in New Delhi and the latter invited the company to invest in a proposed "fourth city" to be developed on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Reddy assured Liu of full support, including necessary permits and incentives, for setting up factories in the state.
