Communists may enter 21st century, but only in 22nd: Tharoor mocks LDF

In a stinging jibe at Kerala's LDF government, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said the Communist parties will one day finally enter the 21st century, but it may only be in the 22nd. His remarks came after the Kerala Assembly on Tuesday passed the Kerala State Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 2025, which marks a break from the CPI(M)-led government's long-standing opposition to the privatisation of education. Tharoor said, "So Kerala's LDF government has finally done the right thing, by permitting private universities to open in the state. As usual, the decision comes about 15 to 20 years late, which is usually the case with those anchored in a 19th century ideology." Never forget that when computers first came to India, Communist goons entered public sector offices to smash them, the MP from Thiruvananthapuram said in his post on X. The only parties to object to the introduction of mobile telephones in India were also the communist ones, Tharoo

'Egg on my face': Tharoor on opposing India's stance on Russia-Ukraine war

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor Tuesday conceded that he was left with "an egg on his face" in opposing India's stance when the Russia-Ukraine war broke out and said due to the policy that was adopted, the country is now in a position where it can make a difference to lasting peace. Tharoor had criticised India's stance when the Russia attacked Ukraine and called for condemnation of the aggression. During an interactive session at the Raisina Dialogue here, the former minister of state for external affairs said, "I am still wiping the egg of my face because I am one person in the parliamentary debate who actually criticised the Indian position at the time back in February 2022." The Thiruvananthapuram MP said his criticism was based on the "well-known grounds that there was a violation of the UN charter, there had been a violation of the principle of inviolability of borders, of the sovereignty of a member state namely Ukraine, and we had always stood for the inadmissibility of the u

Current MEA budget not reflective of India's growing stature: Parl panel

A parliamentary panel has said the current budget allocation to the MEA "does not adequately support" India's foreign policy priorities and international stature, and called for a substantial increase in it to ensure India can meet its diplomatic and development objectives effectively and assert its growing influence on the world stage. The allocation in the budget estimates (BE) 2025-26, at Rs 20,516.61 crores, represents a 7.39 per cent reduction from BE 2024-25 and an 18.83 per cent decrease compared to the revised estimates (RE) for 2024-25, it said. The 'Fifth Report of the Committee on External Affairs (2024-25) on Demands for Grants (2025-26)' of the panel, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, was presented in Parliament on Monday. "Upon a detailed examination of the budgetary allocation of the Ministry of External Affairs for the fiscal year 2025-26, the Committee observe with dismay that despite India's growing global profile and expanding diplomatic and development ...

Need to convey message delicately: Tharoor on US' treatment of deportees

The way a batch of Indians were deported from the US has naturally caused a great deal of anxiety, resentment and anger in India and New Delhi will have to "delicately" convey a message to Washington behind closed doors on this, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Monday. The MP from Thiruvananthapuram made the remarks in response to a question during an interaction at an event here on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-nation tour with the US being in the second leg of his visit. The interaction was hosted at the Foreign Correspondents' Club (FCC) on the occasion of the launch of the book 'Indian Parliament: Shaping Foreign Policy' by veteran journalist and scholar K V Prasad. PM Modi, during the two-day working visit to the United States from February 12, will hold a bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump and interact with business leaders and members of the Indian community. Tharoor slams BJP, says 'attack-dog' behaviour embarrassment to India

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday slammed the BJP after the US rejected the ruling party's allegations that elements in the American "deep state" were behind attempts to destabilise India and said this "attack-dog" behaviour is an embarrassment to India. The US on Saturday rejected the BJP's allegations that organisations funded by the US State Department and elements in the American "deep state" were behind attempts to destabilise India through targeted attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and business tycoon Gautam Adani. A spokesperson at the US embassy described the allegations as "disappointing" and asserted that the US government has been a champion of media freedom around the world. The BJP alleged on Thursday that the US deep state colluded with the media portal OCCRP (Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project) and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to "damage" India's image. In a post in X, Tharoor said, "It's clear the BJP neither understands democracy n
