Chase-ing Shadows: Roston Chase defies India as West Indies score 295/7

Indian spinners went off the boil in the final session as all-rounder Roston Chase hit a gutsy unbeaten 98 to take the West Indies to a respectable 295 for seven on the opening day of the second Test, here on Friday. Chase, who scored 137 to deny India a victory in a Test match in Jamaica back in 2016, showed the much-needed application with requisite technique as Indian bowlers struggled after polishing off the top half for only 113 runs. Chase, along with skipper Jason Holder (52), did enough to ensure that the West Indies will have a good first innings total to fight against a heavyweight Indian batting line-up. Not being able to dismiss the middle and lower-order was a problem in England and it once again turned out to be the bowling unit's bane as the Chase-Holder duo added 104 runs for the seventh wicket. In England, it was the pacers, here it was the spinners and only one wicket fell for 102 runs in last session. Nonetheless, Umesh Yadav (3/83 in 23 overs) bowled his heart out .

India ranked 5th as ICC launches global women's T20I team rankings

India are placed fifth while three-time champions Australia lead the 46-team table as the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday launched global Women's T20I Team Rankings. The ICC's move to launch the women's T20I rankings follows its decision earlier this year to award international status to all T20 matches between member countries. Whilst Scotland are the top ranked associate member in 11th and Thailand take 12th place in the first table, following some good performances of late including a win over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup earlier this year. All women's T20 matches between members have international status since the Asia Cup in June and the new rankings system will help teams gauge where they stand in the shortest format of the game, said an ICC release. The teams will have to play six T20I matches in the previous three to four years to remain on the rankings table. The system moves away from the combined rankings in place earlier and there is now a separate ICC Women's ..

Zverev blames 'superstition' for 'ridiculous' use of towels

Alexander Zverev weighed in on the debate about players' use of towels Friday, saying those who wipe down after every point are "ridiculous" and do it for superstition, not sweat. There has been much discussion at the Shanghai Masters this week about the issue after Fernando Verdasco berated a ball boy at the Shenzhen Open for failing to bring his towel fast enough. Roger Federer told reporters in Shanghai earlier this week that ball boys and girls -- who are unpaid volunteers -- should be given as much respect as anyone else. There have been calls for towel rails to be placed at the back of courts so ball kids do not have to bring the sweaty towels to players every few minutes, when they wipe their faces and hands between points. That system will be tried out at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan next month. "There are some players -- some American players, some other players -- that go for the towel literally after every single point," said the 21-year-old German prodigy ...

Ruthless Djokovic sets up Zverev clash in Shanghai semis

Novak Djokovic will face Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters after the 14-time Grand Slam champion beat Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7/1), 6-3 on Friday. Djokovic saved set point in the opener before taking control of the tie break and the second set to dump out the South African seventh seed in efficient fashion. The 31-year-old from Serbia is in sparkling form, winning Wimbledon, the Cincinnati Masters and US Open in recent months, after having elbow surgery in February. The second seed is homing in on injured Rafael Nadal's year-end number one ranking. Djokovic will meet Zverev on Saturday after the rising star defeated Kyle Edmund to reach his first Shanghai Masters semi-final. The fourth seed's 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 11th-seeded Briton also seals his place in the season-ending ATP Finals in London next month, which bring together the top eight men. Mbappe is Time magazine's 'Future of Soccer'

Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe's rapid rise to global fame has earned the teenaged World Cup winner an appearance on the cover of Time magazine's international edition, to appear on Friday. Time said Mbappe was a global superstar who "is the future of soccer." Mbappe made headlines in September 2017 when he moved from Ligue 1 side Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain for a staggering 180 million euros ($207 million), a deal that saw the then 18-year-old player handed a reported monthly salary of 1.5m euros ($1.8m). But the 19-year-old's stock skyrocketed during this year's World Cup, where a series of phenomenal displays drew compliments from Brazil legend Pele on his way to helping France end their 20-year wait to win another World Cup trophy. Mbappe became the youngest French goalscorer in World Cup history when he struck in a 1-0 win over Peru in the group stages. The teenager from the gritty Parisian suburb of Bondy then tore apart Argentina, scoring twice and earning a ...

Kuldeep takes three wickets as West Indies reach 197/6 at tea

A depleted Indian bowling attack proved to be strong enough to reduce West Indies to a precarious 197 for six at tea on the first day of the second and final Test here on Friday. The match did not start on a bright note for India as debutant pacer Shardul Thakur left the field complaining of groin strain having merely bowled 10 deliveries but the four-man bowling attack proved strong enough as West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav (3/50 in 18 overs) once again proved to be West Indies' nemesis as the visiting batsmen failed to read him on most occasions while Umesh Yadav (2/60 in 16 overs) was impressive with the old ball. Save Roston Chase (50 batting), who again showed a lot of heart with his second half-century of the series, the other batsmen neither had technique nor temperament to stick around in what were easy batting conditions. In the post lunch session, Shimron Hetmeyer (12) offered no stroke to a googly and was adjudged plumb ...

Ahead of his quarter-final clash against Japan's Kei Nishikori in the ongoing Shanghai Masters, twenty-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has stated that the former is a "tough" opponent to play against. The 37-year-old further hoped that his close wins against Spain's Bautista Agut and Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the previous clashes of the tournament would be helpful while facing the world number twelve on Friday."As we know with Kei's game, once he finds his range and his rhythm, he's very tough to play. I think it's going to be a tough match," ATP quoted Federer, as saying."I hope it's going to help me that I played against [Daniil] Medvedev and also Bautista Agut, two really good baseliners, to be honest. I need to focus a lot on my serve to make sure I can always keep the upper hand there," he added. While Federer had advanced into the quarter-final of the Shanghai Masters .
