Difficult to contain lower-order with SG Test balls: Umesh

Speedster Umesh Yadav on Friday joined the growing list of Indian players who feel 'SG Test' ball was not ideal, saying the bowlers are unable to run through lower-order when it gets old. India skipper Virat Kohli has already advocated the use of hand-made Dukes from England. "If you are saying that lower order has scored runs, then you must realise that in India, with SG Test balls on these kind of flat tracks, you neither get pace nor bounce. So the option to use variations ends," Umesh said at the post-match conference. "So (with SG) all you can do is to bowl one spot but then you will realise that nothing is happening even off the pitch nor is it swinging. So when middle and lower order comes in they know that ball has become soft and it doesn't come at a pace and batting becomes easier, said Umesh, who had figures of 3 for 83 from 23 overs. "Tail-enders know that it will neither swing nor reverse. You just have to wait for something to happen and keep trying. But you can't really

Constantine confident of India's good showing against China

India might be touted as underdogs in the much-anticipated football friendly against China here on Saturday, but national coach Stephen Constantine is confident of giving a good fight to their higher-ranked opponents. India and China will go head to head in a football friendly for the first time in 21 years on Saturday with the home team a firm favourite despite poor recent form. The Indian team is playing an international match for the first time in China though their senior sides have faced each other 17 times in the past. China have played in India seven times, all of them in the invitational tournament Nehru Cup. "The conditions are ideal and it's going to be a crucial game for us before the Asian Cup. Coach picks Jhingan as India's captain for match against China

Sandesh Jhingan will lead the Indian football team against China on Saturday as coach Stephen Constantine termed the burly defender as one of the leaders of the team, going forward. Charismatic striker Sunil Chhetri is regular skipper of the side but it is not unusual to rotate the captaincy in international friendlies. It will be first meeting between the two teams since the Nehru Cup clash in Kochi in 1997. India are yet to win a single match against China in the 17 encounters played between the two countries so far. "I think the captain has to reflect the attitude of the coach. Sandesh first played for me four years ago. He is a fighter and a leader. He gives everything on the pitch which most of the players do," Constantine said at the pre-match press conference. "I think he is going to be one of the leaders for India going forward. Keeping the magnitude of the game in mind, I believe he deserves to lead the team. The newly-appointed skipper thanked the coach for believing in him .

Final spot secured, India suffer first defeat in Sultan of Johor Cup

Already through to the final, the Indian junior men's hockey team Friday suffered its first defeat at the eighth Sultan of Johor Cup, losing 2-3 against Great Britain in its last round robin match here. With four consecutive wins earlier in the tournament, India had already entered the summit clash ahead of Friday's clash with 12 points. Great Britain are placed second in the points table with 10 points from five games out of which they won three. The Indian juniors led by Mandeep Mor made a strong start making potential forays into the rival's striking circle. The tactic fetched the Indians back-to-back penalty corners in the fifth minute and Vishnukant Singh converted the second attempt with a good variation. India's lead was shortlived as last year's runner-up side Great Britain equalised in the next minute, courtesy a brilliant field goal from Cameron Golden. In the second quarter too, India continued to dominate stretching Great Britain's defence. While one penalty corner went ...

The BCCI has formally announced that the match will now be held at the Brabourne Stadium on October 29. "Under the instructions of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India appointed Committee of Administrators, the fourth One-day International match between India and Windies scheduled on 29th October at Wankhede Stadium has been shifted to Cricket Club of India, Mumbai," the BCCI said in a statement. The need for a shift in venue arose due to original host , the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) citing it's inability to issue tenders to the vendors for the ODI. The city's cricket body had already cited its inability in hosting the ODI at the Wankhede Stadium, primary because of financial constraints.
