Sarvesh Anil Kushare and Anjali Devi were the stars on the second day of the 58th National Open athletics championships, setting meet records en route gold medal in the men's high jump and the women's 400m on Wednesday. Kushare, representing Services, leaped to a new personal best of 2.24m to erase the old meet record of 2.23m set by VS Yadav, set last year in Chennai. Argentina and Great Britain picked as 2019 Davis Cup wild cards

Argentina and Britain have been awarded wild cards into the 2019 Davis Cup, the first to be played under a radically changed format, organisers announced Wednesday. Under a format proposed by the Kosmos group, and adopted by the International Tennis Federation in August, the competition will bring together 18 nations in one place for a week at the end of the tennis season. The four 2018 semi-finalists -- France, Croatia, Spain and the United States -- qualify directly. Twelve more places will be decided in qualifiers on Feb 1-2 next year. That left two spots for wildcards selected by the organisers and they have chosen Argentina and Britain. The choice was made by a committee of ITF president David Haggerty, one of his vice presidents Rene Stammbach, former Spanish tennis player Galo Blanco and Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique, who is president of Kosmos. The ITF said in a press release that "both nations have a rich Davis Cup history and have enjoyed recent success in the ...

Russian athletics takes case to court over IAAF reinstatement

Russian athletics, emboldened by WADA's lifting of the three-year ban on Russia's anti-doping agency (RUSADA), has demanded to have its ban from track and field terminated. In a statement on Wednesday, the Russian Athletics Federation (RUSAF) said it had filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) the previous day. The statement said the appeal pointed to the "unfounded decision" to put several criteria on the RUSAF restoration roadmap including the recognition by the Russian authorities of their involvement in the scheme for concealing the use of doping by Russian athletes. "The unreasonable implementation of these criteria and their presence on the roadmap for RUSAF's restoration is in our view wrong, because it goes beyond RUSAF's competencies," the statement said. Russian athletics chief Dmitry Shlyakhtin also sent the letter to Sebastian Coe, president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), informing him he is taking the case to the CAS, .

Mushfiqur Rahim scored his career's 30th half-century, while Mohammad Mithun made 60 to lift Bangladesh to a decent 239 all out against Pakistan in the final Super Four match of the Asia Cup here Wednesday. Mushfiqur (99) fell one short of what could have been his seventh ODI century but by then he had rescued Bangladesh with a 144-run fourth wicket stand with Mithun after they were reduced to 12 for three inside five overs. For Pakistan, comeback man Junaid Khan shone with the ball, registering impressive figures of four for 19 from his nine overs. Opting to bat first in the virtual semifinal, Bangladesh were off to a horrendous start as they lost their first three wickets with the scoreboard reading just 12 in 4.2 overs. Left-arm pacer Junaid did the early damage, removing openers Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar in his consecutive overs. One-down Mominul Haque failed once again as he was cleaned up by young left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi (2/47) in the fourth over. But ...

Sri Lanka drop 'scapegoat' skipper for England

Sri Lanka's sacked skipper Angelo Mathews was dropped Wednesday from the ODI and T20 squads against England after he accused the board of making him a scapegoat for the team's Asia Cup debacle. The 31-year-old all-rounder was not included in the 15-man squad for the five one-day internationals and the one-off T20 against England beginning on October 10. Cricket officials said fitness concerns forced them to drop Mathews. However, he was retained in the Test squad, officials said. "I have been made the scapegoat in this entire saga of Sri Lanka's dismal performance against Bangladesh and Afghanistan in the Asia Cup," Mathews said in a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket after he was sacked earlier this week as ODI and T20 captain. The board said it asked Mathews to step down and allow Dinesh Chandimal to lead Sri Lanka against England in all three formats of the game. The sacking followed Sri Lanka's drubbing in the Asia Cup, with losses to lower-ranked Afghanistan and Bangladesh ensuring its
