Grit not enough: Shirse runs with injury, ends last in men's 110m hurdles

National record-holder Tejas Shirse's historic appearance in the Commonwealth Games' men's 110m hurdles final ended in pain and heartbreak but demonstrated his grit as he ran the race with a stress fracture in his left foot to finish eighth and last in the event. The 24-year-old clocked 13.76 seconds in the Heats and became the first Indian to enter the final of the competition. But his hopes of improving on that performance suffered a massive blow a few hours later when he sustained a navicular stress fracture in his left foot during the warm-up for the final. Instead of pulling out, Shirse ran with a heavily taped foot. He finished last in the eight-man field in 15.39 seconds, grimacing in pain before hobbling off the track. "In the warm-up, I suffered a navicular stress fracture in my left foot. I didn't want to pull out, so I told my physio to tape it," Shirse told PTI. "I am the first Indian to qualify for the 110m hurdles final at the Commonwealth Games, so I didn't want to l

Meet Sarvesh Kushare, India's first CWG high jump silver medallist

National record holder Sarvesh Kushare scripted history as he became the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men's high jump event of the Commonwealth Games, losing the gold by the narrowest of margins in an enthralling showdown with Jamaica's Romaine Beckford. After sailing over 2.25m, both the 31-year-old Kushare and Beckford failed to clear the 2.28m mark. But the Jamaican took the gold as he had one less failed attempt than the Indian on count-back. The bronze went to Jack Kimani (2.20m) of England. The other Indian in the fray, Adarsh Ram, finished fifth with 2.15m. Before Monday, Tejaswin Shankar was the lone Indian to have won a high jump medal -- a bronze in the 2022 Birmingham Games. But Kushare bettered it with his silver. It was Kushare's first medal in the CWG and that too on debut. Tejaswin also competed on Monday and retired after failing to clear 2.05m in his first attempt. The move was a precautionary measure for Tejaswin as he is competing in the men's decath

Who is Sharmila Dhankar, India's first CWG para-athletics gold medallist?

Sharmila Dhankar, a woman who was impaired by polio at the age of two and survived the trauma of an abusive marriage, became India's first para-athlete to clinch a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, winning the women's shot put F57 event here. The 40-year-old produced her season's best throw of 9.81m to end India's 20-year wait for a para-athletics medal in the CWG. Compatriot Shilpa Shyla, was awarded the bronze medal following an Indian protest amid controversial circumstances. Shyla had produced a personal best effort of 7.26m. Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi was initially placed at the bronze medal position but after a protest and official review, her only valid mark was adjudged a foul. That led to Shyla being upgraded to bronze from the initial fourth place. However, it is likely that a counter protest may also be launched by Nigeria. A sobbing Shyla celebrated, along with Sharmila, after the dramatic upgradation to bronze, giving India two medals from the event. F57 classific

Preeti reaches quarterfinals; Jadumani downs Pakistan opponent at CWG 2026

Asian Games bronze medallist boxer Preeti Pawar hardly broke a sweat as she stormed into the women's 54kg quarterfinals while Jadumani Singh also made the last-eight stage with a commanding win over his Pakistani opponent in the men's 55kg in the Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. The 22-year-old Preeti from Bhiwani won her pre-quarterfinals contest against Deborah Mtenje of Malawi via Referee Stop Contest (RSC) decision in the second round of the bout. Preeti, who won a bronze in the 2022 Asian Games as well as a gold in the New Delhi World Cup last year, toyed with her opponent. The Malawi boxer faced two standing counts, one in each round, and it was enough for the referee to stop the bout with 47 seconds left in the second round. Preeti got the unanimous nod of all the five judges in the first round. The win puts Preeti one victory away from securing her maiden Commonwealth Games medal. Jadumani is also one victory away from securing a medal after he beat Sumama Rehman of Paki

Tokas draws inspiration from Bekauri in quest for India's CWG judo gold

Drawn to combat sports since childhood and inspired by two-time Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri of Georgia, Indian judoka Harsh Tokas is dreaming of creating history by winning India's first ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo on his debut in Glasgow. The 23-year-old, who will compete in the men's 81kg category, discovered judo at the age of 10 after joining a free academy in Delhi's Munirka village. More than a decade later, the Commonwealth Games represent the biggest stage of his career, and Tokas is determined to settle for nothing less than the top step of the podium. "I started judo about 12 years ago when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I am from Munirka village in Delhi. There is an academy in our village run by our coach, he opened it for children free of cost so that anyone could come and train. That is where my journey began," he told PTI during an interaction. "I liked combat sports from a young age. There was a judo academy near my home and the environment ...

Anahat Singh ends India's 21-year wait to reach World Junior squash final

Anahat Singh has become the first Indian to reach the World Junior Squash Championship final since veteran Joshna Chinappa achieved the feat in 2005. On Friday, the top seeded Delhi girl beat Egyptian 3/4 seed Barb Sameh 11-3 8-11 11-4 11-6 in the semifinals. World No 20 Anahat, a bronze medal-winning semifinalist last year, is firm favourite, and is just one step away from becoming India's first World Junior squash champion. "I'm really happy. I played Barb a few months ago at the British Junior Open and it was a close match like this, so I knew I'd have to play really well," Anahat said. "I didn't play my best yesterday and I knew I had to come out today and show what I'm capable of producing on the court. "I've played in four World Juniors and lost in the quarters and semis, so reaching the final has made my parents and coaches really happy, but the tournament is not done yet." Anahat will meet Egyptian second seed Ruqayya Salem in the final.
