World looking at more sharpened contestation between US, China: Jaishankar

India would be willing to work with like-minded partners on specific agenda and its role in the Quad is an example of such an approach, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday, while calling for reformed multilateralism. In a virtual address at the FPCI Global Town hall, Jaishankar, delving into major geopolitical developments, said the world is looking at a more "sharpened contestation" between the US and China on a range of areas. He underlined that even as the world looks "complicated", India's desire and determination to ensure its stability and contribute to its prosperity is only getting stronger. The Quad, comprising India, the US, Australia and Japan, has emerged as a key coalition focusing on working towards ensuring a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific against the backdrop of China's growing muscle-flexing in the region. In the context of key directions and developments in international relations over the last few decades, the external affairs ministe

Conflict in West Asia resulting in disruptions in trade flow: Jaishankar

The disruptions in crucial shipping routes and trade flows triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia strengthened the case for de-risking, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. In an address at an India-Mediterranean business conclave, Jaishankar, referring to the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), said it aims to become a "cornerstone of global connectivity". "The ongoing conflict in West Asia understandability has generated concerns about some of the contemporary initiatives," he said. "Disruptions in crucial shipping routes that have increased shipping costs and necessitated the rerouting of trade flows, have added to our collective worries," Jaishankar said at the conference hosted by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). "But if you reflect on these happenings, they only strengthen the case for derisking. As the three hubs of India, Europe and the Middle East step up their interactions, connectivity will be more needed, not ..

Time ripe for India-Singapore relations to raise to next level: Jaishankar

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's arrival on an official visit to Singapore, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday said the time is ripe for the two countries to take their bilateral relationship to the next level. "Given the transformation underway in India and the changes in the world, they need to become more contemporary. In many ways, that is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has chosen to visit Singapore so early in his third term, The Straits Times quoted Jaishankar as saying in an interview. He said that India and Singapore's bilateral ties have been extremely strong in the last two decades. Just like Singapore had an opportunity in 1992 and then again in 2006, it should seize the moment and fully utilise the new landscape, the minister said. Sometimes, to be honest, I feel that impressions at your end are somewhat dated, Jaishankar pointed out. In India, we are using the achievements of the last decade as the springboard to accelerate national growth and

Given state of ties, Chinese investments need to be scrutinised: Jaishankar

Asserting that India has a "special China problem" which is over and above the world's "general China problem", External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Saturday the border and the state of relations with the country call for investments from there be scrutinised. Jaishankar said that if people are complaining of trade deficit with China and "we are too", it is because decades ago, "we consciously overlooked the nature of Chinese production and the advantages which they enjoyed in a system where they got a level playing field with all the advantages they brought to bed". "China in many ways is a unique problem because it is a unique polity, it is a unique economy. Unless one tries to grasp that uniqueness and understand it, the judgements, the conclusions and the policy prescriptions flowing out of it can be problematic," he said at the ET World Leaders Forum here during a session titled 'New India's Risks, Reforms and Responsibilities'. We have to look at mutuality of interests: EAM on India-Bangladesh ties

Since its independence in 1971, India's relationship with Bangladesh has "gone up and down" and it is natural that New Delhi deals with the government of the day, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. In his address at a book launch here, he also emphasised that India will have to look at "mutuality of interests" and said for any country in the world, neighbours are "always a conundrum", and so are "major powers". His comments come in the backdrop of the unprecedented anti-government protests in Bangladesh which eventually led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government and her fleeing to India on August 5. Hasina's presence in India for over three weeks has given rise to speculation in that country. Since August 8, an interim government, led by Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus along with a team of advisers, is in place in Bangladesh. The book 'Stategic Conundrum: Reshaping India's Foreign Policy', written by Rajiv Sikri, former ambassador of India, talks about th
