Liverpool and Manchester City's shootout for the Premier League title intensified on Saturday with comfortable wins over Southampton and Cardiff, while Manchester United were held 1-1 by Wolves on the day Alex Ferguson returned to Old Trafford. DDCA Mess: Played for India U-19 a week back, pacer finds himself excluded from Delhi colts team

The selection controversies which has plagued Delhi's junior cricket system for years, reared its ugly head once again after a current India U-19 player was excluded from the state U-19 team scheduled to play Vinoo Mankad Trophy. The player in question is a right-arm medium pacer Aayush Singh, who recently was a part of India 'B' U-19 team that took part in a Quadrangular series in Lucknow. The tournament had two India U-19 teams -- A and B along with junior teams from Nepal and Afghanistan. According BCCI's GM (Cricket Operations) Saba Karim, the India U-19 'B' team comprised players who are currently aged between 16 and 17 and will be eligible for the 2020 ICC U-19 World Cup. However on Friday, when Delhi's junior selection committee picked the squad for Vinoo Mankad Trophy ((National U-19 One-Day tournament), Aayush's name was not in the 15-member team led by Mayank Rawat. Even more inexplicable was his omission from the 13 member standby list -- highest in recent years as it's ...

Pakistan to review position on global cricket leagues

New Pakistan cricket chief Ehsan Mani said on Saturday his board would review their stance on global leagues and seek assurances from the game's governing body. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) earlier this year restricted its players' participation to one league other than their own Pakistan Super League to reduce their workload. The mushrooming of the leagues has also endangered the future of the traditional five-day game with some players giving up red-ball cricket to enure maximum earnings through Twenty20 and T10 (ten overs a side game) leagues. Despite criticism, PCB released 10 of its highest-paid contracted players to participate in the T10 league, held in Sharjah last year, including the current captain Sarfraz Ahmed, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Amir. The league was a big hit and will be extended to eight teams from six and will be held from November 23 to December 2 this year. But Mani, speaking at the Asia Cup, said his board will seek assurances from the International Cricket ...

China's Wang demolishes Putintseva at Guangzhou Open

Wang Qiang blitzed fifth seed Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 6-2 on Saturday at the Guangzhou Open final Saturday, the second time in as many years a Chinese player has triumphed in the WTA tournament. Third seed Wang was in charge throughout the hour and 11 minutes of play, earning rapturous applause from the home crowd. It was the 26-year-old's second career title after beating compatriot Zheng Sansai at the Jiangxi Open in July. Wang will now become the highest-ranked Chinese women's player -- leapfrogging Zhang Shuai, who won the tournament last year. Putintseva had powered through the week up to her convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over American Bernarda Pera in the semi-final, but stumbled against Wang with nearly two dozen unforced errors, including four double faults. "I played four good matches, and today wasn't as good," Putintseva said. "It was different conditions and a different player. I'm just happy that I played a few matches, won some matches here."
