Kyrgios beats hasty Shanghai retreat for third year running

Australian firebrand Nick Kyrgios exited the Shanghai Masters in ignominy for the third year running on Monday, appearing to lose heart during his first-round defeat. The 23-year-old was on the end of a surprise loss to the American qualifier Bradley Klahn, the world number 104 winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The talented but temperamental Kyrgios, who is ranked 38th in the world, has a chequered history with Shanghai. Last year he was fined after he stormed off mid-way through his first-round match, with jeers and boos ringing in his ears from the crowd. Two years ago he argued with spectators and was accused of giving away points in another defeat. The fiery Australian was fined and suspended on that occasion. Another high-profile name to go out at the first hurdle was three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka. The 33-year-old Swiss star, who has had injury problems, was defeated by 13th seed Borna Coric. The Croatian, 21, won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and will play Klahn in the next round.

Jurgen urged to bolster Liverpool's midfield

Close on the heels of a dull stalemate against champions Manchester City, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has beenurged to rope in a strong midfielder to bolster the Reds' ranks. The previous four clashes of Klopp's men against City in the Premier League at Anfield have been bagged by Liverpool. But Klopp's men were unable to maintain the momentum as they took just two shots at the woodworks during their 90-minute goalless draw.Former defender Jamie Carragher believes the dismal performance highlights lack of options in the middle."If Liverpool are in a really good position in January, I think they've got to be looking to address that (midfield area)," goal.com quoted him as saying."It's not even necessarily having someone who comes in and plays every single game. They just haven't even got anyone like that in the squad. Adam Lallana is too injury prone. Even if Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain comes back, [Naby] Keita goes in or Fabinho goes in they are all the same," he stated. After acquiring ..

Australia's openers survived a torrid 13 over spell to finish on 30 without loss after Haris Sohail's maiden century guided Pakistan to 482 on the second day of the first Test in Dubai on Monday. Usman Khawaja was unbeaten on 17 and debutant Aaron Finch was 13 not out as Australia negotiated some tight spin bowling from Pakistan on a pitch which has started to show signs of turn.
