Bengaluru make fine start to ISL-V with 1-0 win over Chennaiyin

Bengaluru FC made a perfect start to their campaign at the fifth Indian Super League, defeating defending champions Chennaiyin FC 1-0 at the Sree Kanteerava stadium here on Sunday. In what was a repeat of last season's final at the same venue, Miku's 41st minute strike was enough for the Blues to overcome the visitors' challenge. Chennaiyin FC got nothing out of this game, despite being gifted two gild-edge chances to take the lead. Bengaluru, though, were quick to get off the blocks with Eric Paartalu getting an excellent chance as early as the third minute. After some scrappy play in the Chennaiyin box following a throw-in by Rahul Bheke, the loose ball fell to the Australian midfielder's feet but his snap shot was aimed straight at goalkeeper Karanjit Singh. The visitors started to gain a foothold in the match through their quick breaks as the minutes wore on and they should have drawn first blood midway into the game. Gregory Nelson and Jeje Lalpekhlua broke at pace following an ..

Molinari makes European Ryder Cup history with perfect five wins

Francesco Molinari finished off a memorable weekend by becoming the first European player to win all five of his matches at a Ryder Cup on Sunday. The British Open champion eased to a 4 and 2 victory over an out-of-sorts Phil Mickelson to secure the hosts the trophy at Le Golf National with a dominant performance. After Ian Poulter's dramatic 2-up win against world number one Dustin Johnson, Molinari ensured a crushing triumph for Europe. The Italian and Tommy Fleetwood had become the first European pairing to win four matches from four on Saturday. English rookie Fleetwood was beaten by Tony Finau in Sunday's singles, but Molinari took his chance to make history against the erratic Mickelson. "I just try to do things, be professional and obviously I had an amazing partner in Tommy," he said. "Never felt like I had a rookie playing alongside me. It's been amazing." Molinari is the first player from either side to claim five points at a Ryder Cup since the USA's Larry Nelson in ...

Europe hold off tense US fightback for emotional Ryder Cup triumph

Europe's finest golfers recaptured the Ryder Cup on Sunday, holding off a dramatic United States fightback to complete an emotional upset victory with Italy's Francesco Molinari clinching the outcome. Reigning British Open champion Molinari defeated five-time major winner Phil Mickelson 4 and 2 to give Europe an insurmountable 14 1/2-9 1/2 lead over the favoured Americans in the biennial team showdown at Le Golf National. "It was amazing," Molinari said. "It's an incredible achievement. We did just an amazing job." In the process, Molinari -- who had been winless in six prior Ryder Cup matches -- became the first European and only the fourth player ever to go 5-for-5 in a Ryder Cup and did so just two months after hoisting the Claret Jug. "It feels great but it's not about me," he said. "It was about time to have them but it's about the group not the individual. "I couldn't even dream of a summer like this." Europe had seized a 10-6 edge in Saturday's foursomes and fourballs matches ..

Lobera aims for first win over NorthEast

Having failed to make much of an impression in previous four attempts, NorthEast United FC will enter the Indian Super League with renewed hopes as they take on FC Goa here Monday. It will not be easy for NorthEast United. FC Goa have a measure of continuity about them as head coach Sergio Lobera takes charge of the team for a second successive season, while the hosts will be playing under Eelco Schattorie who has been handed the reins. The Dutch coach had come in as an assistant coach last season after the departure of Joao de Deus. They now sport a completely different look with former PSG striker Bartholomew Ogbeche being their most notable signing. The Nigerian international is expected to be their main threat upfront and will look to improve their efficiency in front of goal. Croatian duo of Mato Grgic and Mislav Komorski will marshal the defence with Rowllin Borges playing the anchor role in midfield.
