Traffic accident in southern Afghanistan leaves 21 dead and 38 injured

A traffic accident in southern Afghanistan left at least 21 people dead and 38 others injured, according to a provincial traffic department. The accident occurred on Sunday morning in Gerashk district of Helmand province on the main highway between southern Kandahar and western Herat provinces, a statement from the department in Helmand said. A motorbike crashed into a passenger bus, which then hit a fuel tanker on the opposite side of the road, said Qadratullah, a traffic official in Helmand. An investigation into the accident was underway, he added. Eleven of the 38 injured people were transferred to hospitals with serious injuries, said Hzatullah Haqqani, a spokesman for the Helmand police chief. Traffic accidents are common in Afghanistan, mainly due to poor road conditions and driver carelessness.

147 killed in road accidents in Mumbai from Jan to June this year: Shinde

As many as 147 people have died in road accidents in Mumbai between January and June 2023, the Maharashtra government informed the state assembly on Tuesday. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde gave the figures in a written reply in the House during the ongoing winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur. He was responding to a question raised by Congress legislator Ashok Chavan. Between January and June, 132 accidents took place in Mumbai and 147 people died in them. The RTO officials have already undertaken vehicle inspection drive to prevent such incidents, the CM said.

In Punjab, road accidents caused more deaths in 2021, 2022: NCRB data

Road accidents in Punjab in 2021 and 2022 caused more deaths than injuries, according to the latest NCRB report. However, in neighbouring Haryana, while the number of fatalities were higher than in Punjab, road accidents caused more injuries than deaths, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data showed. Road accidents have generally caused more injuries than deaths. However, in a few states such as Punjab, these have led to a higher number of fatalities than injuries, the data shows. In Punjab in 2022, 6,122 road accidents caused 4,688 deaths and 3,372 injuries. The previous year, 6,097 road accidents caused 4,516 deaths and 3,034 injuries. In Haryana, 10,049 road accidents were reported in 2021. The figure rose marginally to 10,654 in 2022. In 2021, 4,983 people died in Haryana while the figure for 2022 was at 5,228. Bihar records most road accident deaths near religious places: NCRB

Bihar recorded the maximum number of road accidents near religious places in the country last year in which 2,995 people were killed, according to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The state also registered a 13.1 per cent rise in overall road accidents in 2022 over the previous year, according to 'Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2022' released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). "A total of 2258 people (Male-1791 and Female-467) died in road accidents near religious places in rural areas across the state in 2022. This is highest in the country, followed by Uttar Pradesh (686), Jharkhand (525), Tamil Nadu (506), Madhya Pradesh (340) and Maharashtra (321)," it said. At least 1,175 died in road accidents in Delhi till Oct 31: Police

A total of 1,175 people lost their lives in 2023 till October 31 this year in 1,141 accidents that were classified as "fatal," police said on Monday. Fatal accidents in the national capital reduced by more than four per cent this year till October 31 and the number of deaths decreased by more than three per cent as compared to the corresponding period in 2022, police said. According to the data shared by police, a total of 4,646 fatal accidents took place in 2022 till October 31. Out of them, 1,197 were fatal accidents, which took 1,225 lives. This year, there were 4,803 reported accidents, with 1,141 classified as fatal and 1,175 people losing their lives in them. "In 2023, there was a 4.74 per cent reduction in the total number of fatal accidents, accompanied by a 3.27 per cent decrease in the number of persons killed compared to previous year," police said. New technologies, including AI can help reduce road accidents: Experts

Use of Artificial Intelligence and installation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) can help reduce road accidents by optimizing traffic flow and managing congestion, road safety experts said on Thursday. Addressing an event organised by India chapter of International Road Federation (IRF), startup Netradyne's senior director Amit Kumar said e-vehicles on roads are more unsafe than conventional cars due to higher acceleration and additional weight of batteries. Netradyne is a startup that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) for driver safety. "Artificial Intelligence can help monitor driver behaviour, detect signs of fatigue, distraction, or impaired driving and provide warnings or take control of the vehicle to prevent accidents," Kumar said. According to Kumar, AI can also help in better collection and analysis of crash data, enhancing road infrastructure, increasing the efficiency of post-crash response. Four killed, two injured in SUV-truck collision in Mandla district of MP

Four persons were killed and two others injured after a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) they were travelling in collided with a truck in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh in the wee hours of Wednesday, police said. The incident occurred on the National Highway-30 near Barkheda village, some 40 kilometres from the district headquarters, around 1 am, an official said. "An SUV collided with a speeding truck, which was carrying iron rods and coming from the opposite direction," Bichhiya police station in-charge Dharmendra Singh Dhurve said. Six persons were travelling in the SUV, of whom four were killed on the spot while two others suffered injuries, he said. Three women and the driver of the SUV died in the incident, Dhurve said, adding that the injured are being treated at the district hospital in Mandla. Due to the impact of the collision, the truck also overturned. Its driver fled from the spot and efforts are on to trace him, he said.

Road accidents top cause for youth's, kids' death globally: Ficci-EY report

Road accidents claim around 1.5 million lives in India every year, contributing 11 per cent to the total number of such fatalities globally, according to a FICCI-EY report. Globally, at least one life is lost every 24 seconds due to road traffic injury, said the report released on Tuesday. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), road crash is the 8th leading cause of death with more than 1.3 billion deaths and 50 million serious injuries. It is the leading cause of death amongst youth and kids aged 5 to 29 years, it said. "1st rank in road fatalities is held by India (11 per cent share in the world). Around 99% of Indian pedestrians at risk of injury, reports Bosch

As many as 99 per cent of Indian pedestrians are at risk of injury with about one in every ten traffic-related fatalities in the country being a pedestrian, according to a report by Bosch Ltd. In 2021, India's pedestrian fatalities numbered 29,200, exceeding the combined road fatalities of the entire European Union and Japan with another 60,000 pedestrians injured, said the report based on accident database of over 6,300 cases of the Road Accident Sampling System for India (RASSI). "Every second pedestrian accident in rural roads contributes to pedestrian fatality. The Supreme Court has directed the states to constitute a special unit in police stations within three months to investigate and facilitate motor accident claim cases. Issuing a slew of directions, the top court said on receiving intimation about a road accident by a motor vehicle at a public place, the SHO concerned shall take steps as per Section 159 of the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act under which an Accident Information Report is to be filed to the Claims Tribunal within three months by the police. "In our view, the head of the Home Department of the State and the Director General of Police in all States/Union Territories shall ensure the compliance of the Rules by constituting a special unit in the police stations or at least at town level to investigate and facilitate the motor accident claim cases. 20 crash-prone zones identified as hit-and-run zones in 2021: Delhi Police

The Delhi Police identified 20 crash-prone zones as hit-and-run zones in the city in 2021, according to an official report. The criteria to identify such zones was based on three or more fatal crashes (hit-and-run cases) registered within the range of 500-metre diameter, the report released by the city police said. Shastri Park/IT Park, Punjabi Bagh Chowk, Mukarba Chowk, Seemapuri roundabout and Bhalswa Chowk reported four fatal crashes (hit and run) each. Similarly, Haider Pur Metro Station, Libaspur bus stand, Prem Bari pull, Rajdhani Park, Rama Road crossing, GTK Depot, Okhla More reported three fatal crashes (hit and run) each, the report stated.
