Apple has unveiled a sweeping plan to tear down some of the competitive barriers that it has built around its lucrative iPhone franchise. The announcement on Thursday comes as it moves to comply with upcoming European regulations aimed at giving consumers the choice to use alternative app stores. The overhaul, scheduled to take effect in early March, will include concessions that Apple had previously refused to make in its app store, including lowering the fees that it collects from developers in Europe. Most notably, Apple for the first time will allow iPhone users in Europe to switch to use app stores other than the company-operated one that comes installed on the mobile device. It will also enable enable developers to offer alternative payment systems that could help them make more money while potentially lowering their prices. Global memory and data storage major Micron Technology on Thursday said the first phase of its plant in Gujarat's Sanand will become operational in early 2025. It has already started construction of the plant by roping Tata Projects, and the hiring process has also begun, the US-based company's president and chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra said at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit here. "The first phase, which will include 5,00,000 square feet of plant clean room space, will become operational in early 2025," he said. The investment was first announced during the US visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2023 and construction had begun in September. Micron has committed to invest over USD 800 million in the plant of the over USD 2.75 billion cost. "The authority recommends imposition of anti-dumping duty on the imports of the subject goods originating in or exported from China and Hong Kong for a period of five years...," the DGTR's notification has said.
